- Difficult access to the area and isolation
- Depopulation and migration of the younger generation
- Aging of the population (low birth & low mortality rate, and higher
general life expectancy)
- High unemployment rate among women and youngsters and exit
from the labor market of people from 45 years with low education
level due to the financial and economic crisis
- Low level of collaboration among the different actors (high
competition among the actors which lead them from ages to defend
the own relations)

Gubbio Interventions: Culture and Intangible
Heritage in the dailylife
The cooking was taken as a basis to share the
elderly personal stories and thus the community
traditions and history. This allowed the youngsters
to reflect on the Intangible Heritage

Gubbio Interventions:Cibo e Parole
The elderly taught the youngsters how to cook
sustainably (diminishing the leftovers & re-
using them) and the intergenerational group
together thought of recipes of “recupero”
The students were encouraged to "replicate" it in
their families by interviewing their grandparents,
cooking together and video-documenting it. The
students then watched all the videos in class,
sharing experiences and reflecting on the
importance of their grandparents’ knowledge. They
were then uploaded on Big Foot Project 2013
youtube channel

Gubbio Interventions: The Youngsters in exchange
At the end of each cooking session, the young participants taught
ICT competencies to the “cooks on duty”. The elderly took photos
of their younger learning partners” and learned to upload the
pictures on the computer and post them on Facebook

Gubbio Final Product: Digital Guidebook on the
Intangible Heritage
It is unique in Gubbio,
made by the “Big Foot
citizens”. It is the
expression of a
participative process,
of knowledge sharing
among the members,
and of discovering the
value of traditions for
the sustainable
development

 Big Foot offered a clear opportunity to transform the elderly in a
source of economic and social development, giving back a role in the
community (Truffle event and the “Bee Happy avventura Summer
2013” initiative)
 Big Foot increased the interest and consciousness of the Cultural
Heritage from the younger generations and made the community
aware on the importance to guarantee the transmission to the future
generations
 Created occasion for dialogue among generations and created
structured initiatives of sharing of activities, thus the Intergenerational
Learning is now seen in Gubbio as a system not as an informal
experience in a family environment

 Thanks to the Big Foot project, it was activated a network among
different associations at local level, that never collaborated together
before. This is a chance for building a strongstrong civil society governancegovernance
 Thanks to the Big Foot project, the Elderly association “open their
doors” to schools and to other association which surely increased the
social cohesion
 The Gubbio Municipality is already planning to replicate it organisaing
Intergenerational Interventions in the Council Flats for Elderly to
maintain them active

 Big Foot project increased the involvement of disadvantaged
citizens as the immigrant women and youngsters with mental illness
thus increasing the Community Social Cohesion
 Sustainability Issues were covered: Food waste, Local products and
organic markets, Locally and regionally grown food, reduce the
products with C02, respect for the environment, water consumption
 Sense of belonging to the Community increased after all
participated to the production of the Digital Guidebook of the
Intangible Heritage of Gubbio

Main Findings and feedbacks
Among all the interviewed beneficiaires the overall satisfaction was between good and
very good
At the question “what have you learned they answered”:
- “Learning that once food was not wasted as today”;
- “I learnt how good is to work in team. I learnt that talking to each other is better than
talking on facebook”;
-“The old traditions are disappearing and it is nice to recover them. How my
grandpartents lived and how important is to hear from them”.
-“I have a lot to learn from the youngsters, not only the ICTs, but the desire to live giving
the right importance to the things happening in life.”
Key Informant:
-the responsible of CCRR“In my experience, none of the past projects have had such
success. We will re-propose it after the end of Big Foot”
-- “Big Foot puts allowed the youngsters to look at the elders differently and to approach
their grandpartents and learn from them in an original way”

  • 3. www.bigfoot-project.eu - Difficult access to the area and isolation - Depopulation and migration of the younger generation - Aging of the population (low birth & low mortality rate, and higher general life expectancy) - High unemployment rate among women and youngsters and exit from the labor market of people from 45 years with low education level due to the financial and economic crisis - Low level of collaboration among the different actors (high competition among the actors which lead them from ages to defend the own relations) Gubbio Municipality features

  • 10. www.bigfoot-project.eu Gubbio Interventions: Culture and Intangible Heritage in the dailylife The cooking was taken as a basis to share the elderly personal stories and thus the community traditions and history. This allowed the youngsters to reflect on the Intangible Heritage Participants: Elderly University, Local Public Library and the Secondary Schools M. Giorgio The story behind each festivity and traditional recipe has become and audio book, read by the elderly adults and youngsters with mental illness
  • 11. www.bigfoot-project.eu Gubbio Interventions:Cibo e Parole The elderly taught the youngsters how to cook sustainably (diminishing the leftovers & re- using them) and the intergenerational group together thought of recipes of “recupero” The students were encouraged to "replicate" it in their families by interviewing their grandparents, cooking together and video-documenting it. The students then watched all the videos in class, sharing experiences and reflecting on the importance of their grandparents’ knowledge. They were then uploaded on Big Foot Project 2013 youtube channel
  • 12. www.bigfoot-project.eu Gubbio Interventions: The Youngsters in exchange At the end of each cooking session, the young participants taught ICT competencies to the “cooks on duty”. The elderly took photos of their younger learning partners” and learned to upload the pictures on the computer and post them on Facebook A course on information and Communication Technology was organized for the Students of the "University of the Elderly"
  • 13. www.bigfoot-project.eu Gubbio Final Product: Digital Guidebook on the Intangible Heritage It is unique in Gubbio, made by the “Big Foot citizens”. It is the expression of a participative process, of knowledge sharing among the members, and of discovering the value of traditions for the sustainable development
  • 14. www.bigfoot-project.eu  Big Foot offered a clear opportunity to transform the elderly in a source of economic and social development, giving back a role in the community (Truffle event and the “Bee Happy avventura Summer 2013” initiative)  Big Foot increased the interest and consciousness of the Cultural Heritage from the younger generations and made the community aware on the importance to guarantee the transmission to the future generations  Created occasion for dialogue among generations and created structured initiatives of sharing of activities, thus the Intergenerational Learning is now seen in Gubbio as a system not as an informal experience in a family environment Main Results
  • 15. www.bigfoot-project.eu  Thanks to the Big Foot project, it was activated a network among different associations at local level, that never collaborated together before. This is a chance for building a strongstrong civil society governancegovernance  Thanks to the Big Foot project, the Elderly association “open their doors” to schools and to other association which surely increased the social cohesion  The Gubbio Municipality is already planning to replicate it organisaing Intergenerational Interventions in the Council Flats for Elderly to maintain them active Main Results
  • 16. www.bigfoot-project.eu  Big Foot project increased the involvement of disadvantaged citizens as the immigrant women and youngsters with mental illness thus increasing the Community Social Cohesion  Sustainability Issues were covered: Food waste, Local products and organic markets, Locally and regionally grown food, reduce the products with C02, respect for the environment, water consumption  Sense of belonging to the Community increased after all participated to the production of the Digital Guidebook of the Intangible Heritage of Gubbio Main Results
  • 17. www.bigfoot-project.eu Participant Feedback Sheet For each Interventions session Cibo and Parole: 6 classes of average 23 students for three sessions; Intangible Heritage: 14 students for 4 sessions; Intergenerational Cooking Classes (CCRR and Centro S. Pietro): average 13 young students for 7 Sessions; Cooking session in Branca: 11 young for 2 sessions; Cooking session in Madonna del Prato: 10 young for 2 sessions; ICT Course: 7 beneficiaries (Young and Elderly) per 4 sessions User Self Administered Questionnaires (SAQ) Mid term and Final term. We found some reluctance from the Elderly to answer to those questions Intergenerational Cooking Classes (CCRR and Centro S. Pietro): average 13 young students Mid and Final ICT Course: 7 beneficiaries (Young and Elderly) per 4 sessions Cooking session in Branca: Mid and Final Cooking session in Madonna del Prato: Mid and Final Initial Validation Tools

  • 20. www.bigfoot-project.eu Main Findings and feedbacks Among all the interviewed beneficiaires the overall satisfaction was between good and very good At the question “what have you learned they answered”: - “Learning that once food was not wasted as today”; - “I learnt how good is to work in team. I learnt that talking to each other is better than talking on facebook”; -“The old traditions are disappearing and it is nice to recover them. How my grandpartents lived and how important is to hear from them”. -“I have a lot to learn from the youngsters, not only the ICTs, but the desire to live giving the right importance to the things happening in life.” Key Informant: -the responsible of CCRR“In my experience, none of the past projects have had such success. We will re-propose it after the end of Big Foot” -- “Big Foot puts allowed the youngsters to look at the elders differently and to approach their grandpartents and learn from them in an original way”
