Introduction
This presentation has been prepared to identify
sustainability requirements in the Middle East and in
particular Dubai. The presentation considers climate
change, global emission reduction targets and
various environmental assessments methods for the
built environment. The presentation focuses on
environment
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) which is the preferred assessment method.
Sustainable strategies and technologies to satisfy
LEED requirements are identified.

Climate Change


Climate Change
Climate change and global warming are
unequivocally the biggest and most fundamental
problems facing planet earth and mankind today.
Global warming and climate change are expected to
have a cataclysmic effect across the globe. The
worst effects of climate change can be avoided if
greenhouse gases incorporating carbon dioxide
(CO2) in the atmosphere are stabilised instead of
being allowed to increase.

5.2% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012

Signed up to the Kyoto Protocol and have ratified their commitment on the 26/01/05.
However, the UAE is a member of the G77 and subsequently does not have any
reduction
red ction targets as the UAE is considered a developing co ntr
de eloping country.

HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of
the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has a vision whereby construction projects should
consider becoming environmentally friendly with no specific international target.

Leadership in Energy

USGBC, EHS & Emirates GBC
The United States Green Building Council currently control the
LEED certification process for projects in Dubai.
EHS h have jjust announced regulations for a LEED assessment
t d l ti f t
on all projects in JAFZ
The Emirates Green Building Council is currently reviewing
LEED credits and have adjusted the credits to suit the Middle
East construction industry and climate conditions. Pilot version 1
has been released.


LEED
LEED is controlled by the US Green Building Council
(USGBC) it is an assessment method for benchmarking
buildings with respect to sustainability and environmental
design. Projects are registered with the USGBC online and
the LEED assessment process is undertaken in two
stages,
stages design and construction stage submittals. After
submittals
project registration credits/prerequisites are distributed to
each team member online & LEED APs facilitate this
process. Design team members are responsible for various
credit template/submittal completions.

Billions of gallons of fresh water are

withdrawn each day from rivers and
streams, reservoirs to support buildings
around the world. The reduction of potable

water is paramount and this section gives
credits for water efficient landscaping,
innovative waste water technologies and

water re-use where possible.


Energy and Atmosphere

It is reported buildings account for almost

50% of CO2 emission which is mainly
derived through energy usage in buildings.
It is vitally important to reduce energy
consumption from buildings to reduce CO2
emissions and help curtail climate change

assessment considers commissioning,
refrigerant management, optimizing energy

performance, renewable technologies
measurement and verification.


Materials d Resources

Building material choices are important in

sustainable design because of the
extensive network of extraction, processing
and transportation. Construction and
transportation
demolition waste constitutes about 40% of
solid waste. This section of the LEED
assessment considers recycling, material

re-use, waste management, regionally
extracted, processes and manufactured

materials.


Indoor Environmentall Quality

People on average spend 90% of their time

indoors. The internal environmental quality
is paramount for a successful project. This
section of a LEED assessment considers
increased ventilation rates, ETS, adhesives
and sealants, thermal comfort,

This section of the LEED assessment has been
included to encourage design teams to go beyond
