Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
• The theme of my project was an educational spin on the underground music/fashion industry, what initially
attracted me to this theme was my pre existing interest and passion for the topic, I have been involved
within the industry for a while now already and have developed deep enjoyment for anything related to it,
the initial attraction to this theme however was much different to what came as a result of my research.
During conducting my existing product research, I was exposed to a lot of products that portrayed the
industry in a very artistic and interesting way that interested me a lot. This this new attraction to the theme
altered the course of my project and played a big role in shaping the final product.
What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
• Research was a very important part of my project that positively impacted the rest of the work I would
produce for the factual. I researched and analyzed similar existing products that adopted the same subject
matter or themes as what I had planned to use in my project, the 3 products I included in my research pro
forma was the Lil peep 'everybody's everything' documentary, the Rick Owens 'prophet of the apocalypse'
documentary and the YouTube documentary 'the enduring mystery of Jack the ripper'. All 3 of these
products proved very useful and offered me great insight into the documentary style of relaying information
and offering entertainment. I chose to implement a lot of features used in my researched products, for
example, the voice over aspect used in the jack the ripper documentary, the editing style and visual
aesthetic choice used in the Rick Owens documentary and much more. I think my final project has more of a
consistent high quality aspect to it.
How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• There was a stage in production where I couldn’t get any footage of my camera on to my pc to edit, I wasn’t
aware of the issue, tried multiple YouTube fix videos/tutorials but nothing worked, I didn’t know what else to
do and wasn’t hopeful that I would actually be able to get access to the footage. To resolve this issue I simply
went back out and gathered new footage to replace the clips I couldn’t get onto my computer. I also
managed to gather this new footage even during very bad weather that didn’t allow filming without
equipment being damaged, to resolve the weather issue I adapted to the situation and instead decided to
film inside a flannels store.
What was the outcome of the project/task?
• The outcome of my project I think could be accurately described as an educational documentary that
entertainingly informs the audience on certain foundational aspects of the subject matter, in this case being
the underground fashion/music industry. The editing style, visual aesthetic and techniques that appear in
the final product I also think are professional and add only positives to the project, the format is concise and
a great layout for sectioning off different portions of information thus making it much easier for the
consumer to watch. Overall I would say most of the aspects of my documentary are of high quality, there are
some negative aspects however but I feel as though they are overshadowed by all of the good things.
Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
How did you feel about the project before
you started?
• I felt optimistic and excited to get started, I knew I had the knowledge and experience to create something
of accuracy regarding information and facts of the industry, reminding myself of this really helped with
confidence going into the projects early stages. My mindset and overall outlook on the project going into it
was definitely more bad than good, I didn’t really have too many worries, I was more excited than anything
since I would be able to adapt my thoughts and feelings on a subject I am passionate about into an
educational style product that other people can watch, the thought of being able to express my opinions to
others was a new but intriguing concept me.
What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
• I think my project development was very useful, it helped me refine a
lot of different aspects of my project and really helped perfect a lot of
important things to consider when creating a documentary. In the
early stages of planning there were a few issues moving forward with
my work, this is where my project development really helped me out
as it allowed me to resolve an issues that where getting in the way of
progression.
Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
• Yes I did have a contributor/collaborator. Alfie Horwell helped me a lot not only in production but also in
the research and development stages of the project, to be more specific because of his large knowledge
base he was featured in my documentary as an interviewee, his answers were of great value and added a lot
of interesting points to the documentary so he was definitely a great choice for a collaborator. He was also in
most of the background clips I used for my work featuring in and displaying a lot of related outfits/fashion
pieces.
How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• I felt pretty happy and relieved, happy because I was mostly satisfied
with the final product, I met all of the targets I set for the project and
overall felt pretty good about the quality of my work. I felt relieved
because there was a couple of technical problems that took place, I
couldn’t log into premiere pro for quite some time so upon
completion, I felt very relieved that I wouldn’t have to deal with any
of the technical issues anymore.
Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• One of the good points about my project I think is the accuracy of the information I provided on certain
topics, I tried really hard only to include facts and true statements, I think I successfully portrayed my subject
matter in an accurate and honest way.
• Another good attribute I think my work displays is a consistent visual aesthetic, I maintained this theme
throughout and tied my editing techniques into it also. I think the theme I chose was suitable considering
the subject matter being discussed within the documentary.
• A 3rd thing I think was a positive aspect of my work was the clear sectioning of different parts of
the documentary, I had an intro, interview section, informative section and an outro, I made clear which
stage the documentary was in by using title cards before each section started, I think this is very good as it
made the product easier to consume.
What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• At one point during production I wasn’t able to transfer any of the footage from my camera to my pc, this
meant I couldn’t edit the footage or use it for my production. To solve this issue I simply replaced the
footage, I had left over clips from past projects that I decided to use and to replace the rest I just went back
out to my recording locations and gathered some more clips, I got these clips on my phone since I can
actually transfer them onto my pc this way.
• Another challenge I faced during production was time management, it was nearing the end of the time we
had for production and I hadn't made much substantial progress, to fix this I sacrificed some free time at
home and instead spent it catching up and finishing off any work that needed to be in by the deadline.
• A 3rd challenge I faced during production was creativity issues, I settled on a specific visual aesthetic for my
documentary but wasn’t sure how I could make it look interesting. I had a browse through some of the
different editing effects I could use in hopes of finding something that may resolve my issue, which worked
out quite well.
What were the negative points about the
experience, and what could you have done to
improve them?
• One of the main negative aspects about the project was probably having to go back out to the recording
locations again to replace footage that I hadn't gathered the first time, this was rather annoying and an
inconvenience, to stop this from happening in the future I think I could create a check list of all of the
different types of shots and footage I want to gather on that day, this way I have a physical indicator of how
much footage I have got and how much more I need to get. Another negative point was having to rush to
finish work, as I previously mentioned, I didn’t manage my time very well so I struggles to get everything
done, to make sure this doesn’t happen again I will make sure to be completely aware of how much time I
have for the project and take an educated guess at how long certain parts of my project will take, this way I
can formulate an effective time management plan.
How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
• I would rate the final piece a satisfactory, there are a few reasons for this, I think the documentary had some
good or even excellent aspects to it but overall I would round it to a satisfactory. The consistent visual
aesthetic was definitely a strong point, maintaining a theme is definitely a professional attribute and my
work does this well in my opinion. I think what brought the rating down is probably the lack of density of
information in the documentary, the product feels slightly empty to me, information isn't linear and is split
up, there will be a couple of lines of information and then a random compilation of clips for 20 seconds or so
and then more information, I don’t like this really and hope to improve upon this in the future.
What is your opinion of your final piece? What
elements do you think are successful and why?
• My opinion on my piece is pretty neutral, I accomplished most of the
things I wanted in my work but am slightly disappointed with the final
product, it appears bland and potentially boring, it's not very artistic
or colorful, although I think the format is very professional, the
relaying of information is high quality also. There are good things and
bad things which leaves me with a neutral opinion.
How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the medium you worked in?
• I think this is probably the best part about my work, I believe I near perfectly applied the genre conventions
and characteristics of the medium I chose to work in to my documentary, the visual aesthetic I used was very
reminiscent of many of the underground music videos, the editing style and techniques are also very
commonly displayed in multiple mediums within the industry. The songs I implemented into my
documentary also conformed to my chosen style and aesthetic.
How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
I think the design and visual aesthetic of my documentary appealed to my target audience very well, I think
one of the reasons for this is the visual aesthetic I created through usage of interesting editing styles and
effects that could be considered 'genre conventions', since the techniques I used are also consistently displayed
within different popular products in the industry, this appealed directly to the target audiences already
established interests and artistic, editing preferences. I also used clips that showed off underground fashion
pieces of clothing and underground artists whilst education the audience on these things.
Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
In what ways was the overall project a
success?
• I think the visual aesthetic of my product was overall a success, although I mentioned a couple of down sides
that came with my chosen aesthetic, I definitely believe one of the great things about it was the consistency
and the relevance it had when it came to the content of the documentary, I implemented it perfectly into my
product as a genre convention. I also believe that the length and format of the product was quite good, it
wasn’t too long and the informative didn’t seem cramped or too much.
What elements did not go well and why?
• I think I could have probably done a bit better with the audio,
specifically the audio levels of the individual sounds I used in the
documentary, listening back to it I think the levels and volume of
some parts of the voice over overpowered the background music and
some times where the music overpowered the voice over too. Also I
think it would have probably been better and felt more genuine if I
did the voice over myself instead of using ai.
How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• I think because this was the first time I have done a documentary,
informational type product, my skills definitely developed a lot. I
found that my ability to convey an educational message and getting
my point across was improving a lot, I felt much more confident in my
ability to offer factual information. I also think my ability to format a
documentary in an easily consumable and visually aesthetic way has
improved a lot because of this project.
What meaning and messages did you want to
convey and were you successful?
• I just wanted to educate the audience on the diversity and large amount of
different styles of each sub genre of the underground, music and fashion are
extremely diverse and have hundreds of different styles, I think I portrayed and
educated pretty well. By including lots of information on the underground and by
showcasing some of the different styles I believe I definitely achieved my goal.
What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
• I showed my product to a few people and I received some valuable
information that has positively impacted the way I will operate in the
future. As an example of the feedback I received, one of the
individuals who watched my documentary mentioned how the visual
aesthetic was very reminiscent of the style commonly used in other
underground music/fashion production work like music videos,
interviews etc. They also mentioned that the ai voice over felt a bit
weird and out of place.
What would you do differently in the future
and why?
• I would make sure I manage my time better, I think this is a very
important aspect of production, the amount of time I have to create
something directly correlates to the quality of the final product
whenever I make something. Another thing I would do differently is
be more artistic, most of the transitions between my clips are very
basic and not very entertaining, this could bore people while
watching so in the future I will work on this and try to improve it.
What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and why?
• Because of this project I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge that will for sure help me in the future with
upcoming projects. One example of the valuable knowledge I have gained is the awareness of the true
importance of time management, before this I wasn’t sure of how important time management was, but
now I am completely aware that it is in fact one of the most important aspects.
Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
• If I was making a similar product in the future, I would make sure to put in 100% of my effort rather than
putting in just enough for somewhat of a satisfactory product, I believe I am holding myself back significantly
by not putting my all into both the written and production aspects of the work I produce, so next time I will
for sure make sure to try my hardest and I know my work will have majorly improved because of this.
What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
• I think I could develop better time management skills/habits, at the moment it doesn’t seen that I am too
good at managing my time effectively, ensuring that all work is completed within the deadline, or if I do
complete it within the deadline, more times than not I rushed at the end to finish. This is definitely a skill I
need to develop in order to work at a professional level in the future. Another attribute I think I should
improve so that I can work at a professional level is putting in effort, I very very rarely put 100% effort into
my work, I am fully aware that I can do quite a lot better in both written work and production, but some
times I just don’t have the motivation for it. Improving this negative attribute I have and making sure I do
indeed input all of my effort into my work would probably impact my work the most.
How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
I think brushing up on my premiere pro editing skills would definitely
be a good idea and would most certainly help me out with future
projects in the future, to do this I could just watch a couple of YouTube
tutorials expanding my knowledge on how to use premiere pro, I could
either research specific editing techniques or styles or I could instead
watch tutorials that explain premiere pro as a whole. I was also
thinking that I could start to learn more audio editing skills, I could
research on different audio editing software, try them all out and
decide on one I like the most, then from there learn that software to a
high level. If I do both of these things the 2 main editing types, audio
and visual will have improved a lot.

What do you think about your project development and how did it help you to refine your idea? • I think my project development was very useful, it helped me refine a lot of different aspects of my project and really helped perfect a lot of important things to consider when creating a documentary. In the early stages of planning there were a few issues moving forward with my work, this is where my project development really helped me out as it allowed me to resolve an issues that where getting in the way of progression.
  • 11. Did you collaborate on your project or engage contributors, etc? • Yes I did have a contributor/collaborator. Alfie Horwell helped me a lot not only in production but also in the research and development stages of the project, to be more specific because of his large knowledge base he was featured in my documentary as an interviewee, his answers were of great value and added a lot of interesting points to the documentary so he was definitely a great choice for a collaborator. He was also in most of the background clips I used for my work featuring in and displaying a lot of related outfits/fashion pieces.
  • 12. How did you feel when the project was completed and why? • I felt pretty happy and relieved, happy because I was mostly satisfied with the final product, I met all of the targets I set for the project and overall felt pretty good about the quality of my work. I felt relieved because there was a couple of technical problems that took place, I couldn’t log into premiere pro for quite some time so upon completion, I felt very relieved that I wouldn’t have to deal with any of the technical issues anymore.
  • 13. Evaluating the project In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment. An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of the success of the project
  • 14. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible] • One of the good points about my project I think is the accuracy of the information I provided on certain topics, I tried really hard only to include facts and true statements, I think I successfully portrayed my subject matter in an accurate and honest way. • Another good attribute I think my work displays is a consistent visual aesthetic, I maintained this theme throughout and tied my editing techniques into it also. I think the theme I chose was suitable considering the subject matter being discussed within the documentary. • A 3rd thing I think was a positive aspect of my work was the clear sectioning of different parts of the documentary, I had an intro, interview section, informative section and an outro, I made clear which stage the documentary was in by using title cards before each section started, I think this is very good as it made the product easier to consume.
  • 15. What challenges did you face and how did you respond to them? Try and think of at least 3... • At one point during production I wasn’t able to transfer any of the footage from my camera to my pc, this meant I couldn’t edit the footage or use it for my production. To solve this issue I simply replaced the footage, I had left over clips from past projects that I decided to use and to replace the rest I just went back out to my recording locations and gathered some more clips, I got these clips on my phone since I can actually transfer them onto my pc this way. • Another challenge I faced during production was time management, it was nearing the end of the time we had for production and I hadn't made much substantial progress, to fix this I sacrificed some free time at home and instead spent it catching up and finishing off any work that needed to be in by the deadline. • A 3rd challenge I faced during production was creativity issues, I settled on a specific visual aesthetic for my documentary but wasn’t sure how I could make it look interesting. I had a browse through some of the different editing effects I could use in hopes of finding something that may resolve my issue, which worked out quite well.
  • 16. What were the negative points about the experience, and what could you have done to improve them? • One of the main negative aspects about the project was probably having to go back out to the recording locations again to replace footage that I hadn't gathered the first time, this was rather annoying and an inconvenience, to stop this from happening in the future I think I could create a check list of all of the different types of shots and footage I want to gather on that day, this way I have a physical indicator of how much footage I have got and how much more I need to get. Another negative point was having to rush to finish work, as I previously mentioned, I didn’t manage my time very well so I struggles to get everything done, to make sure this doesn’t happen again I will make sure to be completely aware of how much time I have for the project and take an educated guess at how long certain parts of my project will take, this way I can formulate an effective time management plan.
  • 17. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating] • I would rate the final piece a satisfactory, there are a few reasons for this, I think the documentary had some good or even excellent aspects to it but overall I would round it to a satisfactory. The consistent visual aesthetic was definitely a strong point, maintaining a theme is definitely a professional attribute and my work does this well in my opinion. I think what brought the rating down is probably the lack of density of information in the documentary, the product feels slightly empty to me, information isn't linear and is split up, there will be a couple of lines of information and then a random compilation of clips for 20 seconds or so and then more information, I don’t like this really and hope to improve upon this in the future.
  • 18. What is your opinion of your final piece? What elements do you think are successful and why? • My opinion on my piece is pretty neutral, I accomplished most of the things I wanted in my work but am slightly disappointed with the final product, it appears bland and potentially boring, it's not very artistic or colorful, although I think the format is very professional, the relaying of information is high quality also. There are good things and bad things which leaves me with a neutral opinion.
  • 19. How well did your project apply the characteristics and conventions of the medium you worked in? • I think this is probably the best part about my work, I believe I near perfectly applied the genre conventions and characteristics of the medium I chose to work in to my documentary, the visual aesthetic I used was very reminiscent of many of the underground music videos, the editing style and techniques are also very commonly displayed in multiple mediums within the industry. The songs I implemented into my documentary also conformed to my chosen style and aesthetic.
  • 20. How did you design appeal to your target audience? I think the design and visual aesthetic of my documentary appealed to my target audience very well, I think one of the reasons for this is the visual aesthetic I created through usage of interesting editing styles and effects that could be considered 'genre conventions', since the techniques I used are also consistently displayed within different popular products in the industry, this appealed directly to the target audiences already established interests and artistic, editing preferences. I also used clips that showed off underground fashion pieces of clothing and underground artists whilst education the audience on these things.
  • 21. Analysis In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how your decisions informed the project development and the success of the outcome.
  • 22. In what ways was the overall project a success? • I think the visual aesthetic of my product was overall a success, although I mentioned a couple of down sides that came with my chosen aesthetic, I definitely believe one of the great things about it was the consistency and the relevance it had when it came to the content of the documentary, I implemented it perfectly into my product as a genre convention. I also believe that the length and format of the product was quite good, it wasn’t too long and the informative didn’t seem cramped or too much.
  • 23. What elements did not go well and why? • I think I could have probably done a bit better with the audio, specifically the audio levels of the individual sounds I used in the documentary, listening back to it I think the levels and volume of some parts of the voice over overpowered the background music and some times where the music overpowered the voice over too. Also I think it would have probably been better and felt more genuine if I did the voice over myself instead of using ai.
  • 24. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember, skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation, time management, communication, etc as well] • I think because this was the first time I have done a documentary, informational type product, my skills definitely developed a lot. I found that my ability to convey an educational message and getting my point across was improving a lot, I felt much more confident in my ability to offer factual information. I also think my ability to format a documentary in an easily consumable and visually aesthetic way has improved a lot because of this project.
  • 25. What meaning and messages did you want to convey and were you successful? • I just wanted to educate the audience on the diversity and large amount of different styles of each sub genre of the underground, music and fashion are extremely diverse and have hundreds of different styles, I think I portrayed and educated pretty well. By including lots of information on the underground and by showcasing some of the different styles I believe I definitely achieved my goal.
  • 26. What feedback did you get from your peers and viewings? • I showed my product to a few people and I received some valuable information that has positively impacted the way I will operate in the future. As an example of the feedback I received, one of the individuals who watched my documentary mentioned how the visual aesthetic was very reminiscent of the style commonly used in other underground music/fashion production work like music videos, interviews etc. They also mentioned that the ai voice over felt a bit weird and out of place.
  • 27. What would you do differently in the future and why? • I would make sure I manage my time better, I think this is a very important aspect of production, the amount of time I have to create something directly correlates to the quality of the final product whenever I make something. Another thing I would do differently is be more artistic, most of the transitions between my clips are very basic and not very entertaining, this could bore people while watching so in the future I will work on this and try to improve it.
  • 28. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from academic literature and professionals has helped and why? • Because of this project I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge that will for sure help me in the future with upcoming projects. One example of the valuable knowledge I have gained is the awareness of the true importance of time management, before this I wasn’t sure of how important time management was, but now I am completely aware that it is in fact one of the most important aspects.
  • 29. Action Plan This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and identify ways you could develop.
  • 30. If you were making a similar project in the future, what would you do differently? • If I was making a similar product in the future, I would make sure to put in 100% of my effort rather than putting in just enough for somewhat of a satisfactory product, I believe I am holding myself back significantly by not putting my all into both the written and production aspects of the work I produce, so next time I will for sure make sure to try my hardest and I know my work will have majorly improved because of this.
  • 31. What personal attributes could you develop to ensure you are working at a professional level? • I think I could develop better time management skills/habits, at the moment it doesn’t seen that I am too good at managing my time effectively, ensuring that all work is completed within the deadline, or if I do complete it within the deadline, more times than not I rushed at the end to finish. This is definitely a skill I need to develop in order to work at a professional level in the future. Another attribute I think I should improve so that I can work at a professional level is putting in effort, I very very rarely put 100% effort into my work, I am fully aware that I can do quite a lot better in both written work and production, but some times I just don’t have the motivation for it. Improving this negative attribute I have and making sure I do indeed input all of my effort into my work would probably impact my work the most.
  • 32. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example, webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications. I think brushing up on my premiere pro editing skills would definitely be a good idea and would most certainly help me out with future projects in the future, to do this I could just watch a couple of YouTube tutorials expanding my knowledge on how to use premiere pro, I could either research specific editing techniques or styles or I could instead watch tutorials that explain premiere pro as a whole. I was also thinking that I could start to learn more audio editing skills, I could research on different audio editing software, try them all out and decide on one I like the most, then from there learn that software to a high level. If I do both of these things the 2 main editing types, audio and visual will have improved a lot.
