Des Moines: This year 63,000 seniors in Iowa have Alzheimer’s, which is the 6th leading cause
of death in the state. June is designated as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. In
observation of the month, Luther Park Adult Day Center will host a BBQ and Open House
Sunday, June 12th 11 am – 1 pm.
Luther Park Adult Day Center is a newly open facility that aims to engage individuals who have
cognitive impairments. Each participant has their own personalized wellness program put
together by a professional. Along with their own program, the center offers many activities to
keep everyone active.
“The Open House will provide our neighbors and others the chance to take look at what Luther
Park Adult Day Center has to offer the community and at the same time, educate themselves on
issues facing older adults,” says Julie Reed, the Center’s Director.
The Luther Park Adult Day Center ensures that loved ones are in great care while at the center.
With flexible scheduling, nutritious meals and snacks, participants are well taken care of by a
staff trained with an emphasis on dementia. Outdoor gardening, art, music and pet therapies are
all regular activities at the Day Center.
The Center helps older adults feel more independent and potentially increases their functioning.
Families can expect support and assistance from a staff that will provide counseling and
education. The Center also offers optional add-on services, like spa treatments and on-site
podiatrist visits.
The BBQ and Open House will have plenty of food along with prizes and will give the public a
chance to explore and ask questions about the Day Center. Visitors can see the activities and
services offered to older adults. People can also learn about the family and caregiver support
provided by the staff. The Center is currently accepting new participants.
Also the Luther Park Community is offering an educational class on Alzheimer’s at The Garden
at Luther Park Community June 9th 2 pm – 3 pm. The class is aimed at caregivers and the
questions surrounding an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Susan Callison, a program specialist for the
Alzheimer’s Association will be facilitated the class.
Older adults account for over 15% of Iowa’s population, with over 51,000 of them living in Polk
County. Almost 150,000 Iowans over the age of 65 have at least one type of disability. As the
baby boomer generation ages, the number of older adults diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, dementia
or other cognitive issues will rise dramatically. See how Luther Park Adult Day Center can help
and give professional support for our older adults living with cognitive issues.
