The Kontro Quarterly Salutes Stuart McPherson
As an HMD employee since 2002, Stuart McPherson has served in a variety of roles
beginning with pump fitter and progressing to HQ Performance Testing, manual machining,
dynamically balancing components, finishing, labelling, packing, forklift, and paint-applicator,
for which he achieved a NACE Coating Inspector Level 1 Certification. For six years, Stuart
worked the nightshift at HMD, utilizing his multi-tasking skills to manufacture and paint all the
urgent jobs that required 24-hour turnaround to ensure customer continuity and satisfaction.
Stuart “landed his current dream job” in April 2014 in the Customer & Technical Services
Department. As a Field Service Engineer, Stuart travels to customers around the globe to
provide technical support, training, and troubleshooting analysis to ensure added value for
companies owning and operating HMD Kontro products.
An exciting bonus for Stuart has been completion of off-shore training for deployment to offshore platforms by
helicopter, which to quote him, “is a TOTALLY AWESOME experience!” In addition, he has been part of the
HMD CaTS team, achieving a second NACE Coating Inspector Lever 2 Certification. ILM Level 2 Training has
enhanced Stuart’s skills in understanding people’s differences in order to better train others in his guiding principle
of best practices.
Supported by his lovely family consisting of his wife Steph and their three energetic,
engaged children, teenage daughter Caitlin and sons Alex and Ewan, Stuart keeps
busy on the weekends, “running a Mum and Dad taxi service”.

HMD Success Stories
• HPGS - For a condensate polishing application at a nuclear plant with powerful 400 psig suction pressure,
HPGS pumps replaced API pumps with Chesterton seals that were incapable of handling the required
application pressure.
• HPGS - For a 500 psig suction pressure water boosting application, a model HPGS pmp was put in service for a
chemical processor.
• HPGSP - A wash water (sour water) application at a refinery with 1300 psig suction pressure needed to more
efficiently clean heat exchangers without taking them offline was solved with installation of HPGSP pumps.
• GSP - Pumping HF acid at a refinery alkylation unit in Acid Rerun Service, GSP pumps replaced top-top end
suction centrifugal mechanically sealed pumps.
• GSP pumps were installed to transfer benzene between storage tanks in the tank farm area of a local refinery.
• GSA pumps in caustic service for an electronics manufacturer replaced mechanically sealed ANSI pumps.

What are Magnet Drive Sealless Pumps?
The sealless pump is a conventional centrifugal pump without packed housing or mechanical seals.
The dynamic seal normally used to seal the impeller shaft has been replaced by a static containment
shell to form a completely sealed liquid-end / pressure boundary.
In a sealless pump, prime-mover energy is transmitted to the sealed-liquid end by a bank of external magnets
passing force through the containment shell to the impeller shaft.
The Facts:
Mechanical seals on pumps are designed to
maintain their seal as long as possible by leak-
ing small amounts of fluid to keep the seal faces
lubricated. The leaked fluid is then boiled off
(fugitive emission).
Seals, like bearings, must wear. As they wear,
the faces lose their sealing effect and any
pumped liquid will seep through the seal.
A fugitive emission can be costly in terms of time, money, and safety in the workplace. Environmental
controls, occupational safety, and product liability in today’s workplace are all of paramount importance
to process plant operators.
Most companies frequently have seal maintenance or support programs in order to reduce continuous
leakage problems. Leakage involves time, extra money, and an inventory of spare parts, as well as the
inconvenience of plant downtime when replacement seals are required.
