Do you know the performance of your containers or Docker Hosts? I will show you how to get up and running quickly with 2 different Open Source Docker Monitoring solutions. We will quickly cover Docker Stats as the basis and discover how Google cAdvisor gathers metrics for our 2 solutions. We will then build upon this basis to build a Docker Monitoring solution with cAdvisor+InfluxDB+Grafana and then cAdvisor+Prometheus and create dashboards based on the gathered monitoring metrics with Grafna and Prometheus.

The SDACK architecture stands for Spark, Docker, Akka, Cassandra, and Kafka. At TrendMicro, we adopted the SDACK architecture to implement a security event inspection platform for APT attack analysis. In this talk, we will introduce SDACK stack with Spark lambda architecture, Akka and Kafka for streaming data pipeline, Cassandra for time series data, and Docker for microservices. Specifically, we will show you how we Dockerize each SDACK component to facilitate the RD team of algorithms development, help the QA team test the product easily, and use the Docker as a Service strategy to ship our products to customers. Next, we will show you how we monitor each Docker container and adjust the resource usage based on monitoring metrics. And then, we will share our Docker security policy which ensures our products are safety before shipping to customers. After that, we'll show you how we develop an all-in-one Docker based data product and scale it out to multi-host Docker cluster to solve the big data problem. Finally, we will share some challenges we faced during the product development and some lesson learned.

At JCPenney, Black Friday is one of our most critical shopping periods, both in stores and increasingly online. Hundreds of millions of dollars are on the line for us in a narrow shopping window so scaling to handle the traffic and being able to deploy promotions and fix issues without disruption to the website and our business are critical. Our prior way of delivering applications was built on a waterfall model, locked in to a set of ISV vendor dependencies, with rigid silos. It was too slow and expensive to deploy changes and keep pace with our business. We needed an application delivery platform that can handle the scale of Black Friday, and allow us to adapt our systems as our business continues to evolve. In our DockerCon session, we will tell you how we are transforming JCPenney’s omnichannel business with Docker and open solutions like Jenkins, Spring cloud, Netflix OSS and Ansible. We went live in our first iteration in just two months, and then on-boarded over 30 services in the first 6 months. We learned quite a bit along the way and you'll hear why we made an important decision to switch from Docker Community Edition to Docker Enterprise Edition. Our new cloud-native, Dockerized systems handle over 100,000 deployments per year and can scale to handle events like Black Friday with zero issues.

One area of the Docker ecosystem that saw a lot of innovation in the past year is container orchestration systems. This session compares and contrasts various Docker orchestration systems (Swarm, Machine, and Compose), the batteries included with Docker itself, Mesos, Kubernetes, CoreOS/Fleet, Deis, Cloud Foundry, and Tutum. It includes a demo of how to deploy a Java 8 app with MongoDB on several of these systems. The evolving needs of IT and the advent of agile development and deployment strategies has led to the emergence of “containerization,” an alternative to full machine virtualization in which an application is encapsulated in a container with its own operating environment. Containerization is an attractive solution that enables developers to iterate faster. It also offers additional benefits that address the overhead associated with virtual machines, allowing for higher utilization of resources in the software-defined data center (SDDC). Although containerization isn’t a new concept, Docker, developed by Docker, Inc., has been widely cited as the implementation of choice due to its broad industry support, standardization, and comprehensive breadth of capability. In the company’s words, Docker is “an open platform for building, shipping, and running distributed applications. It gives programmers, development teams and operations engineers the common toolbox they need to take advantage of the distributed and networked nature of modern applications.” As such, Docker simplifies application lifecycle management from development to deployment and enables application portability. This simplification is critical for enterprises, considering that there are multiple hosting options for an application, either in the public cloud or private cloud infrastructure. This paper outlines F5’s direction on using containers within F5 technology and for supporting Docker for application delivery and security. Before we discuss this strategy, it is important to recognize data center pain points and why these technologies are critical for the next generation enterprise application delivery.
