INTERNATIONAL FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
2022 Q&A WITH IFFL FOUNDER BRIAN SLACK
(Keith Jarrett)
“Listen up! Mark down these important dates: Sunday, May 1, 2022, the International Fantasy Football League’s 8th Annual Draft
Lottery. Saturday, July 16, 2022, the IFFL’s 8th Annual Draft. And September 8, 2022, the International Fantasy Football League’s 8th
season officially kicks off. Following the transcripts to Brian’s comments, we’ve included the updated 2021 IFFL Final Standings, stats
and history. Brian, it’s all yours.”
(Brian’s opening remarks)
“Thank you, Keith and to all the media members and fans who sent us your questions.
“It sure was quite an exciting 2021 season for fantasy football leagues, wasn’t it? It’s good to see the NFL is getting back to some form
of normality. In the IFFL, all twelve teams went into the final two weeks of the regular season with a mathematical chance of making the
playoffs. The league has always been extremely competitive. Year in and year out, the parity of talent between #1 and #12 is razor thin.
2. “We congratulate Mexico’s Rene Chavez and his Dragones for capturing their first world title. I’m sure Rene’s fellow countryman Jorge
Boada and Bleeding Blue share Rene’s joy. Congratulations also goes out to the United Kingdom’s Gordon Dedman and the Men of
Steel who made it all the way to World Bowl for the first time in their franchise’s 7-year history. To date, 5 of the league’s 7 competing
nations have won the 7 previous World Bowls, specifically Canada, China, Mexico, United Kingdom, and the United States. Australia
and Russia are looking for their first world championship title.
“Now we officially start the IFFL’s off-season program to usher in our 8th year. For the third-straight season, all twelve team owners are
returning. Everyone in the IFFL is respectful towards one another. Everyone is content. That sure makes my job a lot easier.
“The only change to report is we are looking to bring the International Fantasy Football League to a major broadcasting network.
Bringing the IFFL to any television or radio network is a no-brainer. We have seven nations competing, including the world’s three
superpowers, China, and Russia, and the USA. I defy anyone to find any fantasy football league that has those three nations
competing. Our world’s politicians can’t bring these nations to the negotiating table. But the IFFL certainly has. Bringing the IFFL in as a
weekly or daily show would be an instant hit and would take barely any time to soar to #1. It is a million-dollar baby. No doubt about
that.
“Now I’m open to your questions.”
(On how an IFFL show would be different from other fantasy football shows)
“Look at all the fantasy football shows out there. They’re all the same, three, four panelists looking like a bunch of bobble heads waging
their tongues, all commenting on the same subject matter. Ours would be different in the sense that it would be a variety show
demonstrating the popularity of the NFL and fantasy football on a global scale. Each episode one or two of our league’s team owners
would be interviewed with interrupters on hand to translate. We’ll also share information that no one else has. I’m not saying what that
is, otherwise, copycats will start coming out of the woodwork. I don’t want to use the word ‘educate’, either. I’ve always thought that is
very condescending like people are ignorant. Instead, I like to use the term informative.”
(On if the IFFL plans to expand to allow other nations to compete in the league)
“No, at least not for the 2022 season. There are only three ways any expansion is possible. One, if a team owner from a nation that has
multiple team owners like the USA, UK, China, or Mexico decide to step down, then we’ll bring in an additional nation. A drawing
between Brazil, France, Germany, India, and Japan will determine which country will gain entry to the IFFL competition. In event
nations that have just one team owner like Australia, Canada or Russia decide to step down, we will replace them with a fellow
countryman to maintain that country’s participation. The second option is to expand from 12 teams to 14 teams. The problem there is
the more teams you have, the less strategy is involved, whereas the more luck comes into play. Also, there is a lot less in the free agent
pool to rearm in order to become or remain competitive. The third option is to form an 8-team minor league of sorts, where the two top
finishers would advance to the IFFL and the two teams who finished worst would be sent to the minors.”
(On which player will be draft first in most leagues)
“Probably Jonathan Taylor, and rightfully so. Some might draft Henry. It’ll be between those two.”
(On which college player will be selected in April’s NFL Draft)
“Alabama tackle Evan Neil. Even though he’s a junior, the kid is ready to make the jump into the pros.”
(On which player fans should watch out for)
“Former-Clemson Tiger and Louisiana native Travis Etienne. You’ll remember he was the Jaguars 2nd round draft pick, 25th overall,
last year. I also have to include Detroit’s D’Andre Swift. He’s also a former 2nd rounder out of Georgia, and like Etienne, Swift has a
national title under his belt. Unfortunately, both of their seasons were cut short by injuries, last year.”
(On which team should we see vast improvements in 2022)
“The Detroit Lions. They have the 2nd and 32nd overall picks in the first round in April’s NFL Draft. More than likely, they’ll use the #2
selection to land Michigan DE Aidan Hutchinson, who is hands down the best defensive player in this year’s college class. Some draft
experts think they will use the 32nd pick on a QB. I don’t think so, at least I don’t think they should. This year’s crop of draft-eligible and
free agent quarterbacks is thin. They really need to go out there and get a deep-threat receiver and they can find that missing link on
the free agent market with players like Davante Adams, Godwin, Robinson, Gallup, and Mike Williams all looking to cash in. Goff can
still get the job done, but unless the front office can land a big-name wideout, his situation will remain iffy, at best. Bridgewater and
Mariota are on the market as alternatives, but I don’t think either one will get you to the Promised Land. Focus on the defense through
the draft, concentrate on the offense via free agency, and we could see the Lions shake things up in the NFC North.”
(On any surprises to expect)
“Yeah, actually, I have one; Stay away from Ezekiel Elliott. 9 of his games in 2022 will be against 7 of last year’s top-ten rush defenses,
including division rivals Philly and Washington, twice. Last year, Elliott faced 6 top-ten rush defenses, and was held to under 100-yards
each time.”
(On where Arron Rodgers and Jimmy Garoppolo might go)
“Actually, as a Saints fan, I’d like to see either QB in the Big Easy. Rodgers’ best bet is Tennessee. With all the pieces on offense and
most in place on defense, things sure look mighty inviting. Add Rodgers to the mix and you have an instant Super Bowl contender.
Garoppolo would be a great fit in Pittsburgh. Where Rodgers counts on instincts, Garoppolo is more basics, management, and
technique, which fits perfectly into the Steelers scheme.”
(On why China and Russia, despite alleged human rights violations, are still permitted to compete in the league)
3. “I don’t get into government affairs of other nations. What they do is their business; not mine. I’m not here to separate people. I’m here
to bring them together. The only country I criticize is the United States of America, whose own hands are filthy. Consequently, that
disqualifies our politicians from passing judgement on any other entity.”
