STARLAND DAIRY
Founded in 1909 by the Morekis
family, Starland Dairy was known
for serving the community from
the very beginning. Construction of
the now decaying building, began
in 1932. After almost fifty years in
business, Starland had to close its
doors in 1982.
Today, the building, which
consists of roughly 12,000
sq.ft. of occupiable space is
rapidly deteriorating through
natural occurrences, assisted by
vandalism. Companies like design
management firm, The Volta
Collaborative have shown interest
in saving the historic structure and
utilizing it as their own.
“Our design philosophy is based
on meta-design, a conceptual
framework aimed at creating
social, economic and technical
innovations in which new forms of
multidisciplinary collaboration can
take place. Our philosophy is about
understanding the complexity of
human needs. Inspired by the way
living systems work, our approach
aims to create innovative systems
and services capable of responding
to particular community needs.”
Utilizing the designated program,
a concept was formed for a mixed
use building that would not only
benefit the company inhabiting
the space but also service the
growing area. A challenge for the
new design of the building is the
need to preserve the history and
structure of the Starland Dairy that
is still standing. This means that
the existing facade as well as load
bearing walls or columns may not
be changed. The building’s new
purpose will be a reflection of the
Starland Dairy from 80 years ago.

The program for Trustees Market
encompasses an overall site
redevelopment that includes a
structured public market, new civic
space and enhanced connectivity
within the Trustees Garden Site on
the eastern boundary of Savannah.
Utilizing concepts of urban
agriculture, a system of raised bed
allotment gardens are integrated
into the overall design of the
garden. These elements are not
only aesthetically pleasing but
functional. Users are encouraged to
produce goods within their individual
allotment and on market days transfer
product across the connecting bridge
to the farmers pavilion.

TESLA DEALERSHIP
Detroit, Michigan
American culture is car culture: the drive in movie,
the drive thru window, the highway, the suburb; all
developed from the American love affair with the
automobile. We fled the city in the car, we commute
in the car, we eat in the car -- we live in the car. The
car has freed us, separated us, divided us -- defined us.
Tesla will build its US flagship in downtown Detroit next
to the beautifully decaying Union Central Station. This
will create a rich juxtaposition of ornate designating
architecture next to a crisp modern structure.
Building Type:
Car Dealership; Tesla Car Co.
Size/Scale Requirements: 25,000 sq.ft. +/-
Program Details: Multi-story gallery space,
organic food restaurant and separate cafe,
overnight accommodations, and Tesla museum.

Historic Buildings of Significance in ‘Over the Rhine’
Wind and Sun Path Diagram Relevant to Site
The IAC Cincinnati developed through
harnessing the idea that living and
working within a concentrated
community that supports itself can
extend that idea into the broader
community to enhance the environment
where others can establish their own
living and working system through out
the area. By harnessing ‘Over the Rhine’s
history, beauty, and desire to thrive;
a facility is created that sets forth the
motion to progress into a positive and
creative future for not only individual
members but a decaying city.
LIVE·MAKE Industrial Arts Center Cincinnati
calls for a membership based facility that
will feature private residences, maker-in-
residence studios, light industrial studios
and an open workshop that will help
shape a new economic opportunity for the
neighborhood. The site includes a building
and undeveloped land. It is located in
a neighborhood recently designated as
an Urban Mix zoning area in order to
encourage a return of manufacturing
and living. This center will be a place for
members to take advantage of evolving
tools and modes of production from the
past and present.

Located in the Charleston Harbor, Shute’s Folly
Island is transformed. Through the renovation of
the historic Castle Pinckney and the preservation
of the slowly depleting island, a new program
establishes historic interaction through form
and the landscape. By using a program that
is almost as old as civilization, the winery and
vineyards preserve the landscape and introduce
new vegetation. As for the Castle itself. The new
construction is placed on top of, and through the
three foot thick brick wall becoming a contrasting
form that penetrates and encompasses the
fort. This interaction and new program draws in
tourist and revenue to a part of Charleston that
has been vacant. The space will commonly be
used for events, field trips to educate about the
history of the island, or to just spend a day on the
harbor. Another, and probably the most pertinent
element of the project is awareness of efficiency
and keeping the island ‘off grid’. Using the natural
resources that are abundant in the harbor; the
wind flow through and the constantly moving
tides. The harbor creates a tunnel effect coming
from the ocean inward due to land formations.
By placing wind turbines in the harbor the energy
that is already present in the site will power the
facility.

MASSING
By creating massings in
Revit and laser cutting
more than fifty layers,
I created an interactive
piece with moving parts
that can be formed and
manipulated.
Although my specific design entry (shown
to the right) was not selected for the
event, I contributed numerous hours
to the production process of the final
pavilion, documentation of the project
and assisted with complications that arose
throughout the construction phase.
Starting with basic paper folding
techniques, different structures were
modeled using Rhino with the intent to
build a full scale bamboo pavilion for
the Scad Sidewalk Arts festival.

Concrete Furniture
Working in a group, students
were assigned the task of
designing and creating some
kind of concrete figure. Paired
with another student, we each
designed a piece of furniture.
Together we calculated the
weight and amount of material
needed for each piece,
constructed framework for our
pieces, and poured the concrete.

Historic Buildings of Significance in ‘Over the Rhine’ Wind and Sun Path Diagram Relevant to Site The IAC Cincinnati developed through harnessing the idea that living and working within a concentrated community that supports itself can extend that idea into the broader community to enhance the environment where others can establish their own living and working system through out the area. By harnessing ‘Over the Rhine’s history, beauty, and desire to thrive; a facility is created that sets forth the motion to progress into a positive and creative future for not only individual members but a decaying city. LIVE·MAKE Industrial Arts Center Cincinnati calls for a membership based facility that will feature private residences, maker-in- residence studios, light industrial studios and an open workshop that will help shape a new economic opportunity for the neighborhood. The site includes a building and undeveloped land. It is located in a neighborhood recently designated as an Urban Mix zoning area in order to encourage a return of manufacturing and living. This center will be a place for members to take advantage of evolving tools and modes of production from the past and present.

Through the renovation of the historic Castle Pinckney and the preservation of the slowly depleting island, a new program establishes historic interaction through form and the landscape. By using a program that is almost as old as civilization, the winery and vineyards preserve the landscape and introduce new vegetation. As for the Castle itself. The new construction is placed on top of, and through the three foot thick brick wall becoming a contrasting form that penetrates and encompasses the fort. This interaction and new program draws in tourist and revenue to a part of Charleston that has been vacant. The space will commonly be used for events, field trips to educate about the history of the island, or to just spend a day on the harbor. Another, and probably the most pertinent element of the project is awareness of efficiency and keeping the island ‘off grid’. Using the natural resources that are abundant in the harbor; the wind flow through and the constantly moving tides. The harbor creates a tunnel effect coming from the ocean inward due to land formations. By placing wind turbines in the harbor the energy that is already present in the site will power the facility. Although my specific design entry (shown to the right) was not selected for the event, I contributed numerous hours to the production process of the final pavilion, documentation of the project and assisted with complications that arose throughout the construction phase. Starting with basic paper folding techniques, different structures were modeled using Rhino with the intent to build a full scale bamboo pavilion for the Scad Sidewalk Arts festival. FOLDING
