Practical Tips to conserve Water
Water is one of the important environmental problems. Climate is becoming hotter and rate of evaporation
has increased tremendously.
Here are some tips that help you to save water:
Recycle water, you use for washing vegetables and fruits, to water gardens and plants.
Wash your car with a bucket of water and sponge than using a hose
Water your plants and garden in the evening to avoid evaporating of water and use
watering can instead of using a hose.
Check both indoor and outdoor installations for leakage.
Upgrade your toilet with new water efficient models.
Select one bottle or glass to drink water for a day. It helps to reduce washing glasses.
Turn off water while you are brushing your teeth, shaving.

4. 2. DESCRIPTIVE TEXT
Water is a chemical substance with a chemical formula H2O. Water is a tasteless, odorless
and transparent liquid at standard temperature and pressure.
Water is a good solvent and is often referred to as the universal solvent. Substances like
salts, sugars, acids, alkalis, and some gases can dissolve in water.
Pure water has a low conductivity. The boiling point of water (and all other liquids) is dependent on
the barometric pressure. For example, on the top of Mt. Everest water boils at 68 °C (154 °F),
compared to 100 °C (212 °F) at sea level. Conversely, water deep in the ocean near geothermal vents
can reach temperatures of hundreds of degrees and remain liquid.
ACTIVITY:
A. Read and answer the following questions.
1. What is water?
________________________________________________________________.
2. What are the characteristics of water?

3. What substances can be dissolved in water?

CHANGES IN WATER QUALITY
Water quality changes can be the result of naturally occurring events or as a result of human activity.
When water vapor in the air condenses to form rain, it may pick up tiny air-borne impurities that become
part of the rain drop. As rainwater seeps through rocks or soil, it may dissolve minerals or other water
soluble substances that give the water some of its chemical characteristics. Flowing water picks up many
objects and carries sediments. Water quality also changes with the seasons as temperature, volume of
flow, turbidity and biological activity respond to the seasonal differences.
Apart from the natural changes, Humans are responsible for a great many changes to the quality of
water. These changes can be a result of industrial, agricultural, municipal or recreational activities.
ACTIVITY:
A. Write true (T) or False (F).
1. When water vapor in the air condenses to form clouds. ( )
6. 2. Water quality also changes with the seasons as temperature. ( )
3. Humans are not responsible for a great many changes to the quality of water. ( )
4. Flowing water picks up many objects and carries rocks. ( )
