3. The two mood boards on the two previous slides show a variety of the most well known
Latin artists around the world. All of them have had an impact on not only Latin music but
western music as a whole. Latin music comprises of a range of different styles in which
some of the influential and popular ones are Bachata, Merengue, Salsa, Samba etc. In the
20th century western music had influenced Latin music creating a up rise in Latin rock, pop,
jazz and Reggaeton.
The origin of Latin music goes all the way back to Spain and Portugal's defeat of Americans
in the 16th century as European settlers brought their music overseas. Today Latin music is
usually performed in Spanish and Portuguese with the occasional French language.
Artists like Jennifer Lopez usually sing pop music in English which is successful around the
globe however has done a whole album in Spanish in the past. Other artists like Beyoncé
have also ,as well as having their original song in English, have also done a version of their
own song in Spanish.
Since Latin music is a very broad genre I have decided to focus on the most popular sub
genre of Latin music called Reggaetón. This is because there is a gap in the market for Latin
music most specifically Reggaeton as there are hardly any music magazines around this
genre and sub genre. Doing this genre I think will attract more south American people to
buy magazines as it’s a genre they will know more about and highly enjoy.
Latin Music Background
4. These are some album art covers from the many Latin artists as shown in the first 2 slides. The main colours found in these
covers are red, black, blue and white. This could help me in the design of my magazine as I could make the main house style
the 4 main colours found on these album covers. Almost all of the album covers have a mid-shot or close up of the artist,
this could also help me decide the style of my front cover and how I would like the models picture to be take.

fines and the deflation of rappers through radio television etc. the only means of distribution was pirate
records and word of mouth until 1998. Then the music merged into modern day Reggaeton. Today its

Rise to popularity

these were the situations of the troubled on the inner city life the common themes are still found in
todays modern Reggaeton. Marquesinas (open garages) were used to record and distribute
