Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor Foundation, Inc. Awards Grant To SOS
The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor Foundation, Inc. awarded SOS Community Services a $1,750 grant to
support the Sunny Days summer children’s program.
Since 1921, the Kiwanis Club has worked with many organizations to serve children in the Ann Arbor
area with the help of over 175 members and 100 volunteers. One way the Club continues to deliver
this purpose is through the company Thrift Sale, held every Saturday at the Kiwanis Activity Center at
200 1st Street in Ann Arbor. The Club then rewards proceeds from the sale to various agencies such
as SOS. Each year, the Club also selects an organization to assist through their grant program and
SOS is proud to be the winner of it this year. SOS will officially receive the funds in May.
SOS Community Services’ Summer Days program is designed to provide eight weeks of positive
activities for children whose families are in shelter programs or transitional housing within Washtenaw
County. Thirty children ages 6-12 are welcomed into the program every summer and have the
opportunity to enhance their literacy skills and self-esteem through Book Clubs at the local library.
Other activities consist of arts and crafts, outdoor games and field trips. The program also places
children in a safe environment where they learn how to manage the stresses of homelessness,
substance abuse and domestic violence in weekly social groups. The children also learn essential life
skills such as teamwork and anger management during these social groups. Finally, the program also
gives parents more time to find long-term employment and permanent housing while their children are
in the care of Sunny Days volunteers.
Kiwansi Co-Chairs, Dan Barroughs and Michael Dabbs are one of many staff members who are
pleased to help SOS carry out their goal of reaching out to homeless children as a result of this grant.
“Thank you so much for everything you do to help the children and youth of our community,” Burroghs
and Dabbs said. “It is our honor and privilege to assist you in the great work you do.”
The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor Foundation, Inc. is a global organization of volunteers, dedicated
to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The Ann Arbor Kiwanis Thrift Sale is
staffed by unpaid Kiwanis members and volunteers. The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor Foundation is a
non-profit 509(c)(3) corporation and donations to the Thrift Sale and Foundation may be tax-
deductible. To arrange pick-up of large items, please call 734- 665-0450 or email
donations@A2Kiwanis.org.
