about recognising the extraordinary resources of the Museum Library and making them accessible for use.
The focus is on productive use of the Library’s resources and is output driven – publications (hardcopy and digital), exhibitions
(tangible and virtual) – by both the Museum and the researchers who use it
The Library develops a stronger interaction with tertiary institutions through outreach, summer scholarships, collaborative
development of access to collections
Programme of Museum publications based on Library collections – microfilming and digitising unique Auckland newspapers in
collaboration with other institutions
The Logan Campbell Project – as an exemplar of making important manuscript content online with research analysis …

Knowledge Management
Knowledge management is the process of identifying, collecting, preserving and transforming information into knowledge that is
readily accessible in order to foster innovation and to improve the performance of museum staff. It is based on the assumption that
the potential for sustained improvements exists in the knowledge derived from people, processes, designs and ideas within the
organisation.
A knowledge management programme in the museum would assist with the creation of a culture and structure that promotes
information sharing and learning.
Ways to develop KM with the museum which the library can initiate include knowledge mapping and communities of practice.

Information Management
‘Information management’ is an umbrella term that encompasses all the systems and processes within an organisation for the
creation and use of corporate information. It is not just technology - it is about the organisational, cultural and strategic factors that
must be considered to improve the management of information within organisations.
Librarians are experts in structure of information (’information architecture’), metadata, and content quality.
Also librarians are trained in information audits i.e. identifying the museums resources and information needs; identifying information
flows and processes etc.
Taxonomies and Authority control
Taxonomies and authority control are an integral part of the knowledge and information infrastructure. Librarians are trained in this
area and can provide input on all museum databases.
E-Library
The e-library will provide a dynamic, single portal, from the library website/intranet, to e-resources promoted/created by the library,
covering collections such as e-books, e-journals, digitised resources and databases. It will pull our electronic resources collections
together, so they can be easily accessible for Museum staff and our visitors
(Contributed by Susan).

records and recorded information.
