The Smart City concept is the next step towards a sustainable lifestyle, that exploits the latest, state-of-the-art technologies.
Due to its novelty, scale and complexity, the smartcity approach requires new solutions in the area of communication, realisation and management, too
Among others, Virtual and Augmented reality (VR and AR) can be used effectively to achieve the desired results.
In this presentation we will elaborate the possibilities of these technologies.
2. Introduction
• The Smart City concept is the next step towards a sustainable lifestyle, that exploits
the latest, state-of-the-art technologies.
• Due to its novelty, scale and complexity, the smartcity approach requires new
solutions in the area of communication, realisation and management, too
• Among others, Virtual and Augmented reality (VR and AR) can be used effectively to
achieve the desired results.
• In this presentation we will elaborate the possibilities of these technologies.
3. VR and AR based Smart City solutions
We differentiate between 3 main areas,
and will elaborate one by one, how AR and
VR technologies can be leveraged
in that activity
Communication
Realisation
Management
5. 1. Communication
Everyone should understand the vision that Smart City offers for its citizens.
The simplest and best way to take each stakeholder for a walk in SmartCity.
For this, the most realistic solution is to build Smart City in Virtual Reality.
6. VR Smart City
The virtually built Smart City answers all questions during the virtual
tour.
• The VR visitor gets to know what Smart City can offer.
• He experiences in VR glasses the Smart City’s operating systems as vivid animations.
• Information layers provide additional information.
• Real-time simulated and aggregated data are displayed „in-situ”.
• Presenting certain smart solutions – either on infoboards or as animated 3D models
• Demonstrating the daily operation, a sneak peak into the HQ
• Analytics and statistics
7.
8. Examples to show
• Smart public lighting – lights with motion detectors
• Showing free parking places while driving
• Air pollution data displayed virtually, floating in the air
• In case of an accident, dynamic, real time traffic diversion
10. 2. Realisation
Besides the preliminary communication, Augmented Reality (AR)
can play a significant role in the realisation, too
Tourism
• Displaying historical data on the live camera of the phone
• POIs, showing directions and distances to all important
spots
• Virtual guide, who helps the visitor through his trip
Public utilities
• Displayed on a map – simpler, quicker maintenance
services
Environmental protection
• Selective garbage collection, showing free parking places
13. 3. Management
Even if the creation of a whole, perfect Smart City won’t be realised in the near future, one
of the most promising area of the development in this domain, is the management and
operation of these cities, through Virtual Reality solutions.
The quantity of the incoming real time Smart City data makes the overview and analysis
difficult. Since certain data are only relevant for a given spot of the city, therefore the
creation of the VR Digital Twin of the city is the basis of the solution.
In the operation center, all real time information can be seen in this Digital Twin of the City –
even in VR glasses. In the second phase, also the interventions can happen through VR.
14. Smart City Management
Public utilities’ data
• Power consumption – traffic – environmental pollution - accident – parking places
Live VR view - surveillance
• Installed 360 cameras’ live view- everything can be seen, no blind spots
Real time incoming sensory data
• iOT devices - 5G network – real time remote managements
Integrated, unified data visualisation - common digital twin model.
The operator puts on the VR glass, and enters the digital
reproduction of the City, where all information concerning the City’s
operation appears in the 3D, at a place and time where and when it is
happening at the given moment (CIM - City Information Model). This
solution gives a quicker overview and enables prompt intervention.
