Professional Summary
Skills/Experiences January 2003-Present
ResearchScientist (Optimization);Olefin TetramerizationGroup, Sasol
Technology R&T; Sasolburg, South Africa.
I have been involved in the general management of the Sasol Continuous reactor to ensure excellent
data was generated and interpreted. I have held several positions which give me the experience and
technical know to control and manage a host of technical and ad hoc projects in my field of expertise.
The continuous reactor (CSTR) is used for research purpose to develop the Tetramerization process
which is currently being commercialized in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA. At the moment, I am leading
the polymerfoulingmitigationprojectwhichisaimat providingsolutiontothe foulingproblemwe have
inour Tetramerization plant. We are still busywiththe projectandhave achievedexcitingresultswhich
could help resolve the fouling problem in the plant. My job also involves trouble shooting while
conducting the experiments to identify sources of problem, understand the potential hazards and
resolve the issues to enable the plant to run without issues.
As part of the processof executingthe projects, I organize regular meetings, present my propose plan
programme fordiscussion, presentresultsandexplanations for observations and trends, proposed the
way forward. I lead and supervise the whole process, scheduled some of our colleagues including
technicians, scientist and engineers to assist in different shifts during the run. I prepare training
documentsandsafe workingprocedure andtrainsthose whoassistinconducting experiment using the
continuousreactor. Provide advice onthe desired purityof the solventrequiredforthe process. Provide
guidance inthe preparationof the startingmaterials toeliminate impurities by using different types of
Guard bedsand all the reagentsare preparedin an inertatmosphere in the Glove box. The solvent and
the otherreagentsare analyzedwithtechniquesuch as normal GC FID, GC X GC, GC MS, NMR etc. Some
of the ligands are purified using column chromatography. In determining the concentration of the
product made during the reaction, a known amount of internal standard are added to the sample
before analysis to help calculate the different product that are made. In all these, I ensure that the
analyses are conducted according to internationally accepted/established test methods.
The major products made during this process are 1-hexene and 1-octene used as co monomer in the
ethylene polymerization process.Itwasfoundthatinkillingthe reactionduringthe commercial process,
oxygenated compounds were introduced into the product stream which could interfere with the
polymerizationprocess. Hence, different method of catalyst kill were used and product samples were
collectedandanalyzedwithGCX GC andthe rightmethodof killingthe reactionwithoutintroducingthe
impuritieswasidentified. Atthe endof each project, a reports is written with recommendations based
on the outcome of the study and send to all stake holders within the department and beyond.

The list of other monomers used in different reactions include ethylene used to prepare phosphine
ligandsandalsointrimerization and tetramerization reactions to product 1-hexene and 1 - octene and
polyethylene as by-product. MFI, GPC are simple techniques used to analyses of polymer samples to
helpdeterminethe viscosityandmolecularweightof the difference types of polymer produced. I have
also used propylene, heptene, long chain olefin such as 1-decene, C11-C12 and C13-C14 olefins in the
hydroformylation process using syngas at elevated temperature and pressure to make the
corresponding alcohols. These long chain alcohols were purified using Short Path Distillation and the
relevantpure cutswere sentfordetergenttesting. These processesinvolve working with high pressure
autoclaves (working between 40 - 200 bar syngas pressure) at elevated temperatures, high pressure
infra-red (HP-IR). I also have experience working with liquid nitrogen, and Schlenk techniques (i.e.
working under vacuum and inert atmospheres).
I am well versed with activities such as Capex, opex budget planning. In the beginning of the financial
year, we normally make a list of the non consumables and consumable items that are needed in my
projectto helpdrawthe budget for the year. I have also been involved in purchasing non consumable
equipmentlike reactors, valves, massbalances, heatingbath anddifferentflowmeters all done through
capital applicationprocess(CAP).Ihave also been in charge of the chemical and solvent stores and the
reagents are all stores following standard procedures. The chemicals and solvent are replenished
through the SAP process or the operational expenditure (OPEX) process. In this process, I source
differentsupplierandmake recommendationto the buying department the best product based on the
specifications of the equipment and prize. I am aware of the audit procedures as our safety files and
procedure are audited at least twice every financial year.
In the beginning of every financial year, our performance agreement is drawn and sign between the
employee and the employer. Each key performance indicators (KPI) are drawn with specific goals that
are measurable, agreed upon, relevant to the overall goals of the group and the result should be
deliveredontime.Inthe middle andend of the year, interim and final assessments are conducted and
each employee is given a performance score (E (EXCELLENT), F(FULL), N (NEUTRAL), D(Developing)).
Throughout my stay at Sasol, I have either got FULL or EXCELLENT performances.
With regards to safety, our Labs are operated following a zero tolerance approached and it is my
responsibilitytoensure thatall employees working under me adhere to the safe working procedure as
stipulated in the information management system (IMS). To achieved this, we do regular inspection,
ensure ouremergencyresponseplanare upto date,do regularscenariostotest whetherthe procedure
are working as plan, ensure that written safe working procedures are in place and all employees are
followingthe procedure.HAZOPproceduresare followed, identified all hazards, do risk assessment for
all new experiments that should be conducted, make sure all employees use the prescribed personal
protective equipment (PPE). The following safety standards are adhered to during me service period.
ISO 9001- My experiencesinthisqualitymanagementsystemare asfollows:Methyl aluminoxane
(MMAO) isa co-catalystusedinthe ethylene tetramerizationprocess.Variabilityof the qualityof
thiscompoundwasobservedasthe performancesof certainbatcheswere bad.Several attempts
to analyze these batches of co-catalyst with proton and carbon 13 NMR using dueterated
benzene solventgave similarresultswithTMA peakpresentinthe mixture was overlapping with
that of MMAO. I develop a method in which dueterated THF was used and the TMA peak was
separated from that of MMAO. By using a standard solution containing xylene in
trimethylpentane, the concentration of TMA in the different MMAO sample were determined
and foundtobe higherinsamplesthat gave poor performance. Literature studies revealed that
3. 3
bothTMA and MMAO are scramblingforthe Cr center, hence withexcessTMA,the reactionwith
MMAO is hindered.
While performing reactions in the CSTR, our solvent used are from different sources and some
gave poor activity and high polyethylene by-product. These solvent and ethylene are Guard
beddedtoremove the impurities and oxygenates resulting in improve catalyst performance. In
this process we have about 5-7 reagents coming from different feed pots into the reactor for
catalysis.Wheneverwe identifythe trendisdeviating from expectations, I do trouble shoot and
identifythe source of the problem, fix it before proceeding with the programme otherwise the
results generated will not be valid.
In the process,we make 1-octene and1-hexene as our major products and these monomers are
used by our customer in co-polymerization of ethylene. To perform well in their process, the
productmust meetcertainspecifications. I have also been involved in trace chemistry analyses
using GCXGC with the help of the analytical group to identify possible trace elements in the
productsthat couldinterfere withthe polymerization process. Poison studies were also carried
out by spiking the catalytic mixture under inert atmosphere with compounds that could
potentiallykillthe tetramerizationprocess. Such compounds when identified must be removed
from any feed streams before catalysis.
ISO 14001- This is applicable to the handling, storage, and removal of hazardous, general and
industrial waste.InourLab.,all the waste productsare classifiedintodifferentgroupsdepending
to their properties. The different classes may include general, non hazardous, hazardous,
pyrophoric or poisonous compounds and are disposed of by specific standard procedures. I am
also responsible for the chemical and solvent stores. The chemicals/solvents are arranged
according to standard classification methods based on the different classes of the chemicals.
Theyare all colorcodedbasedon theirdifferent classesandwithineachclass, theyare arrange in
alphabetical ordertohelpin identification. An inventory list was made to track usage and place
order in time to avoid interfering with the experimental programme.
ISO 17025- To maintainhighquality of the data we generate on a regular basis and to save time
and money, regular checks and analysis are carried out on our instruments. For example, our
Bronkorstflowmeters,Badgerflowmeters, level control sensor, oxygen analyzers etc are sent to
the instrumentationdepartmentforcheckingandcalibrationtoensure that, they are working as
expected. I always track the trends of our product selectivities, polymer formation to identify
possible deviationandtake the appropriate steps to rectify the problem. High solid could mean
impurities are breaking through the guard beds. I keep track of the amount of solvent going
through the beds and re-activate the beds after regular intervals.
I am a good communicator with excellent interpersonal and multitasking skills used to coordinate
effectively within my group and other departments. In managing the continuous rig, I coordinate the
whole process thatincludesplanning, organizingregularmeetingswithall stake holders, ensure that all
the calculations of the reagents are done correctly, ensure that the right amount of reagents are
prepared andschedule some of our colleagues to assist in running the different shifts. Assign some of
my colleague workingwithme toprepare the system, bycleaningthe reactorfollowingthe safe working
procedure. Ensure that enough ethylene and all reagents are available for the run and the process is
conductedsafely, the datageneratedare interpreted correctly and reports with recommendations are
writtenanddistribute to all stake holders. Ensure that reagents are used optimally. I am enthusiastic,
highlymotivated hard/smart-worker with an eye for detail. Very analytical and able to perform under
pressure and independently without supervision. I am also teachable and open to learn new areas,
processes, equipments that I am not familiar with.

Quality Control Manager at Central Pharmacy, Nso, Cameroon
I am a professional person who has supervisory experience in managing the QC laboratory. Between
1996 -1999, I served as a quality control manager in the QC laboratory at Central Pharmacy, Nso
Cameroon. Some of myinitial responsibilitieswere toprepare bothsterile(infusionfluid, eyedropsetc.)
and non- sterile drugs.Icarriedout assayto determine the concentrationof reagentsindifferent drugs
and test the potency of different drugs using standard pharmaceutical procedure and gave
recommendations whether the drugs were potent or not. I sampled both raw materials and finished
products and analyzed by standard titration methods to validate the concentrations as specified.
Alsoduringthisperiod, a research was conducted and a procedure was designed to make a medicated
soap which currently being used in the CBC hospitals and health centers in Cameroon used for the
treatmentof certainbode rashes call “come no go” that was not responding to common antibiotics. At
thisstage,I had five employees working with me. Haven developed the procedure to make the soap; I
had to trainotherstaff memberstohelpmake the soapas the demandwashigh.Presently, a detergent
division of the pharmacy has evolved due to my invention and they are making soap, washing power
that serves all the Baptist hospital and health centers in Cameroon. Apart from soap making, I also
assignedthemtootherstudiessuchastreatmentof mosquitonets,cleaningthe bottlesforthe infusion
