3. Genesis 11:1-9 NIV
1 Now thewhole worldhad one languageand a
common speech.
2 As peoplemoved eastward,they found a plain
in Shinarand settled there.
3 They said to eachother,“Come, let’s make
bricksand bakethem thoroughly.” They used
brickinsteadof stone,and tar for mortar.
4. 4 Thenthey said, “Come,let us buildourselves a city,
with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that
we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we
willbe scattered over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the LORD came downto see the city and the
tower the peoplewere building.
6TheLORD said, “If as one peoplespeaking the same
languagethey have begunto do this, then nothing
they planto dowill beimpossiblefor them.
5. 7 Come, let us go downand confuse their language
so they will notunderstand each other.”
8 Sothe LORD scattered them from there over all the
earth, and they stoppedbuildingthe city.
9 That is why it was called Babelbecause there
the LORD confused the language of the whole
world. From there the LORD scattered them over
the face of the wholeearth.
14. They wanted the
tower to be a proud
monument to
themselves and a
symbol that would
keep them united as
powerful people.
However, God was
not pleased.
15. Bible scholars think the
tower of babel refers
to a ziggurat, the
ancient pagan temple
of the Babylonians.
Babylon was located
on the Euphrates
river about 30 miles
from the modern city
of Baghdad in Iraq.
16. Babel was a Hebrew
word name of
Babylon which
means “gate of
god.”
It is similar to the
Hebrew word balal
which means to
confound or
confuse.
17. I. Initiative (v. 3-4)
They saidto each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and
bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of
stone, and tar for mortar.
Then they said,“Come, let us buildourselves a city, witha
tower that reaches to the heavens,so that we may
make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be
scatteredover the face of the whole earth.”
18.
19. Then Isaid to them, “Yousee the trouble we are in:
Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been
burnedwith fire.Come, let us rebuildthe wall of
Jerusalem, and we will no longerbein
disgrace.” 18I also told them about the gracious
handof my God onmeand what the kinghad
said to me.
They replied,“Let us start rebuilding.”Sothey
began this goodwork.

22. II. Motives and Attitude (v. 4)
Thenthey said,“Come,letus buildourselvesa
city, with a tower that reachesto the
heavens,so that we may makea namefor
ourselves;otherwise we willbe
scatteredoverthe face of the whole earth.”
23. Thereforeif you haveany encouragementfrom being united
with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common
sharing in theSpirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
then makemy joy complete by beinglike-minded,having the
same love, being onein spirit and of one mind.
Do nothingout of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in
humilityvalue others above yourselves,
not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests
of the others.
In your relationships withone another, have thesame mindset
as Christ Jesus:
Philippians 2:1-5 NIV
30. It’s the unity of Elijah against the 450
prophets of Baal when there seemed to
be almost no one else serving the One
true God
31. It’s the unity of Shadrach, Meshach
and Abed-nego in replying to
Nebuchadnezzar, “We are not going to
serve your gods” when everyone else
did
32. And I have other sheep that are not of
this fold. I must bring them also, and
they will listen to my voice. So there
will be one flock, one shepherd.
John 10:16 NIV
33. Challenges
• Beware of charismatic leadership
that unifies the masses in
rebellion to God
• Unity begins by rejecting false
teaching, false doctrine and
embracing God’s truth
