Arthur Miller Analysis
The education system stresses that in order to be content, students must achieve a high GPA and attend a form of secondary education. Career
awareness is also taught as early as elementary school, with a purpose of promoting a "successful" American experience. The leaders of the United
States utilize this tactic because research affirms that "people who wonder about their future exhibit an especially healthy form of curiosity, one that
augurs greater well–being, or contentment, over time" (Scientific American Mind 1). However, not every member of society possesses this curiosity.
Thus, authors such as Arthur Miller depict characters with various contentment levels, and express the backgrounds of these characters in order to
convey a realistic, yet conveying story reflecting the American experience. Characters and Their Futures The education system stresses that in order to

Arthur Miller Essay Writing
Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other works may have been some of the most
electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in
the stock market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he
attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays,
screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the "AveryHopwood Award" for the first play he
wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by
being fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his stories. One example was The Crucible, this was
about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1). Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which
prevented him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was unnecessary (3).
One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for awards and best stories. His play Death of a
Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays to beat his works.

Arthur Miller Criticism
Arthur Miller is a highly distinguished author. He is considered by many to be one of America's greatest writers. As distinguished a writer he is, Miller
deserves to be selected for a spot in the prestigious American Author Hall of Fame. His works meet the criteria for the American Authors Hall of Fame
since they have themes important to society, are unique, and have universal appeal. Arthur Miller's works meet the American Author Hall of Fame's
first criteria by dealing with themes highly important to society. Some serious themes prevalent in his works were antisemitism and economic inequity
(Christenbury 187). Jewish himself, Miler had faced antisemitism first–hand. In the workforce, his bosses and coworkers often discriminated against

A second unique aspect about Death of a Salesman was its depiction of the American Dream. Within the play, it depicts the failure of the American
Dream (Moss and Wilson 111). Miller's The Crucible also is unique. The Crucible's plot is not what makes it unique; Instead, it is the symbolism within
The Crucible that differentiates it. Miller wrote The Crucible during a rather hostile time in history when innocent people were persecuted after being
accused of being communists. This metaphorical "witch–hunt", called the Red Scare, closely parallels the plot of The Crucible (Zeff, "Crucible, The").
The Crucible is about the Salem witch trials (Zeff, "Crucible, The"). Like the people accused of communism, those accused of witchcraft in Salem
often were accused with flimsy proof, if there was even proof at all (Christenbury 192). Going even farther into the Red Scare allegory, the man that
started the Red Scare, Joseph McCarthy, can be compared to The Crucible's Abigail, the girl who was the one who started accusing others of
witchcraft (Christenbury 192). Abigail's mindless accusations of people being witches quite obviously parallels McCarthy's accusations of people
being communists. Universal appeal, the third criteria for the American Author Hall of Fame, is met by Arthur Miller's works as well. A number of
Miller's works have universal appeal, but the most universal work of his is Death of a Salesman. Beloved by audiences,

Arthur Miller Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society's moral values and the characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A
good majority of these plays were very successful and earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times,
Miller's play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play "is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing
that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their
hopes and anguish to the theater" (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the

He "is one of society's victims, one of those "who landed in the ash can." As Miller explains it, society chews up Willy because he has broken "the
law which says a failure in society and in business has no right to live"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur Miller's Death of a
Salesman 96). In Howard's office Willy recalls the memory of whom he considered a great salesman, Dave Singleman. He was well liked and
popular with his buyers, even to his death. Hundreds of salesman and buyers were at his funeral. Willy wanted to be just like this man, but...all the
buyers he once knew are dead, and all the new age buyers care about is getting a deal over and done with. There's no personality in it anymore. He
can't pay his insurance... "In brief glimses, Willy recognizes that he is a victim. After he is fired, he complains to Charley, "After all the highways
and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur

Arther Miller
Come along as an adventure through time takes launch. From the interim of Arthur Miller's birth and death, he wrote some of America's greatest
plays which are known all around the world. This world renowned screenwriter and playwright is arguably considered the best playwright of the 20th
century. We start our journey here on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York where Miller was born. Arther Miller was the son of Isidore and
Augusta, a Polish and Jewish Immigrant family who owned a flourishing manufacturing business. The miller family got hit hard during the Wall Street
Crash of 1929 nearly losing everything. Arther Miller worked hard after he graduated high school, so he would be able to pay for his collage tuition at
the University of Michigan. It was at Michigan that he wrote his first play, No Villain. This play won him the school's Avery Hopwood Award and
sparked the beginning of his successful career as a playwright. The beginning of Miller's playwright career came out with a boom with, All My Sons,
which debuted on Broadway in 1947. This play won Miller his first of many Tony Awards. His next

Arthur Miller As A Dramatist
Arthur Miller(1915–2005) is regarded as one of the most important American playwrights of the 20th century and his work continues to be widely
performed and studied around the world. Miller has written near about 30 plays in his career as a dramatist. Among his most popular plays are All
My Sons, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, A view from the Bridge, and After the Fall. He won Pulitzer Prize for Death of a Salesman. Miller
was born in New York in 1915 to an immigrant family of Polish and Jewish descent. His father, Isidore, was a successful clothes business man and his
mother, Augusta, was an educator. But in the Wall Street Crash of 1929, his father lost everything. So the poor Arthur Miller had to do a few odd jobs

The play won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for the best play in 1947and with this Arthur Miller became a known and established
dramatist of the theatre. In fact this play launched Arthur Miller as a dramatist in the theatre. "All My Sons deserves a special play in the playwright's
canon because it constitutes his major theatrical achievement, displays his extra–ordinary skill in handling dramatic form, and presages even better
things yet to come from one of America's greatest dramatists". (Steven R.Centola, "All My Sons", in The Cambridge Companion to Arthur Miller,
(ed.), Christopher Bigsby, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1997.), p.51. The critical and commercial success of All My Sons proved to be
a turning point in the career of Arthur Miller because this established him as a dramatist in the theatre. After struggling for a long period to establish
himself as a dramatist, Arthur Miller was upset and there was a time when he had almost decided to quit writing plays and to shift over other career
for his livelihood. All My Sons was his last hope. Reflecting on his dissatisfaction with his achievement during the early phase of his career, Miller
describes the ultimatum he gave

Megan Jones English III AP DC Cy Woods Mr. Barckholtz December 2, 2012 Arthur Miller Research EssayArthur Miller was an American
playwright who wrote plays such as "The Crucible" and "Death of a Salesman" because he thought theatre could change the world. He wrote his
works based on friends, his own life, and family. People believed he was a man of integrity and a hero because of the ways he portrayed
himself. He was born in 1915 in Harlem, New York and raised in a very wealthy household by his parents, Isidore and Augusta Miller. After high

Arthur Miller wrote many plays in his time, but one in particular, written in 1947 and directed in Beijing in 1983, was the "play that established
him as a great American playwright" called "Death of a Salesman". This play was about the difference between a New York family's life in reality
and what they dreamed it would be. An old man, by the name of Willy valued popularity and his friends way more than skills or even a real
personality. His goal was to die a man that had all of these things, and he ends up killing himself in the end. Miller's goal was to "take the audience
on an internal journey through the mind, memories, fears, anxieties of his central character." "Death of A Salesman" has been very popular for
over a decade, performed internationally, and was even produced into movies (Kristofoletti). Many people remember this play because of how
inspiring it was, also because it did not compare to any other of the ones he had ever written.Arthur Miller's second best play was "The Crucible"
which premiered in 1953. This play was definitely harder for Miller to write. He took his time on this and wrote it in twelve months. It was a
reflection of the Salem Witch Trials that he read about during his time. He found his subject after reading "W. Upham's 1867 two–volume study of the
1692 Salem witch trials" and wrote it after "watching the filming of the new movie of 'The Crucible'". This novel was about the people of Salem, how
they felt, and what was

Essay about Arthur Miller
Theater Appreciation ARTHUR MILLER Of the list of American playwrights the one I thought I would find most interesting is Arthur Miller.
Being relatively familiar with some of his work I wanted to learn more about him. Through the research I have done I have been able to find some very
interesting information about Miller's work as well as his personal life. Arthur Miller was born in New York on October 17, 1915. His father, Isidore
Miller, was a ladies–wear manufacturer and shopkeeper whose business was ruined in the Great Depression. This obviously had a huge impact on the
family's financial situation which in turn had a strong influence on Miller. The family was forced to move to a small frame house in Brooklyn, which
is said...show more content...
Miller's work eventually made it to Broadway starting with The Man Who Had all the Luck in 1944. It closed after four performances. Three
years later he returned to Broadway producing All My Sons, the story of a factory owner who sells faulty aircraft parts during World War II. It
won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. This being his first major award, his work would continue to receive critical acclaim for years,
however there would still be ups and downs. Arthur Miller's work varied over the next several years. In 1944 Arthur toured Army camps to collect
background material for his screenplay The Story of GI Joe. Miller also wrote his first novel, Focus (1945), which was a story about anti–Semitism. In
1949 Miller's Death of a Salesman brought him international fame. This became probably one of his most well known pieces of work as well as a
major achievement of modern American theatre. Death of a Salesman is a story about the quest for the American Dream. The salesman, Willy
Loman, is a man of pride who is not the great success that he claims to be to his family and friends. Due to the postwar economic boom he looses his
job and goes into a downward spiral. He begins to hallucinate about significant events from his past and eventually he comes to the conclusion that he
is worth more dead than alive. Willy kills himself in his car, hoping that the insurance money will support his family

Arthur Miller Struggles
"In the theater, while you recognized that you were looking at a house, it was a house in quotation marks. On screen, the quotation marks tend to
be blotted out by the camera.". Arthur Miller was a person who wrote many plays and had his share of beliefs. He's gone through tough times. He
started writing plays in the 1940's, after graduating from the University of Michigan. He also began believing in what he wanted to believe. Who
was Arthur Miller? Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915, in New York City. His father's wealth was lost during the great depression and
that caused Arthur Miller to not be able to go to college. So Arthur Miller decided to get a job, he worked for 2 years and was able to pay for his
studies at the University of Michigan. He soon graduated from the university. At first, he didn't want to be a failure, he didn't want to lose anything like
his dad did during the great depression. Thanks to the U.S. Government's Federal Theatre Project, Arthur Miller began to learn and understand about
the craft of theater. "The theater is so endlessly...show more content...
Arthur Miller was a person who wrote many plays and had his share of beliefs. In my opinion everybody has struggles but we overcome it like
Arthur Miller. Some struggles come with hard decisions and hard decisions comes with hard consequences. "Maybe all one can do is hope to end
up with the right regrets" said Arthur Miller, he's right about that some people regret things but in a good way. "You specialize in something until
one day you find it is specializing in you" says Arthur Miller. That basically shows most of his life in just on very specific quote. It also changes all
of us because we all find something that we are good on and we make it our passion just like the theater was for Arthur Miller. Who knows maybe one
day another ARthur miller will be born with a love for the Theater just like this past Arthur

Arthur Miller As A Tragic Hero
Arthur Miller once said, "Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much like life." For years, a playwright's goal was to
make the stage a place to cultivate and create life as it is. The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote
plays "so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect. Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found
within the text, but they are intertwined with every character's objective and subtext. Arthur Miller is the best playwright, not only for molding a
character's chase for the American Dream, but he has written a revolutionary view on female characters, and has found the beauty in the tragic hero.
Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York. When he graduated from the University of Michigan, Arthur Miller went back east
and began his career in playwriting. After The Man Who Has All the Luck, hisplay with no success, Arthur Miller finally had a breakthrough with the
play, All My Sons. He continued to write Death of a Salesman, which got him his first Tony for "Best Play" and has won awards for "Best Revival on
the Broadway stage". Death of a Salesman shined a light on the American Dream as a false myth constructed around materialism. In addition to his
other plays, The Crucible became subject to government criticism because it supposedly was an allegory to McCarthyism. The government intervened,

Arthur Miller's Struggles
"The American Dream is the largely unacknowledged screen in front of which all American writing plays itself out," Arthur Miller has said (Galvin).
To many people Arthur Miller is known for his role against communist accusations and using his writing to portray what has happened during
McCarthyism. From Miller's struggles as a child to his first big break as a playwright to his fight against the government, he has still been able to
maintain integrity in his writing and captivated many audiences over the years. Growing up during the Great Depression, Miller and his family have
faced many hardships. His father was unable to hold a job during these years, but when Arthur was able to get a job, he did. He worked a variety of
jobs such as a truck

Intro
Death of a Salesman is a play written in 1949 by Arthur Miller, the man who would later go on to write the Crucible. Arthur Miller based the
character of Willy Loman off of his uncle, who was a traveling salesman and felt competitive with his own sons towards Arthur and his own brother.
After bumping into Arthur in Boston, Manny shortly committed suicide. In his life, Arthur had known three people who had committed suicide and
two of those were traveling salesman. Arthur was so passionate about this play that he had finished Act 1 in only one day, and Act 2 was finished six
weeks later ("Death of a Salesman: Study Guide."). This play, considered by many to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, has featured on

Miller's father owned a women's clothing company and during the Depression, he lost his business, and their family moved to Brooklyn. After high
school Miller worked at a bunch of different jobs in order to save money for college. He attended the University of Michigan and spent a
significant amount of those four years learning to write and creating plays and his first was called No Villain. In 1940, he married Mary Grace
Slattery and they had two children, Jane and Robert. After he received his degree, he joined the Federal Theater Project in New York City (Galvin).
His first Broadway play, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened in 1944 and was a failure, but his next play, All My Sons, was extremely
successful. Only two years after the success of All My Sons, Miller came out with his most famous and well–respected work, Death of a Salesman.
This play won him both a Pulitzer Prize and a Drama Critics Circle Award, and ran for more than 700 performances. Within a short while, it had been
translated into over a dozen languages and had made Miller a millionaire. Miller began work on his next major play, the Crucible. The Crucible was
set in Salem during the witch–hunts of the late 17th century, but was also based off of McCarthyism in the 1950s. After Miller divorced Slattery, he
married Marilyn Monroe in 1956. In 1956 and 1957, Miller was subpoenaed by the House Un–American Activities Committee and was convicted of
contempt of Congress for his refusal to identify writers believed to hold Communist sympathies. The following year, the United States Court of Appeals
overturned the conviction. A difficult time in his life, Miller ended hismarriage with actress Marilyn Monroe in 1960. Miller finally married
photographer Inge Morath in 1962, with whom he lives in Connecticut. He and Inge had first a daughter, Rebecca. Then they had a son, Daniel, who
was born with Down Syndrome and was

  • 1. Arthur Miller Analysis The education system stresses that in order to be content, students must achieve a high GPA and attend a form of secondary education. Career awareness is also taught as early as elementary school, with a purpose of promoting a "successful" American experience. The leaders of the United States utilize this tactic because research affirms that "people who wonder about their future exhibit an especially healthy form of curiosity, one that augurs greater well–being, or contentment, over time" (Scientific American Mind 1). However, not every member of society possesses this curiosity. Thus, authors such as Arthur Miller depict characters with various contentment levels, and express the backgrounds of these characters in order to convey a realistic, yet conveying story reflecting the American experience. • 2. Arthur Miller Essay Writing Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other works may have been some of the most electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in the stock market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays, screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the "AveryHopwood Award" for the first play he wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by being fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his stories. One example was The Crucible, this was about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1). Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which prevented him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was unnecessary (3). One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for awards and best stories. His play Death of a Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays to beat his works. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Arthur Miller Criticism Arthur Miller is a highly distinguished author. He is considered by many to be one of America's greatest writers. As distinguished a writer he is, Miller deserves to be selected for a spot in the prestigious American Author Hall of Fame. His works meet the criteria for the American Authors Hall of Fame since they have themes important to society, are unique, and have universal appeal. Arthur Miller's works meet the American Author Hall of Fame's first criteria by dealing with themes highly important to society. Some serious themes prevalent in his works were antisemitism and economic inequity (Christenbury 187). Jewish himself, Miler had faced antisemitism first–hand. In the workforce, his bosses and coworkers often discriminated against ...show more content... A second unique aspect about Death of a Salesman was its depiction of the American Dream. Within the play, it depicts the failure of the American Dream (Moss and Wilson 111). Miller's The Crucible also is unique. The Crucible's plot is not what makes it unique; Instead, it is the symbolism within The Crucible that differentiates it. Miller wrote The Crucible during a rather hostile time in history when innocent people were persecuted after being accused of being communists. This metaphorical "witch–hunt", called the Red Scare, closely parallels the plot of The Crucible (Zeff, "Crucible, The"). The Crucible is about the Salem witch trials (Zeff, "Crucible, The"). Like the people accused of communism, those accused of witchcraft in Salem often were accused with flimsy proof, if there was even proof at all (Christenbury 192). Going even farther into the Red Scare allegory, the man that started the Red Scare, Joseph McCarthy, can be compared to The Crucible's Abigail, the girl who was the one who started accusing others of witchcraft (Christenbury 192). Abigail's mindless accusations of people being witches quite obviously parallels McCarthy's accusations of people being communists. Universal appeal, the third criteria for the American Author Hall of Fame, is met by Arthur Miller's works as well. A number of Miller's works have universal appeal, but the most universal work of his is Death of a Salesman. Beloved by audiences, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Arthur Miller Essay Arthur Miller Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society's moral values and the characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A good majority of these plays were very successful and earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times, Miller's play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play "is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their hopes and anguish to the theater" (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the ...show more content... He "is one of society's victims, one of those "who landed in the ash can." As Miller explains it, society chews up Willy because he has broken "the law which says a failure in society and in business has no right to live"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman 96). In Howard's office Willy recalls the memory of whom he considered a great salesman, Dave Singleman. He was well liked and popular with his buyers, even to his death. Hundreds of salesman and buyers were at his funeral. Willy wanted to be just like this man, but...all the buyers he once knew are dead, and all the new age buyers care about is getting a deal over and done with. There's no personality in it anymore. He can't pay his insurance... "In brief glimses, Willy recognizes that he is a victim. After he is fired, he complains to Charley, "After all the highways and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman 96). And his boss doesn't even care. During the scene in his office he is preoccupied with his "new toy" a wire recorder. As Willy's life falls apart, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The play won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for the best play in 1947and with this Arthur Miller became a known and established dramatist of the theatre. In fact this play launched Arthur Miller as a dramatist in the theatre. "All My Sons deserves a special play in the playwright's canon because it constitutes his major theatrical achievement, displays his extra–ordinary skill in handling dramatic form, and presages even better things yet to come from one of America's greatest dramatists". (Steven R.Centola, "All My Sons", in The Cambridge Companion to Arthur Miller, (ed.), Christopher Bigsby, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1997.), p.51. The critical and commercial success of All My Sons proved to be a turning point in the career of Arthur Miller because this established him as a dramatist in the theatre. After struggling for a long period to establish himself as a dramatist, Arthur Miller was upset and there was a time when he had almost decided to quit writing plays and to shift over other career for his livelihood. All My Sons was his last hope. Reflecting on his dissatisfaction with his achievement during the early phase of his career, Miller describes the ultimatum he gave Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Arthur Miller Research Essay Megan Jones English III AP DC Cy Woods Mr. Barckholtz December 2, 2012 Arthur Miller Research EssayArthur Miller was an American playwright who wrote plays such as "The Crucible" and "Death of a Salesman" because he thought theatre could change the world. He wrote his works based on friends, his own life, and family. People believed he was a man of integrity and a hero because of the ways he portrayed himself. He was born in 1915 in Harlem, New York and raised in a very wealthy household by his parents, Isidore and Augusta Miller. Arthur Miller wrote many plays in his time, but one in particular, written in 1947 and directed in Beijing in 1983, was the "play that established him as a great American playwright" called "Death of a Salesman". This play was about the difference between a New York family's life in reality and what they dreamed it would be. An old man, by the name of Willy valued popularity and his friends way more than skills or even a real personality. His goal was to die a man that had all of these things, and he ends up killing himself in the end. Miller's goal was to "take the audience on an internal journey through the mind, memories, fears, anxieties of his central character." "Death of A Salesman" has been very popular for over a decade, performed internationally, and was even produced into movies (Kristofoletti). Many people remember this play because of how inspiring it was, also because it did not compare to any other of the ones he had ever written.Arthur Miller's second best play was "The Crucible" which premiered in 1953. This play was definitely harder for Miller to write. He took his time on this and wrote it in twelve months. It was a reflection of the Salem Witch Trials that he read about during his time. He found his subject after reading "W. Upham's 1867 two–volume study of the 1692 Salem witch trials" and wrote it after "watching the filming of the new movie of 'The Crucible'". • 8. Essay about Arthur Miller Theater Appreciation ARTHUR MILLER Of the list of American playwrights the one I thought I would find most interesting is Arthur Miller. Being relatively familiar with some of his work I wanted to learn more about him. Through the research I have done I have been able to find some very interesting information about Miller's work as well as his personal life. Arthur Miller was born in New York on October 17, 1915. His father, Isidore Miller, was a ladies–wear manufacturer and shopkeeper whose business was ruined in the Great Depression. This obviously had a huge impact on the family's financial situation which in turn had a strong influence on Miller. The family was forced to move to a small frame house in Brooklyn, which is said...show more content... Miller's work eventually made it to Broadway starting with The Man Who Had all the Luck in 1944. It closed after four performances. Three years later he returned to Broadway producing All My Sons, the story of a factory owner who sells faulty aircraft parts during World War II. It won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. This being his first major award, his work would continue to receive critical acclaim for years, however there would still be ups and downs. Arthur Miller's work varied over the next several years. In 1944 Arthur toured Army camps to collect background material for his screenplay The Story of GI Joe. Miller also wrote his first novel, Focus (1945), which was a story about anti–Semitism. In 1949 Miller's Death of a Salesman brought him international fame. This became probably one of his most well known pieces of work as well as a major achievement of modern American theatre. Death of a Salesman is a story about the quest for the American Dream. The salesman, Willy Loman, is a man of pride who is not the great success that he claims to be to his family and friends. Due to the postwar economic boom he looses his job and goes into a downward spiral. He begins to hallucinate about significant events from his past and eventually he comes to the conclusion that he is worth more dead than alive. Willy kills himself in his car, hoping that the insurance money will support his family Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Arthur Miller Struggles "In the theater, while you recognized that you were looking at a house, it was a house in quotation marks. On screen, the quotation marks tend to be blotted out by the camera.". Arthur Miller was a person who wrote many plays and had his share of beliefs. He's gone through tough times. He started writing plays in the 1940's, after graduating from the University of Michigan. He also began believing in what he wanted to believe. Who was Arthur Miller? Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915, in New York City. His father's wealth was lost during the great depression and that caused Arthur Miller to not be able to go to college. So Arthur Miller decided to get a job, he worked for 2 years and was able to pay for his studies at the University of Michigan. He soon graduated from the university. At first, he didn't want to be a failure, he didn't want to lose anything like his dad did during the great depression. Thanks to the U.S. Government's Federal Theatre Project, Arthur Miller began to learn and understand about the craft of theater. "The theater is so endlessly...show more content... "You specialize in something until one day you find it is specializing in you" says Arthur Miller. That basically shows most of his life in just on very specific quote. • 10. Arthur Miller As A Tragic Hero Arthur Miller once said, "Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much like life." For years, a playwright's goal was to make the stage a place to cultivate and create life as it is. The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote plays "so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect. Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found within the text, but they are intertwined with every character's objective and subtext. Arthur Miller is the best playwright, not only for molding a character's chase for the American Dream, but he has written a revolutionary view on female characters, and has found the beauty in the tragic hero. Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York. When he graduated from the University of Michigan, Arthur Miller went back east and began his career in playwriting. After The Man Who Has All the Luck, hisplay with no success, Arthur Miller finally had a breakthrough with the play, All My Sons. He continued to write Death of a Salesman, which got him his first Tony for "Best Play" and has won awards for "Best Revival on the Broadway stage". Death of a Salesman shined a light on the American Dream as a false myth constructed around materialism. In addition to his other plays, The Crucible became subject to government criticism because it supposedly was an allegory to McCarthyism. The government intervened, however Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Arthur Miller's Struggles "The American Dream is the largely unacknowledged screen in front of which all American writing plays itself out," Arthur Miller has said (Galvin). To many people Arthur Miller is known for his role against communist accusations and using his writing to portray what has happened during McCarthyism. From Miller's struggles as a child to his first big break as a playwright to his fight against the government, he has still been able to maintain integrity in his writing and captivated many audiences over the years. Growing up during the Great Depression, Miller and his family have faced many hardships. His father was unable to hold a job during these years, but when Arthur was able to get a job, he did. • 12. Arthur Miller Intro Death of a Salesman is a play written in 1949 by Arthur Miller, the man who would later go on to write the Crucible. Arthur Miller based the character of Willy Loman off of his uncle, who was a traveling salesman and felt competitive with his own sons towards Arthur and his own brother. After bumping into Arthur in Boston, Manny shortly committed suicide. In his life, Arthur had known three people who had committed suicide and two of those were traveling salesman. Arthur was so passionate about this play that he had finished Act 1 in only one day, and Act 2 was finished six weeks later ("Death of a Salesman: Study Guide."). Miller's father owned a women's clothing company and during the Depression, he lost his business, and their family moved to Brooklyn. After high school Miller worked at a bunch of different jobs in order to save money for college. He attended the University of Michigan and spent a significant amount of those four years learning to write and creating plays and his first was called No Villain. In 1940, he married Mary Grace Slattery and they had two children, Jane and Robert. After he received his degree, he joined the Federal Theater Project in New York City (Galvin). His first Broadway play, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened in 1944 and was a failure, but his next play, All My Sons, was extremely successful. Only two years after the success of All My Sons, Miller came out with his most famous and well–respected work, Death of a Salesman. This play won him both a Pulitzer Prize and a Drama Critics Circle Award, and ran for more than 700 performances. Within a short while, it had been translated into over a dozen languages and had made Miller a millionaire. Miller began work on his next major play, the Crucible. The Crucible was set in Salem during the witch–hunts of the late 17th century, but was also based off of McCarthyism in the 1950s. After Miller divorced Slattery, he married Marilyn Monroe in 1956. In 1956 and 1957, Miller was subpoenaed by the House Un–American Activities Committee and was convicted of contempt of Congress for his refusal to identify writers believed to hold Communist sympathies. The following year, the United States Court of Appeals overturned the conviction. A difficult time in his life, Miller ended hismarriage with actress Marilyn Monroe in 1960. Miller finally married photographer Inge Morath in 1962, with whom he lives in Connecticut. He and Inge had first a daughter, Rebecca.
