Science: Our Solar System
2. SCIENCE STANDARD
• Science 2 (11.) Identify basic components of our solar system,
including the sun, planets, and Earth's moon.
3. OBJECTIVES FOR PROJECT:
• After this project, students will be able to name and recognize elements of
our solar system including Earth, Sun, Earth’s moon, and all planets.
• Students will communicate and collaborate in groups to research information,
recreate our solar system, then present their information to the rest of the
class.
4. PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
• Our classroom uses projects to learn and explore topics
throughout the school year. Project-based learning is an
approach where students learn through collaborating with their
peers to create projects that can last from a few days or the
entire semester .
5. Essential question:
Why do we need our solar system?
Unit questions:
What would happen if we had no Sun?
What would happen if we had no moon?
Content questions:
What are the components of our Solar Sytem?
How many planets are there?
What do the planets rotate around
6. STUDENT’S ROLE:
• Each student will be placed in a group with
three to four peers.
• Together, they will research information about
our Solar Sytem, including Earth, the planets,
Earth’s moon, and the Sun.
• Once they have found enough information,
they will recreate each element of our Solar
System using whatever materials the group
prefers.
• For the final presentation, each group will
present their solar systems with information
they found about each element of our solar
system.
7. PARENT’S ROLE:
Parents will assist students with
researching information and finding
materials for the project.
