Rather than trying to play catch up at the end of the
year, it’s best to stay in the know throughout the year.
Payroll and HR experts suggest paying attention to vendor
communication, getting involved with industry trade
associations and putting a quarterly reminder on your
calendar to visit important websites such as the DOL,
OSHA, IRS and SSA in order to stay abreast of changing
and/or new regulations.
4. Managing
Whether you’re a manufacturer managing a steel
production process or nonprofit organization overseeing a
capital campaign’s progress, efficient workflow is critical
to your success; without it you’re likely to fail. Manual and
paper processes, on which many organizations still rely, do
not lend themselves to this efficiency.
Be sure to review how your current workflows and
approvals are functioning on a biannual basis. Look at
how you can improve and streamline the processes.
Make sure you are utilizing the workflows that make
the most sense for your organization. Finally, consider
partnering with an HRIS technology provider that
offers an electronic workflow management system that
manages a multitude of benefits, HR, payroll and other
business processes all in one place.
Summary
Most HR processing tips, including these four, simply
require attention to detail and strategic planning. As with
most things in business, taking a proactive approach gives
you the best chance for efficiency and success.

management will address payroll, HR and benefits together,

hile a trouble-free 2018 should have started as
soon as you made your New Year’s resolution,
it’s not too late! With just about six months left in
the year, you still have time to get on the right track. Our
payroll and HR experts identified these four HR processing
tips for a successful year.
1. Preparing
Did you know the number one reason for amended
return needs is due to employees set up with an incorrect
Social Security Number? While it may seem like a tedious
task, cleaning up your records can have a big impact – not
only in terms of ensuring accuracy and timeliness but in
preventing your headaches down the line.
Don’t forget to review employee wage, tax and
withholding information (such as W-4s), ensure proper
withholdings have been made for taxable benefits such
as bonuses, sick pay, time off, etc., and begin preparing
tax forms such as Form 940, Employer’s Annual Federal
Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return.
2. Reporting
In the craze of year end, it can be easy to overlook some
benefits and earnings that must be included. Be sure all
noncash and cash income has been recorded and taxed
properly so it is reported on the W-2 and the quarterly 941
tax return.
Additionally, if your company issued 250 or more W-2s
in the prior year, then under the Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act (PPACA), your company is required to
report the aggregate cost for applicable employer-sponsored
health coverage on an employee’s W-2.
3. Complying
There always seems to be looming stress about
compliance. And you’re rightfully concerned as failing to
keep up with changing rules and regulations can have
serious consequences, ranging from fines and penalties to
improperly calculated overtime and incorrect payments.

With just about six months left in the year, you still have time to get on the right track. Our payroll and HR experts identified these four HR processing tips for a successful year. 1. Preparing Did you know the number one reason for amended return needs is due to employees set up with an incorrect Social Security Number? While it may seem like a tedious task, cleaning up your records can have a big impact – not only in terms of ensuring accuracy and timeliness but in preventing your headaches down the line. Don’t forget to review employee wage, tax and withholding information (such as W-4s), ensure proper withholdings have been made for taxable benefits such as bonuses, sick pay, time off, etc., and begin preparing tax forms such as Form 940, Employer’s Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return. 2. Reporting In the craze of year end, it can be easy to overlook some benefits and earnings that must be included. Be sure all noncash and cash income has been recorded and taxed properly so it is reported on the W-2 and the quarterly 941 tax return. Additionally, if your company issued 250 or more W-2s in the prior year, then under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), your company is required to report the aggregate cost for applicable employer-sponsored health coverage on an employee’s W-2. 3. Complying There always seems to be looming stress about compliance.
