18. What we learned (Production)
• Think through the entire process
• Learn everything you can about the system
before you begin
– What can it do
• What do you want to use
• Divide up the duties
– System lends itself well to that – different people
can have different roles
• Heavily promote it so your users know where
to find the journal
7/2/2014 Webinar on OJS, Toni Greider Presenter
19. What we learned (User)
• Let the user know about the advantages of
the system
– RSS Feeds
– Reading tools (if configured)

• Set up and maintenance costs
– Hosted solution
• Platform fee (reasonable)

21. Final Words of Wisdom
• Producing a quality journal is not
inexpensive
• IAALD

– Volunteers for Editing
– Outsources layout and proofreading
• A quality journal demands both quality
editing and production

Notes de l'éditeur
IAALD uses the fee option at the lowest price for a platform fee
OJS Provides:
A homepage that can be customized
Total production system from submission to publication
Local administrative functions
Open or closed access
Can do by individual articles
Manage subscribers
Allows payment through the website
Allows for the division of labor
Site administratior
Responsible for the overall administration of OJS
Journal Manager
Manages the journal formatting and the users
First three activities remain the same as do the costs
Mailing costs are replaced with the cost of maintaining the platform
In IAALD’s case, we reduced our distribution costs by 50%
Not an easy transition
Did not understand the system
Learned by trial and error
Began with v. 3, 2010
Began in the middle of the process
Used the system just to replace the distribution
Did not use it to its potential
Did not know the potential
Had to set myself up in all user roles to make the system work
Would have to keep track of the function to know what I had permission to do
Smooth sailing – almost!
Learned more about the system as you can see from the QB contents
