Growing Up WIRED! What Our Students Learn About Each Other from the Media Mary Pat Gallagher and Marteana Davidson It is estimated that today's teenagers (13-18) engage in nine hours of entertainment media per day and that tweens (8-12) engage in six hours. Today’s students are spending as much time learning from their media experiences as they do in their classrooms. What do our students learn about "each other" while playing video games, browsing the web, and engaged in social media? Schools, peers, and the media can impact a child's development. In schools, teachers play a role in encouraging academic success and student involvement. The characteristics of the school itself also can influence student involvement. For example, larger schools increase the sense of anonymity in students, and teachers are often hard-pressed to provide individualized instruction. Peers aid in socialization, often through the act of play. Even young children begin to prefer to play with other children rather than play by themselves or with adults. Children often model their behaviors based on their peers. Peers can reinforce behaviors (which may be desirable or undesirable by caregivers or teachers), encourage socially appropriate behavior and attitudes, establish age-related values, and help children learn how to interact with others. Although television and electronic media impact a child's development, keep in mind that they only provide the medium for delivery of the message. The medium itself is neither inherently good nor bad. However, the harmful effects of television content (e.g., violence can increase aggressive behavior in viewers; stereotyped portrayals of ethnic and minority groups can leave viewers with inaccurate beliefs about these groups) are more readily recalled than the beneficial influences of some content (e.g., programs such as Sesame Street teach basic cognitive and pro-social skills to their young viewers). Users that support eating disorder or sites that support suicide can find support and acceptance that they have not found through other means. These online groups may provide support; they pose a risk to the public by encouraging weak individuals to harm themselves. There is evidence that social media can influence suicide behavior. The Internet removes geographic barriers to communication between people, the creation of pro-suicide social media sites creates a new risk to vulnerable people who might not have been exposed to these imminent hazards. The developing data regarding the influence of the Internet and social media on suicide behavior have states that these forms of technology may introduce different threats to the public including new opportunities for assistance and prevention. It has taught me that the term "literacy" generally represents reading and writing skills. There is a variety in common with media literacy and reading literacy. Reading begins with letter recognition. Soon readers will recognize terms — and, above all, grasp what these words say. Authors and readers gain better reading abilities with further exposure. I have learned that media literacy recognizes and draws upon the constructive, innovative, and enjoyable aspects of mainstream culture. It syndicates strategic media thinking and media texts to help us manage a highly dynamic media world. This world involves conventional and new media and common cultural texts like theme parks, shopping centers, apparel, fads, and toys (Bulger, 2018). Teachers should not need to be professionals in the school's media, and it's just about answering questions. I became more media literate by understanding that literacy in the media cannot be constrained. An individual can never be culturally and informed enough to take all signals from the media. In the field of media literacy, there is still room for change. The maturity of the individual reading the messages depends on media literacy. Those with a less developed view of messages consider both commercials, TV shows, and films positively without assessing the content of each of the media's messages (Bulger, 2018). But those that are more able to process communications evaluate them differently. I also learned that I need to filter my sources to evade becoming a target of disinformation this can be achieved by getting to know the credibility and authenticity of the source. After studying this research topic, I understood that media literacy inspires young people to challenge, test, understand, and respect their visual community. It imparts customers and viewers to become fully involved in the media. The media education field is introduced into the school, bringing promptness and importance to conventional issues. It is a great bridge for the convergence of topics and interdisciplinary research. Media education embraces and fosters a current education that stresses student-centered education, acknowledging various intelligence bits and – rather than merely storage – the study and management of content (Bulger, 2018). The Media curriculum is focused on a sound pedagogical approach to learning in which children are situated. Should Children Be Allowed to Use Phones and Social Media? What happens when a dry sponge meets water? It will absorb as much water as possible. Sometimes, one could compare children with a sponge because of their tendency to imitate the behavior of people around them or get information from the internet and incorporate what they see into their lives. Due to the rapid development of the technological age, information on social media and the internet is diverse. Over the years, there has been a significant increase in the number of children using mobile phones and social media. The data given by Jacqueline Howard in the article “What's the Age When Kids Start Social Media?” reflects the large number of children who own mobile phones and use social media: The report showed that approximately 56% of the children had their own social media accounts, based on the parents’ survey responses. Among those children, the parents reported that the average age when initially signing up for the account was 12.6 years” (Howard). Considering these facts, parents have a reason to start worrying about their children's use of technology and social media. The topic of whether or not children should use mobile phones and social media has not only attracted the attention of many parents and experts, but also generated diverse opinions. On the one hand, proponents believe that children need to use social media to enable them learn basic social and technical skills, to make friends with people around the world more easily, and to learn from their peers online. On the other hand, opponents believe that it would have a bad effect on children's mental health. In some instances, cases such as cyber bullying could occur in children may not know how to respond to such issues. In extreme cases, increase use of phones and social could affect some children to an extent that they find it challenging to communicate well in real life. While there are a number of pros and cons associated with using mobile phones and social media, parental guidance is an appropriate strategy to address the cons. Those who agree that children can use mobile phones and social media defend their position on the basis that children can easily understand the latest technology and learn basic social skills. In addition, the internet can broaden their horizons, help the children know current affairs, and provide them with an opportunity to obtain all sorts of newest knowledge and information. In later life, these children can engage in individual research. Using the Internet, children also get a chance to enrich their minds and acquire knowledge that schoolteachers are not in a position to offer. In addition, they can use social media to communicate with others. Some children lack confidence and dare not talk and communicate with the outside world.
