Fisheries sector in Bangladesh represents as one of the most productive and dynamic sectors in the country. This sector plays a significant role in food security, employment, and foreign exchange earnings in the economy. At present agricultural transformation is taking place in Bangladesh. With the changes of farming system, farmers have started to shift their crop land to aquaculture as they considered it more profitable compared to rice production. The production of inland fisheries represents an increasing trend since 1989-90 with a growth rate of around 5-7%. Similarly, marine fisheries have also shown an increasing trend while a fluctuated growth rate has emerged in this sub sector. The fisheries sector in the 21st century is facing the challenges of food security for the increasing population, habitat degradation, urbanization, and industrial development. Development of responsible fisheries management and optimal use of water bodies can address those challenges. Since fishery is a productive growth sector in Bangladesh, it has high potential to contribute in the socioeconomic development of the country.

The integration of fish and vegetables creates an ideal growing environment that is more productive than conventional methods. Consequently, aquaponics is gaining more importance now a day because crop production systems are being forced towards increasing irregularities as drought, floods, storms, cyclones and diseases visit regularly. A simple aquaponic system was designed with the locally available materials.13 pants of 5 different species were grown in an area of 0.27 m2 ( Rashmi M et. al 2013). Three different methods were tested to determine the best system to grow Taro vegetable. The applied methods were T1 = aquaponics system for soilless vegetable culture in gravel bed with fish tank waste water, T2= hydroponics for soilless vegetable culture in gravel bed with tap water and T3= vegetable culture in soil media with tap water as control. Double recirculating aquaponic system (DRAPS) consisting of two independent recirculating units – a recirculating aquaculture unit for fish production and a closed hydroponic cycle for plant production which were connected unidirectional was developed (Suhl J et al 2016). Results revealed that aquaponic system offers better results than other media. This system can enhance the organic farming which could be environmental friendly. Double recirculating aquaponic system (DRAPS) with two independent cycles provides the opportunity to produce equal tomato yields compared to those obtained by conventionally used hydroponic systems. By Using DRAPS fertilizer use efficiency was also improved by 23.6%.

Aquaponics - Combined Fish and Vegetable Farming

Fish farming is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture. Fish farming involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. Worldwide, the most important fish species used in fish farming are carp, salmon, tilapia and catfish. There is an increasing demand for fish and fish protein, which has resulted in widespread overfishing in wild fisheries. Fish farming offers fish marketers another source. However, farming carnivorous fish, such as salmon, does not always reduce pressure on wild fisheries, since carnivorous farmed fish are usually fed fishmeal and fish oil extracted from wild forage fish. The global returns for fish farming recorded by the FAO in 2008 totalled 33.8 million tonnes worth about $US 60 billion. Specific types of fish farms[edit source | editbeta] Within intensive and extensive aquaculture methods, there are numerous specific types of fish farms; each has benefits and applications unique to its design. Cage system[edit source | editbeta] Giant gourami is often raised in cages in central Thailand Fish cages are placed in lakes, bayous, ponds, rivers or oceans to contain and protect fish until they can be harvested. The method is also called "off-shore cultivation[7] " when the cages are placed in the sea. They can be constructed of a wide variety of components. Fish are stocked in cages, artificially fed, and harvested when they reach market size. A few advantages of fish farming with cages are that many types of waters can be used (rivers, lakes, filled quarries, etc.), many types of fish can be raised, and fish farming can co-exist with sport fishing and other water uses. Cage farming of fishes in open seas is also gaining popularity. Concerns of disease, poaching, poor water quality, etc., lead some to believe that in general, pond systems are easier to manage and simpler to start. Also, past occurrences of cage-failures leading to escapes, have raised concern regarding the culture of non-native fish species in open-water cages. Even though the cage-industry has made numerous technological advances in cage construction in recent years, the concern for escapes remains valid. Main article: Copper alloys in aquaculture Recently, copper alloys have become important netting materials in aquaculture. Copper alloys are antimicrobial, that is, they destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and other microbes. In the marine environment, the antimicrobial/algaecidal properties of copper alloys prevent biofouling, which can briefly be described as the undesirable accumulation, adhesion, and growth of microorganisms, plants, algae, tube worms, barnacles, mollusks, and other organisms. Over 60 million people depend on fish from the Mekong and its tributaries for protein, and many engage in small-scale subsistence or commercial fishing. Accessible information on small-scale Mekong fisheries is essential to developing better estimates of the scope and scale of inland fisheries and understanding their contribution to the economy and food security. FISHBIO has been developing a participatory standard fish sampling program as part of a larger effort by several organizations to form a Mekong Fish Network among several organizations. The objective of the program is the regular, long-term collection of basic fishery-dependent data following robust, standardized methods, which will provide information on status and trends of Mekong fishes. Using participatory methods also engages local in data collection and enhances their capacity to enact conservation and sustainable fisheries co-management. Information generated from this monitoring will inform resource management through village-level regulations. In 2013, FISHBIO piloted the proposed sampling protocols in two villages of Lao People’s Democratic Republic in a district where there are no existing government programs to study wild capture fisheries. Local fishers were trained to record basic data on their catch each day they spent fishing, such as species name, fish length, total biomass, gear type and fishing effort. Fishers caught more than 54 species in the three-month period, including two species of commercially valuable fish listed as “endangered” on the IUCN Red List, Probarbus jullieni and Probarbus labeamajor. We are currently evaluating the survey protocols to explore their application to other settings in the Mekong Basin
