Enabling Access to Mental Health in Congo through Telepsychiatry
The mission of Uvira Telepsychiatry Room is using emerging technology to help reach
underserved populations in east Congo who lack access to psychiatric care via interactive
videoconferencing without having to worry about travel burdens and visa applications. "While no technology
will ever take the place of personal interaction, telepsychiatry has proven effective as a medium for
clinical evaluation and care where onsite resources are limited by time, distance, and financial constraints." http://

2. Telepsychiatry Service
The goal of this telepsychiatry services is to eliminate geographic and economic barriers
that stand in the way of receiving mental health care in territory of Uvira. Psychiatry is
currenlty nonexistent in this part of the country. The majority of people still believe that
mental illness is manifestation of past transgressions or evil. Telepsychiatry service will
serve a vital role by removing structural and cultural barriers encountered by people
suffering from mental health conditions in territory of Uvira
