1. Evaluation3 - What kindof mediainstitutionmightdistributeyourmediaproductandwhy?
The aim of the distribution company is to get films to cinemas/ art houses for people to see.
In addition to this, they also get films onto DVDs and iTunes etc. for people to watch.
Without them, we would not see the film as often because the distributors are responsible
for when and where the filmis shown on TV. For example, if there is a horror film, the
distributor would not show it on a child's TV channel. The big 6 distribution companies that
most people know are: Warner Brothers, Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney
Pictures, Sony Pictures and Paramount Pictures. These are shown prior to the filmstarting
and normally distribute the more successful films (usually ones with a larger budget).
However, they don’t just distribute the films but they also create and distribute the
merchandise for the public to buy if they wish. This is another way how the filmcan create
more money if they have a larger budget. On the other hand, there are also independent
distributors that usually focus on particular genres or audiences as they are seen as niche.
For example, there are certain distributors that only do war films or comedy films so the
audiences will know that these films are of a certain genre already. They normally release
these films to art houses or cinemas that only show prestigious films. The downside to this is
that the profit that the filmgets will be a lot lower that is if they make any in the first place.
Due to the fact that we are creating a film that has a mainstream audience (as we are
creating a crime/drama film). As a cause of this fact, we have decided that it would better
that we went for a larger distribution company rather than going for a smaller distribution
company as the film would appeal to a large audience and not as many people would watch
the film if we went with an independent one. For this reason, we decided that if we were
going to use a real-life filmdistributor that we would use Warner Bros. as they have
distributed films such as Goodfellas (1990) and Once upon a time in America (17 Feb1984)
which are films that we want to follow in the sense that we based our film opening around
them. This would be a good distribution company to go with as Goodfellas made a profit of
$25 million and One upon a time in America $30 million which are very respectable amount
of money considering the time that the filmwas made.
We would want our film to go into a multiplex cinema as this would not only create more
revenue but also generate a lot of viewers due to the fact that the film is meant to be
targeted towards a mainstream audience as around 50% of people would watch our genre.
If we were to release the filmin an art house/cinema, it would mean less people from our
target audience would see the film and a decrease in both viewers and money would be
almost definite. Due to the fact that our audience is 35+ from both genders means that we
need to try and get the filmto the most ‘populated’ cinemas to try and attract more of our
target audience.
When it comes to advertising, we have to ensure that it attracts the target audience more
than any other demographic as this is who we want watching our film. Due to the fact that
our target audience are 35+ for both genders so the way we advertise will be very different
to that of a younger audience as the strategy there would be to integrate ads into the social
media as stereotypically that is where they spend the most amount of time. With this
mindset, we have to think of what the people in this age group do the most and try and
integrate our advertising in with this so they see it. My first idea on how we will spread the
2. word of our film is to put a poster up on billboards as they are more likely to see this around
the town/city or near the road. We could also put the on the screens in Piccadilly Circus as a
lot of people walk past the screens every day and they will be of the age that we are looking
for which would increase our chances of people wanting to watch the film. The newspaper
would also a good way of advertising our filmas stereotypically, people that older read the
newspaper and they have lived through the time period that our film has been set in.
