• A method for estimating the maturity of
technologies during the acquisition phase of a
program, developed at NASA during the 1970s.
• The use of TRLs enables consistent, uniform
discussions of technical maturity across different
types of technology.
• Is it useful for Healthcare innovations?
57. Healthcare Innovation Maturity Level (IML)
• CIMIT created the Healthcare Innovation Cycle, based on TRL framework
• 20+ years of experience in facilitating more than 800 projects
• EIT Health has used CIMIT’s framework in Innovation Projects & Wild Card

95. CONCLUSIONS
•Regulatory frameworks should be taken into consideration at
the very beginning of a computational science project for
clinical and pharmaceutical applications
•Huge investment on documentation and validation is
required to achieve marketable software
•A trade-off between scientific production and software
documentation & testing is a must:
•Focus on IEC 61304, give the rest to the commectial company when active is
transferred
•Design scientific studies to generate evidencies for validation of the software
96. NEEDS
•Institutions may support their researchers with:
•Budget to contract technicians for documenting scientific software
•Budget to conduct validation processess of their actives
•Budget to hire consultants on regulatory frameworks to help on getting the CE Mark
•Provide direct technical contact to the notified bodies: EMA, FDA
•Include this is a 10-years strategy for promoting medical software development and
transfer (and fund it)
•Adapt to specific regulations for Artificial Intelligence
•European Regulatory Framework for AI
•AI and ML in Medical Devices white paper by FDA
