WHAT IS METACOGNITION?
★ Metacognition refers to “thinking
about thinking”
★ Metacognition is the knowledge you
have of your own cognitive
processes (your thinking).
★ It is your ability to control your
thinking processes through various
strategies, such as organizing,
monitoring, and adapting.
★ It is your ability to reflect upon the
tasks or processes you undertake
★ It is your ability to select and utilise
the appropriate strategies

METACOGNITIVE ENVIRONMENT
★ Allowing learners to talk about what
they are doing and giving them an
opportunity to share ideas with others
facilitates growth.
★ A learning environment that provides a
culture encouraging mistakes and
revisions also supports metacognition.
★ Through revisions and multiple
attempts, young learners start collecting
related information and noticing they are
doing so.
★ They also become more aware of their
memory.
AWARENESS OF KNOWLEDGE
AWARENESS OF KNOWLEDGE
★ Prior to understanding that they are thinking,
learners need to become aware that they possess
knowledge.
★ As a teacher you can help demonstrate their
knowledge by pointing it out:
★ "You knew just where to find the matching card," or
by asking questions: "Do you know how many more
need to be added so we have five trucks." During
reading, ask questions about content: "what is the
name of Xolani's dog?

AWARENESS OF THINKING
★ To help young learner become aware of
their own thinking, you can demonstrate
your awareness of your thinking.
★ Think out loud in front of the learners
and encourage them to do the same: “I
was just thinking that we should do a
science activity now. What do you think?"
★ During reading time you can ask
questions about what a character might
be thinking: "What is the little girl thinking
about?"
★ Seeking verbal responses from learners
allows them to hear each other and
consider different perspectives.

★ Your goal with learners is to help them
improve their problem-solving skills and
develop their own learning strategies.
★ Building on learners’ previous
knowledge and actively assisting with
sense-making will help them see the utility
of strategic learning.
★ With your young learners you can facilitate
this by asking them to predict outcomes:
"What will happen if we try to put more
liquid in this full container?" and make
choices: "Do you want to help put toys
away or wipe the table?

Did you know?
Research done by Kyoto University
found that a student must use
metacognition when playing both video
games and more traditional games --
board games, for example. This
manifests his/her strategy use. The
student must plan a strategy and see it
through, evaluating which elements of
his/her plan worked and which did not
when the game is over. After the game
is over he/she must be able to
articulate her results.

Their minds run all over the place without their permission, and they go along for the ride unknowingly and without making a choice.” ― Thomas M. Sterner, 1. What does this quote mean for you? 1. Can this quote be true for the learners in your class? Substantiate your answer.   • 5. 5 WHAT IS METACOGNITION? ★ Metacognition refers to “thinking about thinking” ★ Metacognition is the knowledge you have of your own cognitive processes (your thinking). ★ It is your ability to control your thinking processes through various strategies, such as organizing, monitoring, and adapting. ★ It is your ability to reflect upon the tasks or processes you undertake ★ It is your ability to select and utilise the appropriate strategies
  • 6. 6 METACOGNITIVE ENVIRONMENT ★ Allowing learners to talk about what they are doing and giving them an opportunity to share ideas with others facilitates growth. ★ A learning environment that provides a culture encouraging mistakes and revisions also supports metacognition. ★ Through revisions and multiple attempts, young learners start collecting related information and noticing they are doing so. ★ They also become more aware of their memory.

AWARENESS OF KNOWLEDGE AWARENESS OF KNOWLEDGE ★ Prior to understanding that they are thinking, learners need to become aware that they possess knowledge. ★ As a teacher you can help demonstrate their knowledge by pointing it out: ★ "You knew just where to find the matching card," or by asking questions: "Do you know how many more need to be added so we have five trucks." During reading, ask questions about content: "what is the name of Xolani's dog? 7

AWARENESS OF THINKING AWARENESS OF THINKING ★ To help young learner become aware of their own thinking, you can demonstrate your awareness of your thinking. ★ Think out loud in front of the learners and encourage them to do the same: “I was just thinking that we should do a science activity now. What do you think?" ★ During reading time you can ask questions about what a character might be thinking: "What is the little girl thinking about?" ★ Seeking verbal responses from learners allows them to hear each other and consider different perspectives. 8

AWARENESS OF STRATEGIES AWARENESS OF STRATEGIES ★ Your goal with learners is to help them improve their problem-solving skills and develop their own learning strategies. ★ Building on learners’ previous knowledge and actively assisting with sense-making will help them see the utility of strategic learning. ★ With your young learners you can facilitate this by asking them to predict outcomes: "What will happen if we try to put more liquid in this full container?" and make choices: "Do you want to help put toys away or wipe the table? 9

  • 11. 11 FP METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY USE Did you know? Research done by Kyoto University found that a student must use metacognition when playing both video games and more traditional games -- board games, for example. This manifests his/her strategy use. The student must plan a strategy and see it through, evaluating which elements of his/her plan worked and which did not when the game is over. After the game is over he/she must be able to articulate her results.
