1st Release of antimicrobial substances into the wound and
killing the bacteria in the wound and in the wound dressing
2nd Removing the bacteria from the wound by physical methods

3. Wound dressings coated with DACC1 claim a hydrophobic
characteristic for irreversible binding of bacteria to the dressing.
The aim of this in-vitro-study was to compare the hydrophobic
characteristics of these with other wound dressings.

4. METHODS II/III
 A drop of artificial wound liquid1 was placed on the surface of
the wound dressing and a picture with a Canon EOS 400D
(18-55 mm) was taken immediately and the contact angle
was measured from a print of the picture.
 The measurement were repeated 5-10 times and the
arithmetic average and standard deviation was calculated.

1st 32 wound dressings were tested. 29 wound dressings (91%) showed contact
angles >80 degrees and 22 showed contact angles >90 degrees (69%).
2nd Cutimed Sorbact showed the greatest contact angle (120 degrees) and
Atrauman the smallest contact angle (71%).
3rd DACC coated wound dressings, foam wound dressings with or without
active substances, wound dressings fully or partly coated with silicone
showed contact angles >90 degrees and could therefore
classified as hydrophobic.
4th The hydrophobic effect is not a specific feature of DACC-coated
products. All tested foam dressings, coated with silicone or uncoated,
showed a hydrophobic effect.
