To whom it may concern;
Letter of recommendation for Carlton F. Cox
It is my distinct pleasure to write a letter of recommendation for Carlton F. Cox.
KONGSBERG is the world’s leading supplier of Remote Weapon Stations. In August 2007
KONGSBERG was awarded the CROWS II (Commonly Remotely Operated Weapon Station)
contract by the US Army. This contract committed KONGSBERG to perform field service support at
the customer’s desired locations. The CROWS II is a highly advanced weapon station that consists of
four major elements; mechanical, electrical, optical and of various software programs.
Carl was hired in May 2009 as a Lead Field Service Engineer by the Field Service Department of
KONGSBERG Protech Systems, a part of the KONGSBERG Group. He has worked in this capacity
for five years, until September 2014.
KONGSBERG had at the time, a team of FSEs in Iraq, and Carl deployed to Iraq in July 2009 with
the purpose of planning for Field Service Support in the Afghan Theater of operations. After three
months of preparation-time, Carl deployed to Bagram Airbase, Afghanistan. In Bagram Carl
established all the services and the organization necessary for the support of the fielding of the
CROWS II weapon stations for Regional Command East (RC East).
The level of support provided by these facilities has been nothing short of outstanding under Carl’s
management and leadership.
The main services provided by these facilities include:
• Advanced troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance to the CROWS II weapon stations.
• Technical and operational training to the customer’s Field Service Representatives.
• Receiving, inspecting for serviceability and preparing for shipment all CROWS II
unserviceable repair-parts from the Afghan Theater.
• Extensive travelling throughout Afghanistan to provide Field Service Support to Forward
Operating Bases and Combat Outposts.
• Technical advice and solutions for operators and commanders on a day-to-day basis.
Carl had the role of being the in-Theater liaison between KONGSBERG and the customer. This role
has been performed flawlessly and has provided KONGSBERG with valuable information as to the
performance of the CROWS II weapon system. Carl has recommended many improvements to the
product based upon experiences gained from the feedback from operators and the other Field Service
Engineers.
Carl had responsibility for all written and verbal communication from the Afghan Theater to
KONGSBERG. This included registration of all unserviceable repair-parts and weekly reports
consisting of status of the personnel, work performed and other significant information. The high
quality of the information contained in Carl’s reporting has been of great importance to
KONGSBERG.
Carl has represented the stability of the CROWS II program in Theatre, from and including the
fielding, the sustainment and retro-grade. The customer’s Theatre representatives have been on a six
month rotational basis, in comparison to Carl’s long term commitment to the CROWS II mission.
Carl’s leadership and management skills have led to a highly motivated and decorated team that
produced high quality support. His team displayed a genuine concern for the customer, the mission
and KONGSBERG. Given the working conditions in Afghanistan the moral of the team remained high
under Carl’s supervision. Carl personally received four official excellence awards from the US Army
Special Forces and the US Air Force.
During his employment Carl has proven to be a goal oriented and tireless worker. He holds a broad
range of skills that repeatedly made the difference between success and failure. Carl used his extensive
computer skills to directly support our computer assets and software upgrades in Afghanistan.
KONGSBERG sees Carl as a person that is willing to go beyond what is required to ensure that the
mission is successful.
Carl has been of great value to the CROWS II program and has KONGSBERG’s and my strongest
recommendation. I am confident that Carl will be a great addition to your team.
I will be pleased to answer any additional questions you may have.
Sincerely,
Øyvind Saastad
