Introduction
Sports coaching; is the process used by a coach to an individual or group in a sporting activity. Since
sport is defined as an individual or group competitive activity involving physical exertion or skill,
governed by rules, and sometimes engaged in professionally. Yet coaching is known as the activity or
profession of training of sports players or athletes. Eastley (1992) proposes that there are certain
traits about the successful coach which are personal qualities some are regarded as desirable, less of
the style employed, such as understanding of the players, enthusiasm, self discipline,
determination, ability to motivate, tolerance and a sense of humour.
Sports Coach UK (2001) they are the leading coaching network organisation in UK suggesting
coaches have a similar role to mentoring. As they present the core skills of mentoring consist of
observation, giving feedback, active listening and questioning. Observation is mentioned the careful
watching and recording of noting developments. Mentoring is done by giving feedback, individually
through positive criticism, praise, advice and guided self discovery which intends to provide useful
information for future decisions and developments.
Yet research from Sean Horton and Janice M. Deakin supports that coaches spend a great deal of
time in the training sessions instructing the players. Also one of Canada’s national team coaches
who says “I think that good coaching is really just good teaching. Everything I am doing is designed
to teach, teach, teach”. So coaches blend across various roles, responsibilities, qualities and skills.
Specific Aspects
For instance the particular characteristics towards a football development coach are explained by
Eastley (1992) of which are the responsibilities towards the players. These come under numerous
categories such as;

As a result the football development coach will create the local coaching projects so that the
community can see development opportunities in football. Order the coaching projects in harmony
to the children and young people’s skill and ability before setting importance on development. At all
times maintain a high level of understanding in the ethical and legal obligations. Contact is a
dominant significance. For instance from talking to partners to the community in an understandable
and welcoming behaviour. Help to make and sustain connections with the local schools and colleges,
other local authorities, sports clubs, summer camps, fitness centres, sport’s National Governing
Bodies and sports councils.
Therefore being a football development coach helps to provide the community with expert football
provision which encourages a healthy and active lifestyle. Also the philosophy of the coach is to
promote underrepresented groups of young people and children to participate in a safe and
enjoyable football experience for improving skill acquisition and sporting performance. Nonetheless
a football development coach has to have previous work experience with children and young people
before in a sporting context. The sporting practice includes schools and colleges, other local
authorities, sports clubs, summer camps, fitness centres, sport’s National Governing Bodies and
sports councils.
Along with it’s insisted that somebody who wants to be a football development coach has a
minimum of a Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football (L2CCF). This is unlike the Level 1 Certificate in
Coaching Football (L1CCF) in which it makes you be eligible only to coach foundation level club
teams for children and young people, yet you’re under the control of an experienced football coach.

In addition by having full clean driving license it shows no record of convictions or penalties, this
helps for safe traveling from one place to another. Thus the coach won’t then have to be dependent
on public transport. Furthermore at any time in football there may be an injury to one of the
participants, subsequently emergency medical treatment for somebody who is injured may be given
before more thorough medical attention can be obtained. That’s why it’s important for a football
development coach has emergency first aid certificate they will be able to give proper care and
attention to the one in pain effectively and efficiently.
Plus all the National Governing Bodies in sport have a lead in child protection and have developed
sport specific guidelines that need to be aware of before leading, teaching and coaching. As a result
the Every Child Matters Agenda ensures all children are safe and clubs have statutory duties and
responsibilities to safeguarding and protecting the children. For this reason whenever wanting to
work with young people’s a coach will need a CRB check. It is the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), an
Executive Agency of the Home Office, provides wider access to criminal record information through
its Disclosure service. This service enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors
to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain
work, especially that involves children or vulnerable adults.
Whereas a main importance quality of the football development coach achieving something is their
wide knowledge and understanding of football. Thus comprise the ability of general awareness of
information, facts, ideas, truths, or principles to explain the meanings clearly if asked any questions.
Additionally being role model to the children and young people they should be in good physical and
mental condition. However encompassing a passionate interest in sport for supporting the children
and young people’s skill and ability helps to inspire confidence and a will to continue or develop
further through guidance. Since a coach needs to be able to keep doing something or keep trying,
especially over long periods of time. Since the quality of continuing steadily progression despite
problems or difficulties is important too. Plus coaches ability to function with a number of different
people from diverse backgrounds and be able to operate alone when needed.
While a football development coach may have knowledge of Long Term Athlete Development
(LTAD), they identify critical periods in the life of a young person discovering appropriate training
aims at each phase of the participant’s physical growth in which the causes of training can be very
successful to their development. Accordingly then the coach is able to understand the talent

identification program, so a person or group of people who have exceptional ability in football can
progress up the sporting continuum pathway to elite level.
Also the job involves working at times outside usual working hours as requires evenings and
weekends needed for planning and reviewing the sessions. The same as needed is a familiarity with
administrative tasks as the use of technologies from computing, electronics, and
telecommunications to process and distribute information in digital and other forms. Therefore it is
worth having good appropriate communication skills needed for particular times with an individual
or groups of people either verbal or nonverbal.
Conclusion
Consequently I believe that a football development coach has to have experience in different roles,
responsibilities, qualities and skills to become a successful coach. As the coaches experience comes
from being actively involved from training sessions to competitive activities with groups of people or
individuals varying ages and abilities. So in moments of time this guides the coach into an enhanced
knowledge or skills. The football development coach will then have a better broad-spectrum of
understanding by having acquired range of principles, facts, ideas and information through line of
work either paid or voluntary. This skill will in turn develop the coach well that is absolutely
necessary and is worth having to be at the top of their game.
