Cost, environment, logistics and operational issues mean that training for military personnel must move out of the classroom.Training at the point of need has become a front and centre objective for military agencies over the past few years.Simulation is an important and growing part of the military training mix. Firstly, customers can reuse all of their existing VBS2 libraries of 3D assets – terrains, characters, vehicles and objects. Incident on board a C130. User must react to control the incident and assist injured colleague.Problem – delivered as PPT and Flash courseware. Not immersive enough. But it is very cheap. Many military clients see maintenance training and actual on task performance support for technical jobs as being a huge win for mobile sims.An example from a corporate client using VBSworlds.Training on car production line. Fault finding scenarios. Take the iPad on to the production line. Conduct your training in situ.VBSworlds used CAD drawings to create virtual environment. Exact replica of spatial dimensions and all factory machines.Then, double up as a task support tool. Display production line machines within the simulation environment. Pull in operational and maintenance information on each machine from central database – linked directly to the ID number of the virtual CAD models. The simulation supports both training and performance of the task.Big opportunity for Military. For example, the new QE carrier. MOD has detailed CAD models. Each model as a real ID numbers that can be used to pull in information from many different database’. For example, maintenance schedules. These could automatically be synched by the sailor on ship as they do their rounds. They use the sim to complete their maintenance checks, update the simulation with fault info etc, then synchronise this. The information is sent back to shore so the parts etc are ready when the ship docks.
Summarising the current state of play.There is a great deal of excitement in military agencies as to the potential of mobile sims.There has been a push to get sims deployed on mobile, using the same performance model as for other platforms. These are level 1 appsThis model roles out broadly the same simulations across web, desktop PC and mobile devicesWe are now seeing a move beyond this into Level 2 mobile apps that begin to use the specific affordances of mobility and some of the fantastic new functionality offered by smart phone and tablet devices – GPS and location sensitive events, gyroscope, compass, camera, multi touch, proximity sensor, temperature,
