According to Gartner VP of Research Jay Heiser, "Understand where your data is and who is in control of it.
Look at technology issues, such as infrastructure, platforms, and risk management. Fact is, the aspects of cloud computing that make it appealing from an economic point of view make it difficult to assess risk.
Plug and play suggests a lack of transparency -- if you don't know what's under the hood, you probably can't assess it. People really need help with all this."

Cloud Tracking: Do you know where
your data is?
Whether running an in-house cloud-
based system, or selling services to
enterprise customers, IT managers
are facing some challenging
questions in terms of the handling
and physical location of data that go
beyond security, performance and
access issues.
Ubiquitous access to, and movement of, data
could fly in the face of privacy legislation
requirements within certain countries.
In Canada, PIPEDA (Personal Information
Protection and Electronic Documents Act),
demands that any request for personal data be
approved through the courts. The EU Data
Privacy Protection Direction cites similar
provisions.
But under certain provisions in the US Patriot Act,
the government has the power to obtain copies of
data from U.S.-based service providers, while
prohibiting them from disclosure to customers. This
creates uncertainty for:
• Universities and colleges, who have been
among the first to restrict the location of
data and ban the use of services such as
Gmail to protect student information
• Healthcare facilities maintaining
confidential patient records that are
required to keep data within designated
regions.
• Financial institutions and payment
processing services
• Online advertising campaigns that collect
personal information that must be
segmented in order to comply with
national privacy requirements
• Government agencies collecting
information on private citizens
How to tame the cloud
1. For in-house applications, the best approach is
to create discrete clouds and use a
combination of encryption and VPN tools to
enable the physical segmentation of data.
Virtualization allows
providers to split
applications and segment
data processing functions
without adding significantly
to infrastructure costs, or
compromising performance
or security.
2. Segment data geographically
by engaging individual
providers within each region
to keep sensitive data within
specified borders.
Choose providers with a
choice of international
hosting facilities as a means
to segment data in keeping
with specific local
jurisdictional requirements.
Providers able to manage
clouds in multiple data center
locations enable you to move
processing functions around
your data, versus the other
way around.
The cloud is everywhere,
traversing geographical borders.
But when it comes to data,
boundaries do matter.
