The idea behind the event

● Large scale event bringing two communities
  together
● Sea to Summit Challenge

● Perseverance & belief

        355 people, 100 teams
1,027,501 yen raised for Oxfam Japan
The Challenge
● Visit all 29 stations of the Yamanote line in one day.

● Photograph your team in front of every station

● Try and finish in less than 12 hours

● A brisk walking pace, and a few rest breaks

● The overall course is approximately 45km.

● There is a map available which suggests a route, but
  teams are encouraged to plan their own course.

● Navigating for yourself is part of the challenge!

The Unexpected
Where's my money going?
How much is it?
● 7000 yen per team.
● For a team of 4 that's only 1,750yen each
● 6000 yen donation to Oxfam Japan.
● 1000 yen to cover extra costs.

   ○ Paypal transfer fee
   ○ Event insurance for each team member.
The Situation
● The worst drought in 60 years has hit Somalia hardest.

● Political instability, as well as armed conflict, exacerbate the food
  supply problem.

● The food crisis is expected to push up to 13million people into a
  fight for survival.

● Because of the food crisis, refugees are streaming out of
  Somalia at a massive rate.

● At the peak of the crisis 10,000 refugees were arriving each
  week into just one refugee camp.

● Dabaab is now the world's largest refugee camp, and the
  population is approaching 500,000 people.
Finishing Safely
Getting Ready
 ● Training is a good idea!

 ● Walk between stations on the Yamanote line.

 ● Maybe walk home from work.

 ● Practise urban navigation
Google walking directions? Smartphone?
 ● Make sure to 'wear in' any gear you are likely to use,
  especially shoes.

  ● If you are going to buy shoes, buy them now.
blisters won't cause you to drop out, but they'll hurt!
What you need:
Essential:
    ○ Comfortable shoes
(don't use new shoes)
     ○ Running/hiking clothes
(beware chafing!)
     ○ Spending money
     ○ Mobile phone
     ○ Small first aid kit / 'nurofen' or similar

Recommended:
    ○ Rain wear
(anorak or lightweight raincoat)
     ○ Energy bars and food
     ○ Spare socks
     ○ Camel Pack (water reservoir)

Safety during the event:
● You are responsible for your own safety - use
  common sense at all times.

● It's a team event for a reason, support each other.

● You can run the event, but this is not a traditional
  marathon with a dedicated course.

● This is an urban challenge so beware of urban
  obstacles!
   ○ Pedestrians
   ○ Bicycles
   ○ Cars - do NOT jaywalk, follow traffic signals
