Oliver’s Early Life
Chapter 1
Book: Oliver Twist
Author: Charles Dickens
Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse. He
fought his first battle with a little help from
two people, one old woman and a busy local
doctor. When he was born his mother said
“let me see the child”, and She died.
The nurse and the doctor ask themselves where the
Oliver’s mother come from, she wasrn´t wearing a
weadding ring. “The old story”, said the doctor.
The doctor leaves Oliver with the drunken nurse, she
dressed him in cotton clothes and looks as he was, an
orphan in a workhouse.
Oliver was sent to a special “baby farm”. Mrs
Mann, old woman, take care him.
She bad use the money that she was given
for the childreen´s food.
Oliver is 9 years old with a strong spirit but
with a weak body in hard conditions.
Mr. Bumble arrives to workhouse to talk
about Oliver’s destiny with Mrs. Mann
Mr. Bumble said that Oliver was old enough
to return to the workhouse.
While Mr. Bumble drank a glass with Gin
and water, Mrs. Mann went to get Oliver.
Then, Mr. Bumble asked to Oliver: Will you
come along with me?
Oliver was leaving behind the
other children, the only friend he had.
Oliver on his short Little legs running
benside Mrs Bumble.
The room in the workhouse where the
boys were fed was a large stone hall, and
at one end the master and two women
served the food. This consisted of a bowl
of thin soup three times a day, with a
piece of bread on Sundays. The boys ate
everything and were always hungry.
Oliver asked more food, but the master
hit him the serving spoon, then seized
Oliver’s arms and shouted for the beadle.
The beadle tell the board he asked more
and Oliver was punished.
