14. Tobacco Use Accomplishments
• Over 500 individuals were screened in their homes for
2ndhand smoke exposure
• 4 CHA developments smoke-free
• All City colleges & Roosevelt University are smoke-free now
• 4 more hospitals are now smoke-free
• Catholic schools smoke-free
• Over 12,000 received free NRT
• The Y of Metro Chicago expanded its smoke-free policy at
four of its residential facilities with a commitment to be 100
percent smoke free by October 2012

16. Obesity Prevention Accomplishments
• Urban agriculture ordinance was passed by City Council
• Grant Partnership with U of C – Diabetes Translational
Research
• YMCA of Metro Chicago passed formal nutrition and physical
activity standards for their after-school programming.
• Awarded $800,000 to 10 community-based organizations
through a competitive process to increase healthy options in
corner stores, support breast feeding education and
implement healthy changes in schools
• Healthy Vending of both snacks and beverages coming soon

• ECCHPP funding totaling $2,327,266 dollars
• Delivered advanced HIV prevention trainings to 1,142
providers (exceeding goal of 900)
• New HIV Policy/Planning position
• 10,311,400 condoms distributed in 2011
• Initiated the Chicago community condom project

Accomplishments
• 16 hospitals have completed “Baby Friendly”
assessments
• 3 hospitals are in 4D Pathways, 2 more are scheduled
to enter
• 9 Chicago hospitals (47%) are taking steps to become
officially designated as Baby-Friendly
hospitals, including NW’s Prentice Women’s Hospital
which has the highest number of deliveries in Chicago
• Increased WIC support for breastfeeding through
lactation counselor training
