An introduction to OneFiftyNine’s work with 3M
OneFiftyNine is a marketing and design company with a difference.
These days business moves at a pace that was unthinkable even five years ago. And to succeed you need to

Working with 3M since 1989.
Both Chris Cullen and Ed Toll have worked with 3M over many years, across many of its businesses: Health &
Safety, Industrial Tapes & Adhesives, Abrasives Systems, Road Safety, Electrical Products, Automotive Aftermarket
and Post-it® Products.
Currently OneFiftyNine works closely with both the Commercial Solutions and Personal Safety Divisions. Our work
is wide ranging from the planning and implementation of multi-channel European-wide product launches, to the
on-going generation of written content for placement across varying channels including websites, trade magazines
and newsletters; and from product animations, product and application photography to video production (both
product demonstrations and testimonial).

CLIENT: 3M Commercial Graphics Division
PROJECT: 3M Envision Print Film 48C
OVERVIEW: We were briefed to develop a concept
and subsequent suite of marketing collateral to promote and sell
3M’s intermediate digital print film, the Envision Print Film 48C.
The key advantage of the product is its versatility and so the
concept developed was based around a chameleon (this had
the added benefit of allowing us to demonstrate the quality and
range of colours the print film is able to achieve).
With other key benefits including not only the quality of the print
but also the ease with which it can be fitted, it was decided that
video would need to form an important part of the materials
we created. From the subsequent video and photoshoot out
in Neuss, Germany we created one main overview video and
a series of shorter videos to demonstrate the myriad benefits
of the product. To aid the sales force and drive customers to
the product site, and ultimately the videos, we also developed
a product brochure, sell sheet, banner ads and press release.
The full set of product and application images were also made
available to the client for future use.
All materials were packaged up into a ‘digital toolkit’ and made
available to 3M’s european regional offices where they were
translated and used to target local markets.

CLIENT: 3M Personal Safety Division
PROJECT: 3M Combat Arms Earplugs
OVERVIEW: Our brief from 3M was to create a
photo-realistic 3D rendered animation to sell the features and
benefits of a brand new military-grade hearing protection
product. The 3M Combat Arms Earplug is a reusable earplug
that combines 3M’s typical high levels of attenuation (hearing
protection) with a unique filter which allows the wearer to switch
it to situational awareness mode. This groundbreaking feature
allows low level sound (like voice commands) to be heard
clearly, while still protecting the wearer from high impact
sound (like gunfire).
From the CAD drawings and physical product we were modelled
up an accurate 3D render of the product around which we then
created a slick animation showing a soldier using the product on
a firing range to represent the key features and benefits of the
product in a real life situation.
The animation has since been translated into over 10 languages
for use across Europe and the United States.
CLIENT: 3M Personal Safety Division
PROJECT: 3M E-A-R One Touch Pro Dispenser
OVERVIEW: Our brief from 3M was to create a
photo-realistic 3D rendered animation to sell the features and
benefits of a product that, at that time had been conceived and
designed but not manufactured. The 3M E-A-R One Touch Pro,
a wall-mountable ear plug dispenser, overcomes many of the
challenges competitor products struggle with - chiefly the ability
to accurately dispense exactly the number of ear plugs required
through a newly developed and patented mechanism.
From just the existing CAD drawings we created a slick fully
rendered and coloured 3D animation which highlights the
features and communicated the benefits clearly while setting
the One Touch against the backdrop of a typical industry
environment within which the product would likely be used.
The animation has since been translated into over 10 languages
for use across Europe and the United States.
CLIENT: 3M Graphics Market
PROJECT: Show don’t tell - your customer’s story
OVERVIEW: OneFiftyNine was asked to put together
a marketing communications programme to build closer
relationships and create business opportunities with small
graphics converters across Europe who typically have little
interaction with 3M and buy through distribution. Our strategy
(Show don’t tell) was to harness the voice of existing loyal
customers and demonstrate how their relationship with 3M is
helping them gain competitive advantage and build market
share. With the help of the UK business we identified Joyce
Design as a suitable ‘customer voice’, interviewed the MD and
Applications Manager on film and created an English language
video. The content from the video was then used to create an
e-mailer, press ad, banner ad, feature article, case study pdf
and press release. It was then put into a digital toolkit with
accompanying implementation guide for the European markets
to adapt and to help develop their own local versions.

CLIENT: 3M Personal Safety Division
PROJECT: Classic Ear Plugs
OVERVIEW: 3M’s E-A-R Classic ‘foam’ earplug has
been around for over 50 years, and while overall market share
is impressive sales had been flat for the past few years. We
were asked to help relaunch the product with a European-wide
marketing campaign. The approach we took was to remind
purchase decision makers of the science that underpins this
simple foam earplug.
We designed and rolled out materials that included printed
datasheets and press ads, online banner ads, email templates,
a microsite and a multi-language promotional video. Prospects
were driven to the microsite and encouraged to enter a
competition. In this way customer details were captured
and sales leads followed up both by 3M and 3M’s regional
distributor network.

PROJECT: Scotch-BriteTM
Microfibre Wipes
OVERVIEW: For 3M’s Scotch-Brite Microfibre Wipes
campaign we focussed on the microfibre technology that
ensures they consistently outperform traditional wipes and
cleaning materials. One part of the campaign involved the
creation of illustrations that quickly and simply communicated
that technology, while for another part we used video
testimonials to substantiate the claims. The campaign included
commissioned photography, video and specialist printing –
varnishing part of the brochure front cover to reinforce the
message and create additional ‘standout’. Individual product
inserts were produced to fit into the brochure pocket.

PROJECT: Graffiti Remover
OVERVIEW: Traditional graffiti removers are corrosive
and flammable, whilst greener alternatives are seen as
less effective. 3M recently launched a new range of graffiti
removers that protect cleaners and the environment, without
compromising on performance. Under the campaign theme of
‘Tough on graffiti. Kind on cleaners’ OneFiftyNine developed a
suite of marketing materials to support the launch. In particular,
we created a short video that was able to clearly demonstrate
(with testimonial endorsements) the effectiveness of the
product. Produced in conjunction with Bracknell Forest Council
and Ringway, the filming of the video was used by Bracknell
Forest Council to support their own anti-graffiti initiative in
the local community. This initiative (which was originated
and executed by OneFiftyNine) was recognised by Big Tick
2013 Business in the Community and was also highlighted in
Ringways’s own Corporate Responsibility Report 2012.

PROJECT: Scotch-Brite Quick Clean

OVERVIEW: Cleaning dirt-encrusted griddles
has traditionally been one of the toughest jobs in the
commercial kitchen. Not any more. 3M recently introduced
the Scotch-Brite™ Quick-Clean Griddle Cleaning System.
With the headline promise that Quick-Clean ‘cuts your
griddle cleaning time by half’, OneFiftyNine created a suite
of marketing materials to help launch the product. This
included a short video demonstration of the 3-step process.

PROJECT: SecureFit
OVERVIEW: Poor fit and discomfort is cited as one
of the main reasons ‘at risk’ workers don’t wear the correct
eye protection. The new SecureFit range of eyewear aims
to address this by using 3M’s latest proprietary Pressure
Diffusion Technology. We created an integrated suite of
marketing materials that clearly communicated the selling
message, including printed sell sheets, press ads
and sample packaging through to online banner ads and
e-shot templates. All were designed to drive prospects to
a microsite where they could request a sample and trial
SecureFit for themselves.

PROJECT: Love your floor campaign
OVERVIEW: 3M is able to offer a more comprehensive
range of floor maintenance and protection products than any
of its competitors, and has developed a strategy ‘to own the
floor’. Part of that strategy was to develop a campaign concept
to present 3M’s offering to the contract cleaning market. The
end-user insight that led to the ‘love your floor’ concept was the
recognition that those responsible for floor maintenance take
enormous pride in the appearance of their floors. The campaign
concept was worked through into press and banner advertising
with a landing page on the 3M website that carried the concept
and core message.

PROJECT: Nomad Optima+ Entrance Matting
OVERVIEW: The aluminium framed entrance matting
market in Europe is extremely competitive, and 3M’s acquisition
of French manufacturer, Aravis, allowed the business to improve
its offering to the market and significantly reduce lead times.
OneFiftyNine was asked by 3M to support the launch of this new
range of matting across Europe by creating a pack of marketing
support materials that could be adapted to each local market.
Under the launch theme of ‘Engineered to last’ we produced a
full suite of marketing collateral including an Ordering Guide &
Order Form to make it easier for customers to provide 3M with
the correct specifications, as the majority of mats are bespoke
to the customers’ requirements. The launch of Nomad Optima+
Entrance Matting was successfully rolled out across Europe.

OVERVIEW: A significant element of the campaigns
we’ve worked on with 3M has been the generation of content,
the placement of commissioned articles and news releases in
key European-wide trade media. We work across a number of
trade publications both in terms of media buying for advertising

of things we also script, film, edit and produce video for our

CLIENT: 3M Commercial Graphics Division PROJECT: 3M Envision Print Film 48C OVERVIEW: We were briefed to develop a concept and subsequent suite of marketing collateral to promote and sell 3M’s intermediate digital print film, the Envision Print Film 48C. The key advantage of the product is its versatility and so the concept developed was based around a chameleon (this had the added benefit of allowing us to demonstrate the quality and range of colours the print film is able to achieve). With other key benefits including not only the quality of the print but also the ease with which it can be fitted, it was decided that video would need to form an important part of the materials we created. From the subsequent video and photoshoot out in Neuss, Germany we created one main overview video and a series of shorter videos to demonstrate the myriad benefits of the product. To aid the sales force and drive customers to the product site, and ultimately the videos, we also developed a product brochure, sell sheet, banner ads and press release. The full set of product and application images were also made available to the client for future use. All materials were packaged up into a ‘digital toolkit’ and made available to 3M’s european regional offices where they were translated and used to target local markets.

CLIENT: 3M Personal Safety Division PROJECT: 3M Combat Arms Earplugs OVERVIEW: Our brief from 3M was to create a photo-realistic 3D rendered animation to sell the features and benefits of a brand new military-grade hearing protection product. The 3M Combat Arms Earplug is a reusable earplug that combines 3M’s typical high levels of attenuation (hearing protection) with a unique filter which allows the wearer to switch it to situational awareness mode. This groundbreaking feature allows low level sound (like voice commands) to be heard clearly, while still protecting the wearer from high impact sound (like gunfire). From the CAD drawings and physical product we were modelled up an accurate 3D render of the product around which we then created a slick animation showing a soldier using the product on a firing range to represent the key features and benefits of the product in a real life situation. The animation has since been translated into over 10 languages for use across Europe and the United States.

CLIENT: 3M Personal Safety Division PROJECT: 3M E-A-R One Touch Pro Dispenser OVERVIEW: Our brief from 3M was to create a photo-realistic 3D rendered animation to sell the features and benefits of a product that, at that time had been conceived and designed but not manufactured. The 3M E-A-R One Touch Pro, a wall-mountable ear plug dispenser, overcomes many of the challenges competitor products struggle with - chiefly the ability to accurately dispense exactly the number of ear plugs required through a newly developed and patented mechanism. From just the existing CAD drawings we created a slick fully rendered and coloured 3D animation which highlights the features and communicated the benefits clearly while setting the One Touch against the backdrop of a typical industry environment within which the product would likely be used. The animation has since been translated into over 10 languages for use across Europe and the United States.

CLIENT: 3M Graphics Market PROJECT: Show don’t tell - your customer’s story OVERVIEW: OneFiftyNine was asked to put together a marketing communications programme to build closer relationships and create business opportunities with small graphics converters across Europe who typically have little interaction with 3M and buy through distribution. Our strategy (Show don’t tell) was to harness the voice of existing loyal customers and demonstrate how their relationship with 3M is helping them gain competitive advantage and build market share. With the help of the UK business we identified Joyce Design as a suitable ‘customer voice’, interviewed the MD and Applications Manager on film and created an English language video. The content from the video was then used to create an e-mailer, press ad, banner ad, feature article, case study pdf and press release. CLIENT: 3M Personal Safety Division PROJECT: Classic Ear Plugs OVERVIEW: 3M’s E-A-R Classic ‘foam’ earplug has been around for over 50 years, and while overall market share is impressive sales had been flat for the past few years. We were asked to help relaunch the product with a European-wide marketing campaign. The approach we took was to remind purchase decision makers of the science that underpins this simple foam earplug. We designed and rolled out materials that included printed datasheets and press ads, online banner ads, email templates, a microsite and a multi-language promotional video. Prospects were driven to the microsite and encouraged to enter a competition. In this way customer details were captured and sales leads followed up both by 3M and 3M’s regional distributor network.

CLIENT: 3M Building & Commercial Services PROJECT: Scotch-BriteTM Microfibre Wipes OVERVIEW: For 3M’s Scotch-Brite Microfibre Wipes campaign we focussed on the microfibre technology that ensures they consistently outperform traditional wipes and cleaning materials. One part of the campaign involved the creation of illustrations that quickly and simply communicated that technology, while for another part we used video testimonials to substantiate the claims. The campaign included commissioned photography, video and specialist printing – varnishing part of the brochure front cover to reinforce the message and create additional ‘standout’. Individual product inserts were produced to fit into the brochure pocket.

CLIENT: 3M Building & Commercial Services PROJECT: Graffiti Remover OVERVIEW: Traditional graffiti removers are corrosive and flammable, whilst greener alternatives are seen as less effective. 3M recently launched a new range of graffiti removers that protect cleaners and the environment, without compromising on performance. Under the campaign theme of ‘Tough on graffiti. Kind on cleaners’ OneFiftyNine developed a suite of marketing materials to support the launch. In particular, we created a short video that was able to clearly demonstrate (with testimonial endorsements) the effectiveness of the product. Produced in conjunction with Bracknell Forest Council and Ringway, the filming of the video was used by Bracknell Forest Council to support their own anti-graffiti initiative in the local community. This initiative (which was originated and executed by OneFiftyNine) was recognised by Big Tick 2013 Business in the Community and was also highlighted in Ringways’s own Corporate Responsibility Report 2012.

Not any more. 3M recently introduced the Scotch-Brite™ Quick-Clean Griddle Cleaning System. With the headline promise that Quick-Clean ‘cuts your griddle cleaning time by half’, OneFiftyNine created a suite of marketing materials to help launch the product. This included a short video demonstration of the 3-step process. Seeing is believing.

  • 22. CLIENT: Personal Safety Division PROJECT: SecureFit OVERVIEW: Poor fit and discomfort is cited as one of the main reasons ‘at risk’ workers don’t wear the correct eye protection. The new SecureFit range of eyewear aims to address this by using 3M’s latest proprietary Pressure Diffusion Technology. We created an integrated suite of marketing materials that clearly communicated the selling message, including printed sell sheets, press ads and sample packaging through to online banner ads and e-shot templates. All were designed to drive prospects to a microsite where they could request a sample and trial SecureFit for themselves.

CLIENT: 3M Building & Commercial Services PROJECT: Love your floor campaign OVERVIEW: 3M is able to offer a more comprehensive range of floor maintenance and protection products than any of its competitors, and has developed a strategy ‘to own the floor’. Part of that strategy was to develop a campaign concept to present 3M’s offering to the contract cleaning market. The end-user insight that led to the ‘love your floor’ concept was the recognition that those responsible for floor maintenance take enormous pride in the appearance of their floors. The campaign concept was worked through into press and banner advertising with a landing page on the 3M website that carried the concept and core message.

CLIENT: 3M Workplace Safety PROJECT: Nomad Optima+ Entrance Matting OVERVIEW: The aluminium framed entrance matting market in Europe is extremely competitive, and 3M’s acquisition of French manufacturer, Aravis, allowed the business to improve its offering to the market and significantly reduce lead times. OneFiftyNine was asked by 3M to support the launch of this new range of matting across Europe by creating a pack of marketing support materials that could be adapted to each local market. Under the launch theme of ‘Engineered to last’ we produced a full suite of marketing collateral including an Ordering Guide & Order Form to make it easier for customers to provide 3M with the correct specifications, as the majority of mats are bespoke to the customers’ requirements.
