Telum Talks To… Christina Lau Tam, Head of Marketing and
PR, Brinc.io
Can you give us a bit of background to Brinc.io, its current set up and how it is
looking to expand?
Brinc is an ultra hands on accelerator hardware accelerator that works with early stage
hardware founders to get the speed, access and the know-how
to build successful companies. In addition to our education-backed acceleration program
we offer studio manufacturing services, co-working and organised trips to China for
hardware entrepreneurs looking to manufacture in China for the first time. We have offices
in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou and satellite offices in London and Bahrain.
Now supporting more than 20 start-ups who we’ve helped collectively raise more than
$10M USD, we’re looking forward to supporting the growing hardware ecosystem with
adding more companies to the portfolio and offering services specific to hardware
companies.
What does your role of Head of Marketing & PR at Brinc.io involve?
As Head of Marketing and PR, I oversee all marketing, communications, media relations,
content marketing and development and digital marketing for Brinc. As a relatively young
hardware accelerator, much of what I do revolves around how we tell our story to develop
and build the brand so that we can better connect with hardware founders around the
world. I also act as an advisor to the start-ups in our portfolio and support with positioning
and messaging particularly as they look to launching their first campaign to shipping their
first product. It’s never a dull moment here whether I’m working with Brinc’s founders or
the founders in our portfolio to determine how best to tell our story and share with our
audiences.
What is your team structure within Brinc.io and what are the team’s main roles and
responsibilities?
We’re small and lean marketing machine. In addition to the responsibilities I outlined
above, I also oversee speaking engagement and partner on events with my Head of
Events colleague. He oversees our annual flagship IoT event in addition to our ongoing
series of events at our accelerator and co-working space at PMQ, partner venues and
globally with hardware meet ups. We also have a strong team of interns who have
supported us with creative and events support. On occasion we will also partner with
agencies on projects as we did recently with our flagship event.
What is Brinc.io’s approach to PR and communications?
Our approach is similar to what we teach our start-ups - to be nimble while trying to
iterate as quickly as possible. We are keen to build our brand awareness quickly and get
ourselves known by the global hardware community. Like most companies, we can’t be
everywhere all of the time so we’re doing our best to focus on a marketing approach that
speaks to our founders and community and provides value added insights. Whether this is
through interviews and articles on our blog or via events, the goal behind our content is to
always leave something useful behind with the reader or attendee.
6. What is your success over the length of your career down to?
Love what you do in and out of the office. I make it a point to lead a healthy work lifestyle
balance. While I take pride in my work, it’s also equally important to pursue interests which
for me including running, yoga, and travel while spending time with friends and family.
There are a few major trends relevant to the communications profession that are
constantly being discussed such as social media, content marketing etc. What
trends are you keeping a close eye on?
We need to keep a close eye on everything but for now am keeping a close eye on new
and newish platforms including podcasting, particularly Facebook Live and Snapchat.
Given that we work so closely with our offices in China, we also use WeChat to
communicate to audiences in Mainland. Any way that we can get to global audiences
faster with great, relevant content is paramount.
Where do you get your news from?
Everywhere. In the mornings and evening I usually have CNBC or CNN turned on in the
background. I’m constantly experimenting with different mediums. Facebook, Twitter,
Feedly, Snapchat, podcasts on specific topics and old fashioned news outlets such as
CNN.com, WSJ, FT and TechCrunch. Then there’s the assortment of daily newsletters
that flood my inbox of which Quartz and Recode I find most useful. When I have the
pleasure of waiting at the airport or on a plane I always be sure to pack a print copy of The
Economist and Wired and download the latest editions of Vanity Fair to my iPad.
Proudest moment in your career?
There have been so many. Most recently it was helping one of our portfolio companies
document their journey from being a concept to now a profitable business shipping units
worldwide in less than 15 months for placement in a regional outlet. It’s not earth
shattering news but I’m proud of the work that we’ve done to help these entrepreneurs
along into creating sustainable businesses and products. To be able to help tell their
stories to others who may find it helpful is a gift.
