Argument
înseamnă a iubi?
- Mircea Cărtărescu, Care-i faza cu cititul?
Why do we promote reading? We love books and we want to share them with others, to
enjoy reading together. Isn`t this love? No matter what language we use to comprehend the
message (Romanian, English, French, German, Hungarian, Chinese or any other language)...
the message is the same.
One book read each month can become a connection between all of those who love to
read, from all over Europe. This is the aim of our multicultural newspaper, because the
connection between us was made by the European platform, eTwinning, where we promote our
passions and share the same dreams
We believe books are like butterflies.
A legend says that, after creating flowers, God was asked by some to give them wings,
to be able to touch the sky. God listened to their prayer and this is how butterflies were created.
The same way, books asked their writers to give them wings, to be able to reach us, readers,
and help us grow, enlighten.
Butterflies are fragile, delicate, fearfull, shy, like all the good parts that are inside us.
The butterfly can be seen like an insect that „dies”, it is buried in its shell for a while and
4. „Fluturi și cărți”, nr. 4/2017
4
then, gets a new life, like a creature which has the ability to change usual things, being able to
fly up to the sky. The book is similar to a butterfly. It „kills” the feelings of its author, giving
them another life through the book, which, in our hands, in readers` hands, generates change,
helps us discover, progress, makes us better, bright, daring… makes us free. We`ll only be able
to experience exteriour change, if we change our inside reality first.
Butterflies are the simbol of those who dare to dream. Dare to dream through books!

ABSOLUT TOT

Everything , Everything
By Nicola Yoon
The disease of Maddy, the protagonist of the book, it is rare and famous at the same time.
For short, she’s allergic to the world. She’s not allowed to leave the house and she hasn’t been
out for sixteen years. The only people she sees in flash and blood are her mother and Carla ,
the nurse that takes care of her. But then, one day, a truck comes to the house next door . Maddy
looks out the window and sees him. He is tall, slender, dressed all in black – black t-shirt, black
jeans, black sneakers and a black fez that covers his whole hair. He catches her gaze and stares
at her. Maddy does the same. His name is Olly. Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can
predict at least something. For example, Maddy is sure she will fall in love with Olly. Almost
certainly it will be a disaster.
Even from the description, the book “Everything, Everything” gets you in its unique story,
which includes everything you would expect a good book to have: romanticism, passion,
intelligence, humor, and offers you a novel experience. It was an unexpected lecture with a plot
that no one would expect, which keeps you out of breath and makes you want to read the ending
of the story, but at the same time, you wish the story to never end. It’s not a book that really
hits you, but it’s definitely one that will remain in your mind long time after you read it.
“Everything, Everything” was like a star from the top of the Christmas tree, which you never
want to take off.
Quotes:
“Life is a gift. Don’t forget to live it.”
“Maybe growing up means disappointing the people we love”
“I am sure about one thing: wanting just leads to more wanting. There’s no end to
desire.”
“If my life were a book and you read it backward , nothing would change. Today is the
same as yesterday.”
“Sometimes you do things for the right reasons and sometimes for the wrong ones and
sometimes it’s impossible to tell the difference.”
“Another breath and my life, eventually, finally, will explode.”

ADELA
by Garabet Ibrăileanu
The novel Adela was published in May 1933 and is the only fictional story written by
the Romanian critic. Based on the generous, but at the same time complex theme of love, the
novel is poor regarding the epic aspect. The story is told by Doctor Emil Codrescu who hides
his feelings for the girl who is now a woman because he feels too old for her and unable to offer
her eternal love. The paternal feeling for the girl at the beginning and later the brotherly love
for the teenager give life to a love for the mysterious woman. This love will never be confessed,
but it will always be camouflaged as an ‘unending passionate friendship’. The essence of the
novel represents the psychological introspection of the 40-year-old man, a delicate intellectual
man who doesn’t believe in the sincere love of a 20-year-old woman, despite the subtle hints

she shows. This drama is magnified by the mystery surrounding the woman which gives the
novel its charm. The story takes places around 1900 when any kissing of the skin of a woman
generated a large emotional response.
Garabet Ibrăileanu’s novel is unique, because nowhere will we find a more realistic
representation of feminine mystery, and so the novel remains one of the most stories of
Romanian literature.

Romanul
THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS
By John Boyne
John Boyne is an Irish writer who was born in Dublin in 1971. He has written countless
books and stories for children. His book, „The boy in the striped pyjamas”,was sold worldwide
in over 2.5 million copies and was recently screened by Miramax.
This book is a historical fiction based on the horrors of the Second World War and is
centered on the suffering of the Jews imprisoned in the labor camps because of the fanaticism
of the Nazi leader. John Boyne's novel presents the quirky story of a nine-year-old boy named
Bruno. He looks with innocence and great curiosity on the mysteries of the camp in front of the
house. He has lived so far in Berlin in a mysterious family: his mother, his sister who he calls
"a hopeless case," and his father, a very important man in the Nazi army. In a worry-free
universe, morally and financially supported by his family, Bruno spends his childhood with his
three friends: Karl, Daniel and Martin. The silence is shattered when he sees Maria, the family's
maid, packing his stuff, and finds out that the whole family will leave Berlin. At first, the boy
is very reluctant because suddenly he is forced to give up daily comfort, but especially to his
three friends ("But they are my best three friends for life!"). He has to give up the balustrade of
the house he slips daily, a trivial object, but with great significance for him ("The balustrade
was the most wonderful thing in this house." "And Bruno did not like anything more than to
Throw on the railing. ").
He totally dislikes his new home, which seems to him grim, poor and unpopular. What
attracts his attention is the barbed wire fence that racks a lot of precarious barracks and a lot of
people. ("Boys, older boys, fathers, grandparents, uncles, and single men who do not seem to
have any relatives, wear the same kind of clothing: gray pajamas in stripes and on the head gray
striped caps "). One day, from the desire to explore the new land, he walked along the fence
and discovered a silhouette. Thus, he knows Shmuel and becomes closer and closer. As time
passes, Bruno's mother decides to return to Berlin and take his two brothers with her. For this
reason, the boy decides to enter the camp and spend more time with Shmuel. For sinister
reasons, he remains forever in the camp ("Then the room turned dark and somehow, despite the
chaos that followed, Bruno discovered that he was still holding Shmuel by his hand, and nothing
would have determined him to let him go. "). The family is very alarmed, desperately looking
for Bruno, but, one by one, learns to live without the little boy ("Gretel returned with her mother
to Berlin and spent a lot of time crying alone in her room ... because Bruno was missing so
15. „Fluturi și cărți”, nr. 4/2017
15
much. "" Father [...] went to sleep every night thinking about Bruno and rising every morning
thinking about him too. ").
The book is a lesson of life because it conveys readers to appreciate the important beings
of their lives because there will come a moment when the evidence of love, affection,
appreciation and respect will be superfluous. I was very impressed by the friendship between
the two boys, its strength culminating in Bruno's final gesture. Even if at some point he denied
their friendship for fear, Bruno appreciates and honestly respects Shmuel ("Shmuel, you are my
best friend [...] My best friend for life!"). The reader has the opportunity to look through the
eyes of a nine year old Holocaust child and the horrors of the Second World War.

LEGENDA
de Marie Lu
Lumea s-a schimbat definitiv.
June și Day

cititorilor într-o sferă a literaturii americane dominate
de bărbați, construiește o poveste intrigantă cu
personaje puternic personalizate.
Romanul prezintă în contextul războiului civil american viața tulburată a unei
stranie exaltare.”

Gone With the Wind
by Margaret Mitchell
Gone With the Wind, first published in May 1936, is a historical/romantic novel written
by Margaret Mitchell, who won the Pulitzer Prize for it in 1937. The controversial author, who
captures the attention of readers within a sphere of American literature dominated by men,
builds an intriguing storyline with well-developed characters. What the author Margaret
Mitchell succeeded in doing was creating an image of undoubtable dramatic expressiveness
through details that were not always relevant.
In order for Scarlett, the protagonist of the novel, to show her ability of getting through
the struggles of the war, she must have had unusual qualities. The consequences of this event
were irremediable and so afterwards, Scarlett was forced to go through them, her spiritual life
being motivated by a strong faith in herself.
Within the context of the American Civil War, the novel presents the turbulent life of
an aristocratic teenager, Scarlett O’Hara, who is in love with intellectual dreamer Ashley, and
is too preoccupied to realize the passion she felt towards the controversial courter Rhett Butler.
The novel takes place in Georgia, a state in southeast United States, during the Civil
War and later, the Reconstruction period. The protagonist, Scarlett O’Hara, is thus the definition
of a strong woman, capable of anything in order to achieve her goals, her beauty, charm, green
eyes, and slim waist.
After the death of her first husband, Charles Hamilton, she moves to Atlanta where she
lives together with Ashley’s wife, Melanie, and her aunt Pittypat. Here, it is difficult for her to
get accustomed to her status as a widow, missing the beautiful dresses and the swarm of men
that she was used to. With the end of the war, she returns to the place where her life becomes a
battle to survive. Unable to resist any longer, she goes back to Atlanta and marries Frank
Kennedy, who helps her take care of her plantation.
Through her two marriages, Scarlett believes that Ashley is the one she loves, and the
only one with whom she could be happy. When she finally marries Rhett Butler, the only man
who was crazy in love with her and who knew every mystery of her heart, she realizes how
blind she has been.
“They knew that love snatched in the face of danger and death was doubly sweet for the
strange excitement that went with it.”

LOOKING FOR ALASKA
by John Green
Youth is a road full of music, joy, walks with your friends, jokes, smiles, tears, emotions,
strong feelings and broken relationships. It is the period where nothing seems impossible, but
yet sometimes we are afraid to try or to go further. Wherever we go, we take our stories with
us and we worry about them so that they will not be destroyed, although time carelessly passes
over them and some may even be forgotten. We are the sum of our memories in which we,
involuntary or not, participated. This is what John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska is about:
The story of young Miles, or how his friends used to call him, “Pudge,” (an ironic nickname
because he was very skinny), a lonely and bored teenager, obsessed with famous people’s last
words. He leaves for Culver Creek boarding school to search for what Rabelais called “The Big
Unknown.” This big unknown he finds among his four friends: Chip (known as the Colonel),
Lara, Takumi and the girl he falls in love with, proves to be an impossible love, Alaska Young
(who chose this name herself as a gift from her parents on her 7th
birthday). I recommend this
book because it presents in a realistic way the adolescent experience, the whole “looking” for
Alaska making Miles understand that, most often, people live dramas deeper than they show
the world.
Quotes:
“You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape one
day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you
never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”
“‘It’s not life or death, the labyrinth.’
‘Um, okay. So what is it?’
‘Suffering,’ she said. ‘Doing the wrong and having wrong things happen to you. (…)
But there's always suffering, Pudge. Homework or malaria or having a boyfriend who
lives far away when there's a good-looking boy lying next to you. Suffering is universal.
It's the one thing Buddhists, Christians, and Muslims are all worried about.’”
“I finally decided that people believed in an afterlife because they couldn't bear not to.”

curtezanei Marie Duplessis, idealizată sub forma acestui
roman.
THE LADY OF THE CAMELLIAS
by Alexandre Dumas – the son
The Lady of the Camellias is a book of a love which is broken by social barriers.
Dumas – the son is bringing to light the story of the immeasurable love he felt for the courtesan
Marie Duplessis, idealized in this novel.

The characters do not remain, Dumas – the son and Marie Duplessis, they actually
metamorphose into Armand Duval – as lover, and Marguerite Gautier – as courtesan. The love
between the two characters is meant to break the XIXth
century social barriers of Paris, but
unfortunately it does not result in a total success. Thanks to Armand, Marguerite discovers that
love can be pure and drained of material interests. Unfortunately Marguerite’s dingy reputation
does not make her dignified for Armand Duval’s love. Even if he loves her unconditionally, his
father refuses to agree with their relationship and he will try in multiple ways to break them
up.In the end, Marguerite decides to end the relationship with Armand, being impelled by his
father, but also, by the wellbeing she wishesto Armand.
The health of the courtesan is highly affected by tuberculosis, and because of this, the
woman reveals to Armand, in the very last moments, the reason she decided to get back into
harness as a courtesan.
The white camellias are the sign Marie Duplessis was using in order to announce she
is willing to accept amorous proposals from gents, while the red camellias signify patience.
This aspect from reality was transposed by Dumas – the son in The Lady of the Camellias,
hence it results the name of the novel.
“What can be harder to bear than the senescence of the vice, especially for a woman?
A senescence voided of any sort of dignity and which inspires no appeal. The continuous
remorse, not for the life chosen, but for the wrong decisions and for the waste of money, become
the worst things ever.”
LA DAMME AUX CAMÉLIAS
Apres Alexandre Dumas- fils

personal, romanul mi s-a părut unul şocant.

1984
George Orwell
Winston Smith is an ordinary character: he hates, loves and works like any other man.
What makes him special is that he lives in an infernal world in which hate, love, or work come
from a superhuman effort of every moment. The novel "One thousand nine hundred and eighty-
four" describes the apocalyptic painting of London from the post-atomic era, the seat of a
totalitarian regime in which any logic seems to have been abolished. The executions, the
disappearances over the night have become a natural thing. The past is always rewritten to
legitimize the crimes of the present, and the propaganda’s instrument is the odious "newspeak,"
a robotic language that complements the image of a world "ordered" by the will of the Great
One who says "war is peace, freedom is slavery, Ignorance is power. "
This novel appeared in 1949 and represents the author's vision of the future in totalitarian
regimes. Fortunately, these things have not happened, but, reading the novel, you will realize
that many of these things are in one way or another in our world. Personally, the novel seemed
shocking to me. I have never read books with such an impact on me, and I think that it leaves
its mark for a long time in the mind and soul of its readers. The past is mystified, the language
is also adjusted and tuned to the new values of society, the Ministry of Peace deals with war
issues, the ministry of Truth with the change of the past, and the Ministry of Love with the
annihilation of those who do not want to conform and have the unconscious mind to think alone
and to preserve their individual memory - in other words, they commit thought murder.
Quotes:
• “If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that event, it never happened-
that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death.”
• “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.”
• “The best books are those that tell you what you know already.”

SOME KIND OF FAIRY TALE
By Graham Joyce
Tara Martin disappears at only 16 years old in the Outwoods forest, leaving her family
and her boyfriend to think of the worst. She comes back home on Christmas day after 20 years
and looks the same as before. After confessing that all these years she has lived with some
mysterious spirits from the forest, her brother, Peter, takes her to see a psychiatrist. Everything
gets weirder when magic appears in their daily lives and no one is sure of anything anymore.
Some Kind of Fairy Tale is a novel in which the subtle psychological analysis, the humor and
the intelligence go together perfectly in a fantastic atmosphere that goes from real to unreal,
magic and ordinary.
This novel therefore presents a shocking story about friendship in which the two main
characters will go from the sweet innocence of childhood to forced maturity.

POVESTEA SLUJITOAREI
de Margaret Atwood
„Povestea slujitoarei” este un roman distopic, o
operă de science-fiction sau de ficțiune speculativă.
Romanul este scris de autoarea canadiană Margaret
Atwood și publicat prima oară de către
editura McClelland and Stewart în 1985. Acesta este
un roman răscolitor, considerat de mulţi capodopera
scriitoarei canadiene.
Scrierea

THE HANDMAID`S TALE
By Margaret Atwood
„The Handmaid’s Tale’’ is a dystopian novel, a science fiction or speculative fiction
opera. The novel is written by the Canadian female author Margaret Atwood and was first
published by the McCLelland and Stewart publishing house in 1985. This is a moving novel,
considered by many to be the masterpiece of the Canadian author.
‘’The Handmaid’s Tale’’ presents the life tale of a woman during a theoretically Christian
regime, established in America. This regime goes on to deprive women of their rights and
freedom, the women being divided into categories, each one having strict duties.Women are
situated in the shadow of men and have no right to read or write, and their opinions, thoughts
and feelings are totally ignored. Offred, the protagonist of the novel is part of the handmaid’s
category. Throughout the novel, the heroine is shrouded by memories from the past, which
induce her in an anxious and melancholic state, which makes her regret the wasted time.
Through Offred, the readers have the possibility to get inside the regime, allowing them to
witness the feelings that surrounded the souls of the feminine victims. The subjectivity of the
novel offers the readers the possibility to get to know each and every gesture, sentiment of the
protagonist. Offred is an intelligent woman, but passive in the face of destiny, looking
resignedly the degrading role attributed to her. The only joys that keep the heroin alive are her
memories regarding her little girl and husband, Offred being capable of making any sacrifice
for them.
The re-education regimen of the handmaids was strict, and the so called ‘’aunts’’ that
were taking care of them, urge the women that reproduction was their only fate. Offred’s
salvation appears as the love story having Nick as a protagonist, from whom she receives the
affection that she needs in these difficult times. Not even men are deprived of anger and
persecutions. Priests and doctors were exterminated because of their will to create an ‘’ideal’’
universe. The humiliations endured by Offred are presented through the exceptional artistic
means and the ideas, the thoughts and the feelings of anger, repulsion, sadness and despair that
rule the soul of the woman.
‘’The handmaid’s tale’’ is a complex book that catches multiple ideas and principles.
From my point of view, the author has the intention of catching the attention of the readers
regarding the privileges that the modern days have to offer. In the modern-day society, freedom
is a concept strongly worshiped, and the equality between genders is a very valuable principle.
In this way, the book highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the world we live in, a
universe in which family, peace and love are blessings that bring total happiness.

ULTIMA STEA
A trăi înseamnă a-ți risca viața, inima, totul. "
The Last Star,

"The Last Star" is the third volume of the SF trilogy that has fascinated me through
intense action, but also through strong feelings that it transmitted. The last phase of the invasion

is about to be implemented: bombs will be thrown over the cities that will make them disappear
from the face of the earth, along with the evidence of our civilization. Cassie and her
companions have only three days to reunite the team and shelter in time. But Cassie and Ringer
choose to fight, to give a sense of their death, which they could not escape indefinitely.
Characters are set to the moment when they have to choose between love or fear, trust or
suspicion, hatred or sacrifice, faith or barbarism, because the only weapon that the Others do
not have is Humanity. The book's hero, of course, is Cassie. Cassie, who, even when all rescue
hopes are lost, still wants her brother Sam to learn the alphabet and remember his mother's face.
Cassie, who loves Evan in ways he can not understand, but knows they will not live the happy
ending of a fairy tale ... Cassie is the personification of humanity. Cassiopeia, the real name of
the protagonist, is a constellation, and in the end, the connection between her name and the title
of the book is so beautiful and sensitive. It is highlighted that nothing is accidental in this world.
Quotes:
• “Love is forever. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be love. The world is beautiful. If it wasn't, it
wouldn't be the world.”
• “Some things down to the smallest of things, are worth the sum of all things”
• “Pain is necessary. Pain is life. Without pain there can be no joy.”
• “You're never perfectly safe. No human being on Earth ever is or ever was. To live is to risk
your life, your heart, everything.”
LA DERRNIERE ETOILE
Apres Rick Yancey
