Six in ten people in Asia Pacific subscribed to mobile services in 2015 At the end of 2015, 62% of the population in Asia Pacific (2.5 billion individuals) subscribed to mobile services. The region’s four dominant markets – China, India, Indonesia and Japan – together accounted for more than three-quarters of the region’s total subscriber base. Growth rates in the region are set to remain above the global average, with Asia Pacific adding more than 600 million new subscribers by 2020. The focus of growth will shift to South and South-East Asia; India alone is set to add just under 250 million new subscribers by the end of the decade.

De acuerdo al décimo Pronóstico Anual Cisco VNI (Visual Networking Index), la velocidad promedio de banda ancha fija en la Argentina crecerá 3,4 veces entre 2014 y 2019: de 4.4 Mbps a 15 Mbps. Además, en el país la velocidad media de banda ancha fija incrementó un 7% desde 2013 hasta 2014: de 4.1 Mbps a 4,4 Mbps. Por su parte, la velocidad media de conexión móvil aumentará 4 veces desde 2014 hasta 2019, llegando a 1228 kbps en 2019. La velocidad promedio de conexión del smartphone fue de 2743 kbps en 2014 y su promedio crecerá 2 veces desde 2014 hasta 2019, hasta llegar a 4674 kbps en 2019. Por su parte, el tráfico móvil de la Argentina alcanzó un 78% en 2014 y crecerá 7 veces desde 2014 hasta 2019, con una tasa de crecimiento anual compuesto del 49%.

This presentation and demo show the hardware which consist of 5G UE’s, 5G radios, a fronthaul network and C-RAN with high density switches and servers, a transport network of 3 DWDM switches and a DC network of servers and high density switches. The basic software arrangement will be shown with emphasis on the structure of the orchestration and SDN controllers and the choice of virtualization components and logical networking. An eMBB slice will be brought up which will entail programming of the radios, the fronthaul, backhaul, a node B and the core. Its behavior will be noted through the test UE’s. An URRLC slice will be brought up and its nodeB and core will be demonstrated through its test UE’s showing extremely low latency. An MMTC slice will be brought up and a large number of test IOT devices will be demonstrated via the test UE’s. The eMBB slice will be augmented by programming a slice selection function that will create a ICN slice and an application (TBD) will be shown running over that ICN core (but with the eMBB slice). Spectrum will be reassigned from slice to slice and the changes noted as an optimizer recomputes the proper allocation of resources and executes it. Traffic will be increased and the changes in the backhaul over transport and core function placements will be noted. An additional demonstration will show creation of multiple 4G air interfaces using the same infrastructure network but with 4G radios and 4G UE’s using OAI software and ETTUS SDRs. A Skype session will be created between the two 4G slices. We will also try to show some of the EPC functions being moved while the UE sessions are not impacted. In this class we’ll describe the architecture and reference implementation of a Software Defined Networking (SDN) / Network Function Virtualization (NFV) based Evolved Packet Core (EPC). We describe in detail the S- and P-Gateways (S-Serving; P-Packet) control and data planes along with other components like the Mobile Management Engine (MME) and a cellular traffic emulator. We show that "SDN’izing" the mobile core enables to scale signaling, i.e. the control plane, and user data plane traffic independently – a key requirement for upcoming usage models with billions of IoT devices sharing the network with traditional User End Points. Segment routing is a network technology focused on addressing the pain points of existing IP and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks in terms of simplicity, scale, and ease of operation. It’s a foundation for application engineered routing because it prepares the networks for new business models where applications can direct network behavior. Segment routing seeks the right balance between distributed intelligence and centralized optimization and programming. It was built for the software-defined networking (SDN) era. Segment routing enables enhanced packet forwarding behavior. It enables a network to transport unicast packets through a specific forwarding path, other than the normal shortest path that a packet usually takes. This capability benefits many use cases, and you can build those specific paths based on application requirements. Segment routing uses the source routing paradigm. A node, usually a router but it can also be a switch, a trusted server, or a virtual forwarder running on a hypervisor, steers a packet through an ordered list of instructions, called segments. A segment can represent any instruction, topological or service-based. A segment can have a local semantic to a segment-routing node or global within a segment-routing network. Segment routing allows you to enforce a flow through any topological path and service chain while maintaining per-flow state only at the ingress node to the segment-routing network. To be aligned with modern IP networks, segment routing supports equal-cost multipath (ECMP) by design, and the forwarding within a segment-routing network uses all possible paths, when desired.

An explosion of new over-the-top (OTT) video services and consumer devices is placing huge demand on cable access networks. As they strive to meet insatiable market demand and stay competitive, MSOs are looking at significant access network capital expenditures (CapEx) increases over the next 5 years - and steadily rising operating expenses (OpEx) due to higher power costs and a larger network footprint. But current integrated Cisco® Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) solutions are limited to supporting only 24 to 32 channels per service group, and they are not designed to support DOCSIS® 3.1 at scale. Using these platforms, MSOs would need to significantly increase CapEx spend in order to compete with gigabit billboard rates and keep pace with growth. Alternatively, MSOs can use the Cisco cBR-8 Converged Broadband Router, a full-spectrum CCAP-compliant platform that is designed to support DOCSIS 3.1. The Cisco cBR-8 enables cable operators to offer multigigabit broadband and Internet of Everything (IoE) services, and provide a path to virtualization. It empowers MSOs to scale economically to deliver more capacity and best-in-class services with much lower total cost of ownership (TCO). This white paper examines the consumer trends affecting cable access networks and the projections for how the network and services will evolve in the coming years. It provides a long-term economic analysis of an evolved access network using the Cisco cBR-8, compared with competitive Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) platforms. And it demonstrates how MSOs will be able to meet capacity and service demands over the next several years at a 40-percent savings in hardware, space, and power costs.
