EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Challenge
ScanPlus GmbH ranks amongst the leading European providers for managed cloud
services, bringing innovation to the marketplace with new products. Using German
and Swiss-based data centers and a Europe-wide IP backbone, the company
delivers carrier-grade cloud services. Its business model is lean and agile. With
more than 140 employees ScanPlus serves over 500 customers, including upper
mid-size companies and large service provider like Deutsche Telekom.
Based on the latest Cisco technology, ScanPlus is producing a portfolio of highly
available and secure cloud services especially tailored for medium-sized enterprises.
“Here we are speaking about outsourcing,” says ScanPlus managing director and
co-founder, Jürgen Hörmann. “For this our customers’ first priority is high level
confidence in our company and production stack, which is state-of-the-art. Mid-
sized companies are prepared to enter the Enterprise Cloud. This is now starting to
happen.” Technology choice plays a key role in this success. “Cisco helps make cloud
operations simpler to manage, better protected, and easier to scale,” adds Hörmann.
Solution
The four ScanPlus data centers use Cisco® blade servers and Cisco Nexus® switches
with VMware virtualization and EMC storage. Each setup can handle 4000 servers and
8000 virtual desktop enviroments. All sites are linked by Deutsche Telekom IP/MPLS
networking. Privacy is assured by Cisco Web Security and firewalls. As a Cisco Master
Service Provider, ScanPlus makes sure its data centers are regularly updated with the
latest Cisco products and future-oriented technologies.
ScanPlus has developed its own range of business cloud offers. These include
Managed Mail Services, Managed Security Services, Managed Workplace, Managed
Private Cloud, Back-up to the Cloud, and a Self-Service Portal. These high quality
products are labelled ‘Made in Germany’ and support managed IT services for
business customers of Deutsche Telekom.
The company invests massively in training and further education of its employees,
especially in the area of Cisco technology. This includes a triennial development
program for up to thirty IT specialists, paving the way to the ScanPlus Professional
Academy in the future.

Results
Cloud powered by Cisco technology gives ScanPlus a competitive edge. “Our
people spend less time and effort on administration and can concentrate more on
creating new services,” says Hörmann. “So, we can grow all areas of the business
without any problems. Of course we run IPv6 on our platforms and in certain areas
also software-defined networking across data center borders.”
ScanPlus sees plenty of business potential in the cloud and will also rely on proven
Cisco technology in the future. Jürgen Hörmann says: “Our cloud production runs
excellently, even with enormous growth rates. In 2014 more than 200 new companies
placed their trust in us. We can certainly say that cloud is accepted by the market.”
ScanPlus expects to grow to between 300 and 400 employees by 2018.
