2. Success Criteria
Aim
• I know that an electrical device will not work if
there is a break in the circuit.
• I can describe how a simple switch is used to
open and close a circuit.
• I can explain what makes a circuit complete.
• I can follow instructions to set up circuits.
• I can identify complete and incomplete circuits.

4. Circuits
A circuit is a path of electricity.
We use circuits everyday even
though we might not be aware of it.
5. Circuits
A circuit has three basic components:
An energy source
The path of the
circuit, on which
the energy flows.
An electric device
Most circuits also include
a controller or switch.
1.Battery/cell
2.Bulb
3.Wire
6. Energy Source
An energy source for a circuit can be a
battery/cell.
A battery has two poles:
-
+ positive and negative

7. Some common electrical loads
are light bulbs or buzzers.
Electrical Load
An electrical load is a type of device
to be powered by the circuit.

8. Wire
A wire is a flexible strand of metal. Wires are used to
connect all the parts of the circuit and create the
path or loop that the electricity travels through.
Wires are often made of wire or other metal.

9. When the controller/switch
completes the circuit so
electricity can pass through, it
makes a closed circuit.
When the controller/switch stops the flow
of electricity, it opens the circuit so it is
not a closed path for electricity to flow
through.
Controller or Switch
Most electrical circuits have a controller or switch to allow or
to stop the flow of electricity.
10. Switches
There are a wide variety of switches that can be used.
slide switch
push button switch
pull switch
dimmer switch paddle switch
knife switch
key switch toggle switch
11. A switch ‘breaks’ a
complete circuit to stop
the flow of electricity when
it is off.
When the switch is on, the
circuit is complete and the
electricity are able to flow
around the circuit.

How Switches Work
12. Complete and Incomplete Circuits
Every complete circuit must
have a power supply. The
power supply could be the
mains or a battery.
For a circuit to be complete, there must be wires
connected to both the positive and negative ends
of the power supply.
Electricity can only flow around a complete
circuit that has no gaps.
13. Complete and Incomplete Circuits
An electrical circuit can be complete or incomplete.
Incomplete Circuit Complete Circuit
14. Complete and Incomplete Circuits
Incomplete Circuit This circuit is incomplete.
1.There is a gap in the circuit,
so the electrical current
cannot flow around it.
2.The wires do not connect to
the positive and negative
ends of the power supply
(the battery).
gap
15. Complete and Incomplete Circuits
Complete Circuit
This is a complete
circuit.
1.There is a power supply
(the battery).
2.There are no gaps
anywhere, so the electrical
current can flow around
the entire circuit.
3.The wires connect to both
the positive and negative
ends of the battery.
17. Guided Task: Complete or
Incomplete Circuit?
Task Instructions:
1.In the next slides, you
will see pictures of
circuits.
2.You will need to identify
if the circuit is complete
or incomplete.
3.Explain or give reasons
for your answer.
18. Complete or Incomplete?
Incomplete
Both wires are connected to the
negative end of the battery. It
creates a gap in the circuit, so the
electrical current cannot flow
around it.
19. Complete or Incomplete?
✔ There is a power supply (the battery).
✔ There are no gaps anywhere,
so the electrical current can
flow around the entire circuit.
✔ The wires connect to both
the positive and negative
ends of the battery.
Complete
20. Complete or Incomplete?
Incomplete
There is no wire connecting the
light bulb to the positive end of
the battery, so the electrical
current cannot flow around it.
21. Complete or Incomplete?
Incomplete
The black wire is not
connected to the negative
end of the battery. It
creates a gap in the circuit,
so the electrical current
cannot flow around it.
22. Independent Task 1: Make a simple circuit
You have a single cell, a bulb and 2 wires. Can you
make the bulb light up? Click the image below to create
your interactive simulation and share in class.

A cell
/battery
23. What you have learnt:
• A simple circuit is made up of components such as
wire, a bulb and a cell.
• Closing a switch completes a
circuit and allows electric current
to flow.
• Opening the switch breaks the
circuit. This means the current will
not flow.
