Relationship Building:
1. Communication is key on the water. Try to teach to each learning style so
that each boat crew is prepared.
2. Being able to listen to students concerns and work through them is an
ally.
3. Instead of putting down anxiety, sincerely question where the student is
coming from and work through those anxieties. Some ways to mitigate
anxiety include: scouting river before hand with anxious students, giving
a clear picture of what whitewater season will look like (dry land
training, small water practice), utilize a dry boat that students can get
into if they do not want to participate in horseplay.
4. Be patient- even if a student only gets on the river for the flat water
section that is a success, and celebrate even the smallest success with
students.
5. Reflection: How will you work through anxieties and what tools will you
use to deal with students that have a fear of whitewater?
