DARREN CONNELLY
Senior Engineer
Career Summary:
My education and early part of my construction career centred around the technical exercise of site
engineering, understanding the principles of construction & with the emphasis on dimensional control &
drawings relay the information both physically & verbally to the site team. Early on my experience as a
site engineer centred on concrete frame buildings, drainage works, site surveys & general bulk work
excavations.
The middle part of my career focused more on the importance & education with regard to the ‘best
practice‘ principles of construction with regard to quality, design co-ordination and the management of
both as a site engineer & through to being a section engineer. I developed my written skills in the
production of task sheets / risk assessments, method statements, management of engineers & began to
broaden my knowledge with respect to trades & works that weren’t concrete based. Various new build
projects enabled my practical knowledge of fit out & wet trade operations & therein the management of,
to increase & hence my confidence to see potential risks and ‘engineering for which I may be able to
offer practical & safe solutions.
Of more recent years my focus has been on managing engineers & myself to offer the best quality
standard of finished product in the areas of work of which I have been involved. Clear & collaborative
decision making, continued education & training in the best principles of site safety, accurate diary &
record keeping & leading by example. All engineers who have been part of my team clearly know that the
training & application of knowledge involved in temporary works, services detection, first aid, further
academic education & the various safety courses available are essential tools & to this end I push them
to pursue.
I believe myself to be a team player & I do offer valuable experience & maturity to LOR teams as well as
any involvement with designers, client or with external statutory authorities. I am pro-active & endeavour
to be informed. With regard to engineers as a rule I believe in the management idea of ‘back to basics
i.e. keep it simple and communicate with the labour force.
The learning process is a continuous one and within my profession never more so with experience being
the key & as such would wish to have a greater practical insight into contracts, programming of works &
how works are costed.
2. Key Skills:
Good level of technical knowledge within the field of site surveying
Good working knowledge of system set up with reference to engineering i.e. Survey Control,
NCR, TQ ,Temporary Works, Appointed Persons Role & Inspection test plan procedures
Good working knowledge of concrete (insitu & post tensioned) construction, with regard to mixes,
design procedures, falsework forms, records generally, reinforcement types & elements of design
Improved ability to critically analyse drawing, detail & specification information
Good working knowledge attained over the last 2-3 years with regard to envelope works
Good communicator – I try to keep the construction process simple and try to draw people in so
that the best elements of creating a team can happen
Driven individual with a can do attitude
Always willing to learn
