The ASEAN region has been a major contributor to global economic growth. The International
Monetary Fund (IMF) expects the ASEAN economy to expand by 5.1% in 2017 with the Asean-5 --
consisting of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam -- expected to dominate

sector contributing to its overall economic growth. The country’s plastics industry is a major player
in its industrial development with double-digit growth anticipated in the production and exports of
plastic products in the next few years owing to robust demand in packaging, consumer electronics
& home appliances, and construction materials.

The packaging sector accounts for about half of the total plastic consumption market in the region
and in Malaysia alone, the large consumer population of over 31 million poses huge demand for
packaging. Companies engaged in packaging manufacture for multiple categories, thus, demand
for injection molded containers, flexible and rigid packaging, as well as new printing and labelling
solutions is on the rise.
Consumer electronics and electrical appliances sales have seen dramatic rise in production output
in the region. The current shift toward smart electronics and electrical appliances, as well as the
growing preference for energy-efficient, environment-friendly gadgets and appliances provided
impetus for recent developments in breakthrough technologies and materials solutions.
The construction sector in the region has seen a number of large-scale building and construction
projects being implemented. Plastic materials account for the highest growth area in building and
construction supplies, with new materials – such as fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites,
insulation materials, advanced coatings, and grapheme – increasingly being applied in compliance
with existing regulations and standards.
