  12. 12. what researchers should know orcid.org what is an ORCID iD, and why provide it? •  iDs accompany your name to uniquely identify you •  are you Prof Paglione the astronomer at AMNH or at Maryland? •  iDs are owned by you, and used your entire career •  changed names? changed affiliations? the iD remains the same! •  iDs are used by services like Google Scholar, many universities, funders and others to unambiguously link your activities to you •  yup, this is her publication; the iDs match up. no need to ask her! PHOTO: Job Meeting www.flickr.com/photos/jobmeeting/14375164286
  13. 13. what researchers should know orcid.org what is an ORCID record, and why keep it updated? •  the record links activities to your iD, even activities that existed before your iD did •  many systems you use refer to the ORCID record rather than ask you to update them directly •  updating is easy because many publishers are partnering with Crossref to automatically update your record PHOTO: Job Meeting www.flickr.com/photos/jobmeeting/14375164286
  14. 14. what researchers should know orcid.org which journals offer automatic update if an iD is provided? ü  journal requests an authenticated ORCID iD •  iD requested before the DOI is minted •  co-author iDs might also be requested! ü  publisher includes the ORCID iD when minting a DOI •  indicate in DOI metadata that the iD is authenticated PHOTO: Job Meeting www.flickr.com/photos/jobmeeting/14375164286

  16. 16. what researchers should know orcid.org who is Crossref, and why should I give them permission? ü  not-for-profit membership organization for scholarly publishing working to make content easy to identify, cite, link and access. ü  Crossref is facilitating the update – transparent to researchers ü  Crossref only adds items to your record if you have added your iD to the publication AND you have given Crossref permission ü  permission across publishers–only grant (revocable) permission once PHOTO: Job Meeting www.flickr.com/photos/jobmeeting/14375164286

  21. 21. Crossref/Orcid auto-update Chuck Koscher Director of Technology October 29, 2015 Crossref: Orcid auto-update
  22. 22. Crossref/Orcid auto-update When publishers deposit an author’s Orcid with the arEcle Metadata, Crossref will automaEcally ask permission from that Author to post works to their Orcid record. Once permission is granted, Crossref will automaEcally post these works to the authors record. Any arEcle deposited with an author’s Orcid in the past will also get automaEcally pushed to the user’s record, aJer permission has been granted. What it is :
  23. 23. Crossref/Orcid auto-update The only acEon a publisher/member has to do is include the author’s Orcid
  24. 24. Crossref/Orcid auto-update Best pracEce: Validate the author’s Orcid when the manuscript is submiNed •  Accomplished by performing OAuth authenEcaEon with the author •  Ensures that the given Orcid is in fact correct for that author •  Can only be done for the corresponding author •  Requires technical development by the manuscript submiNal system •  Does not ask for any permissions, just validates they are who they say Helps prevent sending permission requests to the wrong person
  25. 25. Crossref/Orcid auto-update ValidaEon means having the author login to Orcid which confirms they have access to that Orcid account
  26. 26. Crossref/Orcid auto-update Points to consider: Permissions given by the author are not specific to a given publisher. Thus, if an author gives permission for an arEcle published with one publisher, then any arEcle from any publisher for that author will automaEcally be pushed to the author’s record Works already claimed by the author, or inserted by some other organizaEon will also be pushed by Crossref auto-update
  27. 27. Crossref/Orcid auto-update Points to consider: Prior to auto-update being available Crossref received a large number of deposits that contained Orcids for authors. •  191,665 unique authors •  532,382 arEcle/author pairs •  266,929 unique arEcles
  28. 28. Crossref/Orcid auto-update Points to consider: At some point Crossref will process this back log However, anything in the backlog will get processed now if another arEcle with a matching Orcid is freshly deposited (or updated).
  29. 29. Crossref/Orcid auto-update Points to consider: Authors will receive noEces to their inbox, and subsequently emails, asking for permission for Crossref to post works to their profiles. If the author ignores the request, or deletes it without responding, we will send another request in 2 months Once we have sent a permission request to an author, we will not send another request for any subsequent deposits with that Orcid If the author denies Crossref permission, we will send another request in 6 months.
  30. 30. Crossref/Orcid auto-update As of October 28th •  32,164 claims have been deposited •  13,771 unique authors •  22,244 unique arEcles •  2,418 permissions have been granted •  ? works have been pushed (we’re not counEng this yet) •  only 1 permission denial •  but, a few authors are ‘playing’ around, give permission then revoke it
