- We mentioned ‘complete’ as an important part of good metadata - we’ve recently released our participation reports.. These are a dashboard that displays how much metadata each member has registered with us Participation Reports give Crossref members, sponsors, metadata users and the wider scholarly community a clear, visual snapshot of the metadata that Crossref has. They let you see the key metadata elements that our members are registering that make their content richer and easier to find. The main goal of Participation reports is to evaluate and educate. The reports allow users to see where the gaps in metadata are, and what our members could improve upon. Member are better able to understand best practice through seeing what others are doing.

- Why? Crossref members: Not always aware of what metadata they’re sending to Crossref Can see what’s missing and can fix the gaps Can track progress of their metadata in an easy and user-friendly way
- Registering your content isn’t just about getting a persistent identifier for your work. It is about where your metadata goes after you register it with Crossref, and how many other organizations then use that metadata to find the content you publish.
- First up, our own developers have used the Crossref metadata to build two search tools to help look up Crossref records for use in compiling reference lists and matching content to DOIs. These free tools allow you to enter any piece of information about a content item (title, author, DOI, publication name, ORCID iD, ISSN and more) and we’ll show you what we have in our database. In the funder search interface, you can enter the name of the funder and we’ll bring back all the publications we can see who have that funder associated with them in the Crossref metadata. This is another reason why it’s important to provide this information - if you’re adding funder details to your Crossref deposits, your content will be appearing in these search results. *update screenshots at https://search.crossref.org and https://search.crossref/funders) to get most up to date figures*
- Here’s an example of a search on a funder name via Crossref funder search. This is the records that we can see associated with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey: 5,568 results! This is why it’s important to add this piece of metadata, if not then your articles won’t appear in these search results.
- On average we see over 600 million metadata queries per month across all interfaces, and this is increasing each year. This represents individuals and organizations who are trying to discover and deliver content and provide services for the research community. Lots of people!
- it’s important that our metadata be accurate - accurate: the information needs to be the right information, misspelled author names or bad license URLs or bad DOI URLs do horrible things to our ecosystem. Authors - if you notice errors in the metadata of your article, then please do content the publisher and let them know they need to update their records with us, we cannot do that directly for you! complete: we need to collect all contributors for a work, their ORCID iDs as well as what shape their contributions took and what org. they are affiliated with. current: the metadata needs to be up to date, lots of metadata stands still but not all of it. URLs change (that’s why we are here), licenses evolve, newer initiatives like ORCID iDs can be added to an existing metadata set. ‘complete and ‘current’ metadata are things we need to focus on at Crossref as well, we want to make it easy for you to update your metadata, keep track of updates, and we need to collect or refine new metadata as we evolve.

- Here is an example of a member’s report - the Association for the Development of Early Childhood Education in Turkey. They have not yet registered too many content items just yet, but they have a fairly good record with 100% of text mining, license URLs and Sim Check URLs, 67% of abstracts and 38% of their records have ORCID IDs. By viewing their report, the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of Ukraine can easily identify the metadata gaps in their record.
- Here is another example from Springer Nature who also provide very comprehensive metadata to Crossref.
- A breakdown of the total number of registered items will be shown along the top; you can filter the results by content type, choosing from the dropdown list which content type for which you wish to see the statistics.
- this means you can look within journals for a specific title.
- On the right side of the report you can also choose between viewing the statistics for the current content items (published within the last 2 years, which is the default setting), backfile (content older than 2 years), or by all time. when adding a new metadata field, many members start with current content and work their way back as they are able. Not all fields will be populated for all titles - Content published in 1960 isn’t going to have an ORCID, for example, some types of publications may not have abstracts, or be funded, back issue content won’t have much funding detail the further back you go.
- Sharing your metadata has many benefits for your content. It is important to remember that assigning DOIs and registering your metadata does not change the access model of your content. Only the metadata is shared, not the full text.
