Who am I
Combating stereotypes on college campus
D’Asia Patterson
Questions
What is some stereotypes you faced based on your race, age,
gender, socioeconomic status?
Write down what defines you (something that no one would
know just by looking at you)?
What are some stereotypes you had on your own?
Think back when you first meet your roommate.
Have you ever been a victim of a
stereotype?
How did that make you feel?
What does she look like, who
do you think she is?
Did typical
stereotypes play a
role in the way you
viewed these people?
What Is stereotype?
Stereotypes are widely held beliefs that people have certain
characteristics because of their membership in a particular
group.
Why do we
hold
stereotyped
views?
Is a way people efficiently process information to
classify objects according to their distinctive
features which leads to people categorizing people
based on nationality, race, ethnicity, gender, age,
religion, sexual orientation, and so forth.
Self fulfilling prophecy belief that because someone
belongs in a certain group they are suppose to act a
certain way.
Conformity
Another result is when there is a heighten visibility of
outgroup member, when their are only a few of
them, for example minorities at a PWI
(predominantly white institution)
People they feel are similar to them they categorize as
their ingroup(Us) and those different outgroups (them).
Prejudice
Prejudice- is a negative attitudes toward member of a group;
discrimination is involves, behaving differently, usually unfairly, towards
the member of a group
Defense Mechanism
Defensive attribution is a tendency to blame victims for their misfortune,
so that one feel less likely to be victimized in a similar way. (people get
what they deserve)
Example : Homeless people
When people are blamed for their setbacks they are usually giving the
traits of being lazy, foolish, incompetent, and so forth
Problems
with
stereotypes
This prevent dialogue between people with different
backgrounds on college campus.
Claude steele suggest that the availability and
awareness of derogatory stereotypes connected to
various stigmatized groups leads to stereotype
vulnerability; which can undermine group members
performance on a certain task, such as standardized
test.’
Attacking stereotypes
If people put forth effort to respond in a
friendly and open manner to individuals
who are different from them on some
important dimension, maybe perhaps the
positive behaviors will lead to a reduction
in automatic biases when reacting to
others.
Imagine yourself talking to someone who you
would consider to be in the “outgroup”
what would you say? What would you
learn?
Switch it up sit with students you would not
normally sit with.
College campus
Have dorm mixers promote students to talk to
someone who they feel may be very
different from them, maybe change the
way roommates are chosen
- Shook and Fazio conduct an experiment
that showed college students rooming with
students with different ethnicity/race have
shown to be less prejudice than those who
room with the same race.
● Promote students to go to offices provided
on campus that promote diversity amongst
their peers for example if your college
campus have LGBTQ center or Women's
center or an Intercultural center.
