Design disciplines in the univer sities of ag riculture
and forestr y
Abstr act:
The combination of science and art is a creative direction, and also a necessary for the future development in the
Art and Design disciplines. Mr. Qian Xuesen, a famous physicist who agreed to understand art on the views of
science, said that, “‘Ugly machine’ has been disliked since the middle of this century, and science and art began to
combine to each other. As educators, we should realize the tasks and responsibilities of the Art and Design
disciplines.” The Art and Design disciplines in the universities of agriculture and forestry seemingly have no
significant advantages in comparison with the ones in traditional arts universities. However, as a product of times,
they begin to show out more and more advantages and characteristics in cross-discipline when considering the
present situation of social development. An excellent example is the subject of Environmental Landscape Design,
which contains the courses such as garden design, plant cultivation, floriculture, soil and climate science and civil
engineering as well. Another example is the subject of Interior Design, which combines a lot of technology and art
courses, such as material technology, furniture design, engineering drawing, civil engineering, forestry industry,
and process experiments. The subject of Industrial Design also represents the advantages of combination of science
and art, which is constituted by many characteristic courses like material technology, electromechanics, furniture
design, human engineering, environmental arts and so on. Therefore, following the trends of “unlimited”
development of art and design, the relative disciplines in the universities of agriculture and forestry need to
sustainably develop by exploiting all the advantages, and taking the characteristics of innovation. In this paper, we
discuss how to build up the Art and Design courses system by taking advantages of Art and Design disciplines in
universities of agriculture and forestry. And the issues such as the self-improvement of teaching management
system, the development of quality of teachers, and the construction of teacher team are also discussed.
