1. Individual Practice – Daniel Cortes
Project: The dilemma of the neighborhood board
Objective: Identify emotions and manage an action plan
This is your first year as a leader of your neighborhood; lately, you have thought about not continuing with
this job because some of the residents have been calling you constantly to complain about the cleanliness
of the common areas, the lack of security, and the poor lightning in the neighborhood.
You have been very patient, and you are always willing to listen to you community, and as such you have
even received calls at dawn from complaining neighbors. As much as you have tried to help and pay
attention to them in a cordial way, you question whether continuing with this commitment is a worthwhile
since you feel worn down.
1. Action plan > Diagnosis of the situation and the emotions it creates.
Unfortunately, the things haven’t been going well even before I started leading the
neighborhood, it’s hard to receive everyone’s complaints with no resolution or start an
action plan. A very tough situation that we need to resolve by starting a better way of
communicating the situations and meet with the neighbors to make sure we prioritize
the problems and start resolving them one by one.
2. Action plan > Action plan that helps you make decisions related to this situation.
The best way to start making decisions here is to list all the issues and prioritize them.
Once I know what’s concerning the neighborhood the most, I’ll start fixing the issues.
To do this, I also need to send a communication to the neighbors letting them know
what times I will receive their messages and the way I will get them, which should be
in writing and specifying why they feel that the problem is occurring and asking them
for possible solutions.
3. Why did this happen? (Consider all possible factors, including the people and the
situation)
This is due to a bad prior management and prioritization. The previous leader should
have taken all these problems into account and should also have an action plan for
every single situation. Also, as a neighborhood, we should be all on the same page and
keep pushing for better management when the things start to look bad.
4. What class concepts are relevant to this situation? (Mention at least one concept
from class and how they can be used to interpret the situation.)
Positivity is the first one, if we think positively, we’ll be able to open our minds and be
able to find solutions. We can’t stay on the bad and keep receiving bad feedback from
the neighbors without providing a resolution.
2. On the other hand, resilience. For the leader, the situation the neighborhood is going
through is hard, but he needs to stand up and keep going, look for option and make
sure he fixes everything, so things go back to normal.
5. What did you learn from this? (Broader lessons that might apply to other situations
or problems.)
It helps me better understand how to handle tough situations. We need to stop and
think positively, and make sure we always have the way to go over anything that could
arise.
If I write things down and prioritize thinking everything can be resolved, I’ll be able to
go over it and resolve. Everything can be resolved if we think positively, we just need
to open our minds and keep going.
