AUSTRIA JOINS BARREL-AGED BEER CRAZE: STEIGL FERDINAND
BEER IMPORTED BY LOUIS GLUNZ BEER, INC.
The rum/cognac barrel-aged imperial altbier brewed contains now available in select
Midwestern and Southern states
(LINCOLNWOOD, IL; February 2015)—An exhilarating taste experience from Austrian
brewer Stiegl has made its way to the United States for the first time, via Chicago. Glunz
Imports, a division of Louis Glunz Beer, Inc., Chicagoland’s oldest family-run beer
distributor and importer of select international brews, introduces the 2014 edition of
Stiegl Ferdinand. This beer receives its full body with a subtle mousseux and notes of
toffee, coconut, vanilla, caramel, and a hint of honey from a six-week tank maturation
followed by a four-month maturation in Caribbean rum barrels from Martinique,
originally used to age cognac. Only 330 cases of this rare beer are available stateside.
“Stiegl, like most Austrian breweries, follows the Reinheitsgebot, which only allows beer
to contain water, malted grain, hops, and yeast—and barrel-aging is a relatively new
process for them that brings extra layers of flavor while respecting the purity law,”
explains Anthony Norkus, craft and specialty import brand manager for Louis Glunz

Beer, Inc. “For Ferdinand, the aging process in Caribbean rum barrels that previously
housed cognac means this beer not only has a richness, but also some sweetness and
nuttiness that’s inherently tropical.”
The fourth beer in Stiegl’s special edition Vintage series presents a black and white
classical label with emblems across a dark-toned Champagne-style bottle topped with a
crown cork. At 10% ABV, Ferdinand pairs well with rich ripened cheeses, tiramisu, and
chocolate, as well as with cigars.
With a limited quantity, Louis Glunz Beer, Inc. brings the exclusive Stiegl Ferdinand in
750mL bottles to Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Tennessee,
Kentucky, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas.
Outstanding Beer Playground
Glunz applauds Steigl’s passion for education and experience, which shines through in
the brewery’s tasting room and impressive sampling, maturation, and storage cellar in
Salzburg, Austria, which opened in 2013. Under perfect conditions, up to 8,000 bottles
and 16 barrels lay in storage, ready for use. Stiegl’s master brewers use this facility to
mature very special beers in Barrique oak barrels, including Bourbon Barrel Bock.
Alongside beers brewed by Stiegl, such as the Double India Pale Ale, Triple Blond, and
Imperial Stout in Champagne bottles, the sampling cellar is also home to several beer
specialties from other countries.
