Social impact of technology media presentation
1. We may be physically isolated, but we
will never be socially isolated fully
Danny Bello 100141898
David Chabot 100144210
2. noun Sociology .
a state or process in which persons, groups, or
cultures lose or do not have communication or
cooperation with one another, often resulting
in open conflict
(Dictionary.com,2012)
3. For the past years leading into the new
millennium, there has been quite a technology
boom. Cell phones and television have grown at
such a fast pace, that its hard to keep with the new
products that are coming out. However through all
these advancements in technology, we begin to see
a flaw, a trend that has been both negative and
beneficial in our society. The topic we will be
covering today is social isolation and Neurosis and
the effects it has been creating in society today, and
how we might not be as socially isolated as we
thought.
4. In society today, we are more and more
dependent on using our mobile phones for
communication. Smart phones today are able
to do anything from, sending e-mails, texting
and searching the web, all from one convenient
hand held device. Phone companies are now
making it easier to text an individual rather
than just calling them.
5. “Now we are more accustomed to depend on our
hand held device to communicate to our
friends, family, relatives and acquaintances rather
than encountering them physically. Words and use
of words are everything, there's hardly any need to
relate physical expression or body language and
silence in between words are just a sign of labor of
expression rather than any indication toward a
secondary meaning of the verbal or written
words.”
("How mobile technology," 2012)
6. It’s not a bad thing to send text messages or use
your phone, because it does it make life more
convenient, some individuals find their phones to
be the most useful part of their day, like business
owners or executives.
This leads us into the addiction of texting where
social isolation takes place. We all have our
moments while texting, where we are not aware of
our surroundings and end up in a pickle, just like
this video.

7. Some of us more than others become too
caught up in the moment and are not aware of
their physical surrounding, as shown in the
video.
Look around next time you’re in class or at the
mall, and notice how many people are walking
around glued to their cell phones rather than
paying attention to where or what they’re
doing.
8. This may often lead to Neurosis:
Neurosis
a mental and emotional disorder that affects
only part of the personality, is accompanied by
a less distorted perception of reality than in a
psychosis, does not result in disturbance of the
use of language, and is accompanied by
various physical, physiological, and mental
disturbances (as visceral symptoms, anxieties,
or phobias)
(merriam-webster,2012)
9. An addiction, which we can see more and more
through social Medias like facebook. On
average, a user spends 8 hours a DAY on
Facebook.
“Google may still be the world’s most visited
website with users spending nearly 2 hours on
the site in a given month. But the average U.S.
Internet user spends nearly 4 times the amount
of those hours on Facebook, according to a new
study.”
(Parr, 2011)
10. This new trend has been sweeping countries like a
disease, with new users joining every day. Maing
Facebook accessible by phone only excels the
process of social isolation or Neurosis.
Although mobile phones have taken a role in
social isolation, users are not fully isolated yet.
With apple releasing their new face time
application, individuals are able to talk face to face
on their phones. This however isn’t as good as
physically talking to someone, it is better than just
plain letters from a text message.
11. Video games, every teenagers passion, from just
playing games on an iphone or ipad, to consol
gaming to computer gaming we once again see
this trend of social isolation and Neurosis.
Video games have become more and more
detailed, with some games even putting you in the
action like the Nintendo wii and Xbox Kinect. It is
because of these detailed games that individuals
are locking themselves in their bedrooms and
playing games all night and day.
12. “Over-dependence on video games could foster
social isolation, as they are often played alone.”
Since the majority of video games played today are
played alone, individuals are more likely to
develop or become socially isolated. Already
isolated, these individuals will play more and
more until they develop the addiction, this is when
Neurosis develops, or WORSE.....FIRST PERSON
SHOOTER DISEASE!!

13. As many of you may know, there have been
many incidents of teenagers dying because
they’ve played too many hours sitting
down, and those children that went on a killing
spree because they saw it in a game. These are
serious cases that maybe have been
psychological problem, but that’s information
for a whole new presentation!
14. Although many individuals have become addicted
to video games, are they really socially isolated?
Anyone who has taken part in an online game
might debate it. Many games today are played
online, and as many things in life the objective is to
win. This is usually done by teaming up with
members and forming a group. These groups or
teams usually take a lot of communication,
because you are against other humans on the other
side. However sometimes these video games can
give individuals the kind of communication skills
that they wouldn’t have learned just by talking to
friends at school. Some video games can teach
teamwork or even simulate certain environments.
15. Take the U.S military for example:
Today's U.S. military recruits enjoy an arsenal
of simulators and video games that sharpen
their fighting skills and may even protect them
from the mental stresses of combat.
(Hsu, 2010)
16. Video games would have to be considered one
of the major ways to become socially isolated
because of the addiction factor that game
designers try and create. Although neurosis
and social isolation is a serious matter, the fact
is that not everyone who plays video games
will become socially isolated or become
addicted. Some may even learn or develop
skills they couldn’t have learned otherwise.
17. Another major player in the trending social
isolation and Neurosis problem is the internet.
The majority of individuals spend most of their
time in the day on the internet. A toll taken
from the USA showed how great the usage
hours are monthly. Although the statistics were
taken in 2010, we can only imagine how much
that number has gone up due to emerging
countries having access to the internet.
(Engagement, 2011)
18. Compared to those who do not use the Internet
frequently, those who do—31 percent of the
U.S. population, according to the study—spend
a whopping 70 minutes less daily interacting
with family, 25 minutes less sleeping and 30
minutes less watching television.
(Dixon, 2005)
19. With the amount of time the internet has taken
from our social life we should all be considered
socially isolated. With such large amount of
time being set aside for surfing the web, its not
surprising that some individuals just lose
themselves with all the endless data that there
is to be found on the internet.
Through Google almost any kind of
information can be found, which makes it an
endless information gallery.
20. We may be spending a lot of time in front of
the computer screen, however are we fully
isolated from any social communication?
21. Many individuals today like to join forums
and communicate with others all the time.
There seems to be a forum for just about
anything today, for people who enjoy
instruments, to book clubs. There are even
dating sites that individuals join. So we may be
on the internet for hours and hours on
end, however we not fuly socialy isolated.
22. We have seen some of the many ways that
individuals in society can become socially isolated
or develop Neurosis. However we have also need
a different view, of technology, and how it isn’t so
evil. Although social isolation is a very serious
matter and should be worked on, we are never full
isolated socially. Technology may reduce our time
from the outside world and physically from
meeting others or communicating face to face.
However it will never fully take away the social
experience, some individuals might even become
more social online than what they are in reality.
