The Aim of the "Awesome Africa Braai and Potjie Festival"
is to highlight the plight of

and to raise funds for the chosen Charities whilst

How did this Event Come About.

My sister was abducted and held against her will over the 2008 Christmas period.

She was locked away, abused, tormented and subjected to a number of other unspeakable actions.

Her two daughters were unfortunate to witness a few of these incidents and are still suffering from it.

A Facebook appeal to any one if they knew of her whereabouts, was launched.

Police where notified and a number of organisations where contacted.

I managed to trace the whereabouts of her alleged abductor after 10 days of searching.

Progress was careful and slow from then with all the authorities involved, so that we did not endanger her safety any further.

Shortly after this we had her returned safely to her home.

Charges were lodge with the Police in a number of cities and towns and Restraining orders and restrictions were also Served.

However, her safety could still not be guaranteed from her alleged abductor.

I then launched a search for organisations and safe houses where my sister could be safe.

I learnt that there are not many organisations or safe houses available for women who have been abused.

The assistance and facilities was also very limited.

Where they could be found, they were all struggling to find funds.

I was amazed and shocked to see how big a problem abuse against women was and how little attention or funding it receives.

There are many women out there who are not so lucky. Some don't get found in time. Some get stuck in a cycle of abuse and can't get out. Most of them don't know
where to turn to or where to find help or advice. Most of them never get help. The damage is still however there, sometimes visible, but mostly hidden. The abuse
destroys so many lives directly and indirectly.

Abuse
                         Facts and figures - UK
One case of domestic abuse occurs every 20 seconds in the UK; it is the 2nd most
common violent crime in Great Britain.

2 women every week and 30 men per year are killed in England and Wales by current or
former partners; domestic abuse has more repeat victims than any other crime.

One in 4 women and one in 6 men will experience some form of domestic abuse-
physical, psychological, emotional, sexual or financial- in their lifetime.

Every year 750,000 children witness family abuse and in half these cases they are
    physically harmed

25% of 13-17 year olds who are dating report experiencing physical violence or verbal,
emotional or sexual abuse in their relationships.

Ubuntu Education Fund
Who We Are In 1999, Jacob Lief and Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula founded Ubuntu Education Fund, a nonprofit organisation
dedicated to working with the people of the Eastern Cape Province to develop quality education and healthy communities in the New
South Africa. Banks was a teacher living and working in the Port Elizabeth Townships and Jacob was an American university
student. A bond between two friends has become a family of over 75 employees and a life-force for an entire community. Today,
Ubuntu is reaching over 40,000 children, youth, and adults with life-saving health services and vital educational resources.

What We Believe Ubuntu Education Fund is founded on the philosophy of ubuntu, a universal bond of sharing that connects all
of humanity—I am because you are. We have used this philosophy to create the Ubuntu Model—a community-based strategy for
program development. The Ubuntu Model allows us to address social challenges with an innovative and systematic approach
ensuring operations are efficient, fiscally accountable, and on the cutting edge of social entrepreneurship.

The Ubuntu Model makes us aware that engineering true change is a process. In South Africa, this means building social and
institutional sustainability. Ubuntu seeks community involvement at all stages of program development. This strategy allows for the
creation of sustainable institutions that provide a base of skills and resources to change how a community sees itself and approaches
                                        its future.

What We Do Ubuntu Education Fund ensures that the community has access to:

          ·       Education and employment opportunities

          ·       A range of health services, particularly HIV testing and treatment

          ·       HIV prevention education and tools

          ·       Psychosocial counseling and support

          ·       Safe spaces, particularly for orphans and vulnerable children

          ·       Regular, nutritious meals at partner schools and clinics

  • 3. Most of them don't know where to turn to or where to find help or advice. Most of them never get help. The damage is still however there, sometimes visible, but mostly hidden. The abuse destroys so many lives directly and indirectly. Thursday, 28 July 2011

Ubuntu Education Fund Who We Are In 1999, Jacob Lief and Malizole “Banks” Gwaxula founded Ubuntu Education Fund, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to working with the people of the Eastern Cape Province to develop quality education and healthy communities in the New South Africa. Banks was a teacher living and working in the Port Elizabeth Townships and Jacob was an American university student. The Ubuntu Model allows us to address social challenges with an innovative and systematic approach ensuring operations are efficient, fiscally accountable, and on the cutting edge of social entrepreneurship. The Ubuntu Model makes us aware that engineering true change is a process. In South Africa, this means building social and institutional sustainability. Ubuntu seeks community involvement at all stages of program development. This strategy allows for the creation of sustainable institutions that provide a base of skills and resources to change how a community sees itself and approaches its future.
